1/1/2024 - Glenn Gilbert Likes this wine: 90 points12.5% alcohol; imported by Pernod Ricard, New York City; screw top with metal cap aroma of sweetness embedded in pithy fruit; long legs, very pale transparent yellow; opened and tasted 30 minutes later in a Marquis by Waterford glass designed for white wines at 15 degrees C; nose of grapefruit; (very) ripe oranges and kiwi, alcohol in the background; on the tongue a full-bodied wallop of tannins, grasses, citrus (especially grapefruit) and gooseberries; in the middle a shaft of steel/titanium in the form of a penetrating fruit that doesn't exist in nature; the ripe orange flavors shape a third dimension, like the deep bass from a good woofer; long finish, calls for pairing with seafood of any kind -- I'm thinking especially of oysters on the half shell with a full range of condiments |

A slightly sweaty, cooked citrus appears as it opens with a twist of sea salt. On entry, lots of ripe fruit with English gooseberry, russet apples and warmed blood grapefruit. Intense, there is a warm to the wine offset by its fresh, edgy acidity. Very much a down-the-line NZ Sauvignon Blanc; the finish is a little short. Uncomplicated with some elderflower on the close. |

When back home I saw the 12 year old vintage, was expecting a washed out faded wine at best and had a bottle of Viré-Clessé 2020 in reserve this evening in case it was a disaster. I need not have worried. It had aged very gracefully. It was not a big wine by now but subtle and complex showing mature white fruit, hints of acacia, discreet minerals and slightly petrol note on the firm finish which I could have mistaken for Riesling. Good. |
