De Montille Tasting with Etienne de Montille (Burgundy Wine Company): Color is a luminous magenta with pink bubblegum hues. Big berry scents dominate the nose which is also a bit dusty. I don't like the way it tastes: the fruit is tart and medicinal -- bringing back memories of that disgusting pink amoxyl children's syrup -- and the tannins are extreme, rough in the mouth and utterly drying out the finish. Etienne de Montille condeded these are "the toughest tannins we've ever had in [an A.O.C.] Bourgogne."

Gorgeous stuff. Barely any colour at all, but incredible mountain-stream and tarragon. Nice body, balanced acids and a pure feeling on the palate. Slight creaminess. Lime and wet stone. Long finish. Very young, fresh and primary. Long upside to this wine.

Sensory Tasting with Peter Wasserman (Burgundy Wine Company): Tasted blind: Hue similar to the last but darker. Leathery, cinnamon nose, light and lacey on the palate with a sticky finish. My guess was Volnay [and if there's some Volnay in here I'll be quite impressed with myself].

Complex expressive aromas. The mouth is a lot more elegant than you would expect from such aromas. Coffee, leek and chocolate. Very slick balance with integrated tannins that do need time to soften. Feels a lot younger than you would expect from a 15 year old wine. Needs time and actually should improve. Big finish. Tasty with a reasonable level of personality. Good stuff!

Delightfully Volnay. Light in colour, clear and ruby-like. Soft nose with sous-bois and hay. Beautiful precision and intensity with cherry / cherry-stems, mineral and velvet notes. Rustic edges and a clean finish with crisp fruit acids and light berry core. Really delicious. Did not do so well with the cheeses which were too light and fresh - a bad choice on my part.

Opened this after viewing Mondovino. Fascinating contrast with the previous night's Arnaud Ente Volnay Les Santenot du Milieu 1999 where despite the massive style (and vintage) differences, what is 'Volnay' shines through in each.

Burg Night in Tokyo (Cote d'Or): Light old burg red well along the path toward brown, but without any cracking at the edges. Nothing in appearance to suggest anything but very full maturity. Nose has a huge dose of VA, not quite varnishy but enough to obscure almost any other notes. The VA never entirely blows off, but after ten or fifteen minutes subsides enough to let other notes come out. Then, for about thirty minutes, the wine is very, very pretty but has lost the complexity and brightness on the nose that it must once have had. Nowhere to be found are the sweet tea and mushroom one I often finds on the nose of such wines. The dominant notes of the nose are a little sweet cherry, some plum tart, and just a little sous bois. On the palate, during the wine’s short window of grace, is a hint of tannin turned to faded tea, a tiny bit of brandy in which cherries have been macerated, and occasional surprising stabs of brighter cherry. And then the wine topples gently but suddenly over the hill, leaving camphor and the melancholy sweet smell of Miss Havisham’s house. Despite all that, I really enjoy drinking faded beauties like this. I also think this may not have been the best bottle and others may have held together better. In any case, drink up.

$89.99 full retail. Lighter / more youthful color than I expected. Fairly tight on the nose. The palate shows quite a bit of polish and a gorgeous texture. Good balance. Light vanilla and a touch of spice; clean and bright, with flavors building right through the finish. This is clearly top level stuff on the palate - really impressive, though, admittedly, expensive. Will continue to evolve / live for years in the cellar. Can't wait to try the '99 and '02 !

Dinner with Herschel and Anne (L'Osier): I wasn't ready to hear any recommendations from the sommelier on the red, as there was a '93 Montille Pommard Pezerolles on the list at a pretty reasonable price. Both Montille's wines and the 1993 vintage in Burgundy are controversial, but I happen to love both. Besides, I couldn't imagine a better match for my pigeon! For once, I was right. This wine had matured the way we always hope burgundy will. The tannins had receded way to the background, the acid was bright and strong, but very much in balance, and the secondary aromas of earth, mineral, and flower essence were coming on strong. Montille wines can be almost painfully austere when young, but the signature Montille acid provided a great structure to hold up the Pommard fleshiness. This one is drinking great right now, but should have 3-5 years development left (and a nice little holding period after that). I think the general consensus on this vintage is just going to get better and better as the wines mature. I really wish I had some of this in the cellar and will buy some if I can find it with certain good storage. Bright, clear, fleshy, getting more and more complex and oh so detailed with nice persistent finish. There are so many good winemakers in this Pommard/Volnay part of the world -- Montille, d'Angerville, Lafarge, Pousse d'Or -- and they often represent such good value on restaurant lists.

Nose was minty and rustic with muted fruit behind. Not overly fruity at all with mid-weight palate. Some tannin but not mouth-puckering. Really opened up in just 15 minutes. Pretty good but not overly complex or precise.

2002 Red Burgundy - Sunday of The Masters (Richmond, Virginia): Tasted next to the Pommard Pezerolles '02 in a line up of '02 red Burgs... Surprisingly, the Pezerolles was much more open / expressive right now (see TN). The Taillepieds was tighter on the nose and showed more tannin / acid than the Pommard. Med bodied; red fruit. This one really needs to settle in, and I am optimistic about its potential...

In fact, single blind, I though this was the '02 de Montille Volnay Taillepieds for sure... Bright red fruit; subtle spices. Lush. More open than the Volnay Taillepieds, but still quite primary and begging for some time in the bottle...

One of my wine revelations of 2005 so far - I had heard that Etienne de Montille has been aiming for a more accessible style without compromising aging ability, but this was even better than I expected. This confirmed my impression that the better Pommards are truly stunning in 2002, with great (and typical) meatiness and earthiness but greater elegance and refinement than usual. The rich, smoky black fruit here is not only delicious but downright seductive, but there is no doubting the deep, serious nature at the core of this wine either.

Fantastic stuff here - ultimately this will probably be even better than the Pézerolles, but that wine is just so open and seductive right now (can I really be talking about de Montille?). Nevertheless, over the course of two days this showed everything from the same black, smoky richness that I found in the Pez to the supremely elegant, minerally character at the core of this wine. I'll rate this a shade below the Pez for the moment as the latter wine is much more expressive right now, but if anything the ultimate potential is greater here.

Drunk with dinner at a restaurant in Beaune. No formal note, but this leaned more towards the red fruit side of the equation and was a bit tight. I'm sure this wine will age well over the med. term and offer a lot more pleasure once it softens a bit, cracks open a little, and more secondary notes emerge... Nonetheless, it went quite well with my duck dish.

Beautiful light color. Restrained nose with light elements of light cherry fruit and some clay. A solid acidic backbone packed with good fruit. Restrained, but also rough around the edges. That tension between rusticity and elegance defines Volnay for me. Opened up beautifully in gaining more fruit and slight floral notes, but never losing the acidic backbone. A handsome wine. Nice finish with more packed fruit and some lingering tannins. Absolutely delicious with roast chicken dusted w/ fleur de sel and slightly sharp paprika. I think it will continue to improve for a while as well.

Tasted at Lark with Steve and Dinah.

Very closed on the nose when first opened. Dark, reticient fruit. Opened a bit after an hour, showing good red-purple fruit that was slightly monolithic. Acid is definitely there, but not spiky or unbalanced. Color is still purplish. Left a bit under half the bottle for the next night. 24 hours later the fruit had opened a bit into the crushed berry thing on both the nose and the palate. Still pretty monolithic though. Don't both touching one of these for at LEAST 5 more years, more likely ten.

Lovely ruby colour. (Magnum) Massive attack of intense fruit on the palate. Earthy note, combined with sour cherries. (Indicative of incipient oxidation?) Not much structure left, but still delicious. dg

Opened in support of the best 90s vintage tasting and de Montille thread.
Colour - Bright Light Cherry Red
Aroma - Spicy, black fruit hints of earth and feral.
Flavour - Raspberries, mineral, underbrush and savoury. Lovely mouth feel and weight, quite complex, very focussed (not what I expected from vintage but typical of Motille), fine tannins, persistent length and wonderful clean finish.
Overall, super wine that is all class, drinking incredibly well yet still a baby. Worth searching out more 1999 de Motille. 91+

Having read the Montille thread I thought I might revisit one of the wines that really impressed early on and inspired my conversion from pagan to burgundy. I must have first had this wine on release but opening it today I was thinking how little it has changed - it has been cellared at 10%C.

The colour is light red/stsrt of browning.
The aroma of fresh raspberries.
On the palate the wine is bright with red fruits, hint of mineral, touch of raw meat and savoury. An appealing hint of bitterness that evolves to a long lingering sweet mid-palate and mouth puckering dry finish. I have enjoyed drinking this since release and am surprised at how little it has evolved since I last tasted it a couple of years ago. It is a beautiful wine with enough stuffing to last 10 more years.
