NV Pierre Gerbais Champagne (perpetual 2011 - 2018) La Loge

Bookclub (served blind)--My Turn (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): Disgorged October 2022, 100% old vine Pinot Blanc (80 years old), with 3 gms of dosage. This wine seemed well-received at the table, and I concur. This bottle was as good as the one I had a few weeks ago. Mint, green apple, mineral and melon, plus a touch of pungent spice too, enough to just shade the wine. The density is just right and the wine is in good balance, with a flavor profile that is delicious.

Disgorged April 2022. 100% Pinot Blanc from 80 year old vines organically grown on Kimmeridgian in Celles-sur-Ource, quite near Bouchard. Created from a perpetual back to 2011, using 2018 base. No wood here, all done in tank. 3 grams dosage. Open an hour. Delicious stuff. Yellow apple, stone fruit, mango drizzled with lime and mineral. The fruit has a gentle honeyed quality and it's balanced extremely well. Going back for more of this, what a great wine.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Ramon (Maison Cafe in Dana Point, CA): Served blind. Disgorged February 2019, from old vine Pinot Blanc. 62 grams of dosage, which as bizarrely high as this may sound, the wine does not exhibit sweetness that would normally turn me off as I dislike sweet wines. Viet remarked that the wine showed a 'hay' quality, with my sense that was a green banana aroma. The flavor of this is squarely in a lime extract/concentrate that is not quite syrupy but the density is there. Fascinating to drink the wine, especially blind without the dosage # and just experience it without that bias. And also, a reminder to me that I have lost track of Aurelien Gerbais' wines and it is time to hunt down some of the range (which now have the new front labels) and see how the wines are showing.

This was the 2020 disgorgement (I assume the only one for this small prod cuvee?), 100% Pinot Blanc and no dose. I tasted this a few times over the course of the time we had it open and it's interesting. I really dug the aromatics, very floral and lots going on, and even an image of cotton candy hit my thoughts, along with something lactic, what I think I called yogurt. Seemed fresh but a little rich to me if that makes sense. I think I had told my buddy who was also drinking it that I probably couldn't drink too much of it given the uniqueness and flavors but it was unique to try.

Second of two. Disgorged July 2018, 100% Pinot Blanc with no dosage, farmed bio. Opened yesterday, and in candor, I didn't care for it because it was out of balance, led by a bitterness that I didn't enjoy. Retasting today, the balance is better. Lots of citrus here, with some melon and apple, yet the fruit is lean and the wine is crisp. My advice is to let this breathe before judging it and also keep in mind this is a leaner, edgy in tone.

Bookclub--Wines Tasted Blind: Poured blind. My second bottle this month, same disgorgement of May 2019. 100% Pinot Blanc, no dosage, created from 65 year old vines on Kimmeridgian soil, farmed biodynamically. This really showed a nice floral aromatic last night. Juicy and round, lots of flavor and yet with the absence of dosage, there is still some austerity here that I enjoy. Cantaloupe melon, spearmint and a wet stone finish. I really like this wine and I'm intent on trying more off Piollot's cuvees.

When I visited Dominique Moreau at Marie Courtin a few years back, I was able to try a little of Roland Piollot's wines, who is Dominique's husband. He was driving the forklift that day as there was disgorgement going on at the winery. Since then, I hadn't opened any of the wines but recently I grabbed a couple of this 100% Pinot Blanc cuvee to check in. 65 year old vines on Kimmeridgian soil. This is zero dosage, farmed organic (although the estate is now farming biodynamic), disgorged May 2019, which gave the wine almost 4 years on the lees....pretty cool. This is flat out delicious, with tiny, persistent bubbles. A pure lemon to the wine, with some melon when cool. As it warms and aerates, the texture becomes juicier, yet the energy in the wine broadens out. It then picks up pineapple and pear, dried lime with plenty of saline coming from the soil, and I suspect the lack of dosage. You might be able to fool some folks that this wasn't pure Chablis, as it has the clean, mineral lines and flavors of Chard from that area. This was $49 US and is worth a reload. Lovely stuff.

Firs time with this V et S bottling. 100% Pinot Blanc, zero dosage, disgorged 01-02-17 with base of 2014 and farmed biodynamic. Bottle 701. This is good. Mix of light lemon, a touch of pineapple, pear and chalk, finishing with a deep cut of refresing minerality. Between the moderate acidity and structure that wraps the fruit elements, this is very good and worth seeking a few more to age into the short-term. I'm liking V et S more and more and beginning to build some inventory of their wines now.

Base is 2014, 100% Pinot Blanc. Made sans soufre with no dosage. This cuvee is unique (hence the name) as it is every vintage an experimental bottling that Aurelian Gerbais will create. This vintage he chose the PB, to make it in this very minimal fashion of inputs. Intense with plenty of spine, a liquefied rock sensation with lemon intensity and some finishing melon. This was very cool to taste and powerful.

Base is 2013. Disgorged 10/2017, with 3 g/l of dosage. This is 100% Pinot Blanc, coming from the family's oldest plot that was planted in 1904 by the great grandfather of the domaine. Aurielian, who is the son who manages the domaine now reveres this plot because as he says "all of our generations have walked on it". Stone fruit, melon and showing a terrific energy and acidity. My thought in my notes says 'energy going in all directions'. Shows grapefruit on the finish that is very prominent, along with a touch of green apple. Terrific.

2016 Matthiasson Pinot Blanc Yount Mill Vineyard

Oakville more

12/7/2017 - Frank Murray III wrote: NR

Opened yesterday. Don't drink this varietal very often so don't have a context of what generally to expect. Bronzy in color (not oxidized) with aromatics of pear and light petrol note. Bit glossy in texture, round and more soft than complex. Pretty easy to drink and given the complexity, I'd not see the strategy in aging the wine. Doesn't have the appeal and draw of the other Matthiasson whites, like the Linda Vista or the White Wine.

I think this was NV, although Steve said the base wine was 2010. Bitter note in the palate, which he said reminded him of peach pit. Good cut here with complexity, too. Leaner style, lemon peel and very good overall. EB in style, which aligns to my palate these days very nicely.

The Wines OF Roberty Foley--The OC Strikes Again (Antanello's In Costa Mesa (Orange County)): Melon, spice, which is a mix IMO of the fruit and some heat (??). Seemed a bit heavy for me and lacked the refreshing capacity that this wine can do.
