2018 Kiona Cabernet Franc Kiona Estate

Red Mountain more

Wine #20 in our weekly Washington Wine Wednesday series. Nose - violets, vegetal, dark cherries, black pepper. As always a two hour decant. First glass is overpowering with tannins. The tannins hide what appears to be some nice fruit behind it. Second glass opened up to be fruity, earthy and pretty tasty. Purchased to offset a tasting fee. Would do the same again - but likely would not purchase this outright.

Wine was dominated by a strong alcohol note (15.6%!). Otherwise, it was mostly black fruits, baking spice, tannic, and fairly extracted. Maybe I got a bad bottle?

A very fine wine. Decant for 1-2 hours. Had with meat and by itself, both of which were good.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It tastes like blackberry. The body is light/medium. The wine finishes short.

This was somewhat of a classic cab sauv. Black fruit including blackberry, black currant, toast, and vanilla. Dry with decent high tannins and some acidity. Medium to long finish. Had it with beef tenderloin with marjoram essence, black cassava and a mushroom medley.

Had this with sea bass with a parsnip purée, saffron vanilla sauce and berry medley glaze as part of a tasting and pairing. Wine spike with black cherry, raspberry and some light earth tones and oak. Went well with the bass with medium acidity, medium to high tannins and medium finish.

Had this as part of a wine and dinner tasting/pairing. Never had a Lemberger wine before, I want to try more. Pale ruby or garnet but with an intriguing nose. Some cherry and currant that was buttery with possibly a hint of nuttiness. Hard to put your finger (or nose) on. Really drank nicely with some oak and the buttery fruit expressing itself. Had some definite acidity and a pleasant body and finish. I want to try more Lemberger! Paired with asparagus and Fuji apple gazpacho with walnut parsley pistou and crab.

Part of a wine tasting dinner pairing. This was very tropical with melon, mango, pineapple and straw. Medium acidity and body with riper fruit. It was very pleasant with a medium finish and alcohol. It was paired with smoked salmon, melon and caviar. I would definitely get a bottle, great summer sipper!

Nose: medium+ intensity aromas of black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, red cherry, raspberry, violet, black currant, black plum, leather, raisin, jammy
Palate: high alcohol, dry, full body, medium+ intensity, medium acid, medium+ tannin, medium+ finish, additional meaty note-like gravy for turkey

Misc: purchased on clearance, will almost certainly grab more bottles if i see them, as this is much more alive than I was expecting

2021 Kiona Pinot Noir Lemberger

Oregon/Washington Red Blend more

2/29/2024 - novocane Likes this wine: 90 points

Red mountain wineries don't typically grow or produce Pinot Noirs as the climate is not conducive for this varietal. Kiona did a fruit trade with Bjornson and made this interesting blend of Pinot noir and Lemberger (and a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon). Lemberger is a red grape of central Europe, grown in places like the Czech Republic, Serbia, Austria, Germany. It is not commonly grown in US, let alone at red mountain.

So Kiona decided to pair it with some Oregon Pinot and make a Washington Pinot noir - Lemberger. I'm game. The 1% Cabernet Sauvignon is interesting, but at such small volume, it's kind of hard to tell it's effects.

246 cases, 13.7% ABV, 43% new french oak, barrelled for 18 months. More winemaking details in the info card.

Pale ruby color, tangy red cherries on the nose.

You taste the fruit forward fresh Oregon Pinot noir on the front. Medium acidity, tangy red fruit, cherry and pomagranite. As it develops on the palette, the Lemberger comes through. A little grapefruit, a little bitterness, astringency. Rounded out by some french oak on the back.

Interesting grape that goes surprisingly well with the Pinot. On the other hand, it doesn't have that great tangy fruit linger-on-the-tongue flavors of great Pinot noir.

2/28/2024 - novocane Likes this wine: 92 points

2019 Estate Red Mountain Heart of the Hill Cabernet Sauvignon. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petite Sirah, 5% Carmenere, 2% Merlot. 100% estate from heart of the hill. 15.5% ABV. 55% new french oak and 8.5% new American oak.

Deep purple color. scent of rain off forest floor and blueberries.

A strong wine. High alcohol, deep purple color. Nose with a strong funk. Front hits with funky blueberry, immediately followed by strong oak. Only 8.5% American oak, but it feels like more. But the intensity of the wine can handle the oak. It needs some time to integrate. Very masculine wine.

Color - pale ruby almost pinkish.

Nose - funky grapefruit, background raspberry.

Taste - medium acidity. Grapefruit, astringent. Kind of the tangy side of Pinot. Interesting grape I don't have too much experience with.

Not bad.

Just OK for $10. Starts out nice, but there's an unpleasant acidity on the finish. Supposedly 90% cabernet but doesn't taste like it. I appreciate that it's not overly modern or extracted, but just not that enjoyable.

From Kiana:

WINEMAKING:
100% hand-picked into macrobins. Mechanically and optically sorted into 1.5 ton open-top stainless fermenters. Combination of twice-daily manual punchdowns and punchovers. Full ML in barrel, topped 6x per year. 40 months 46% new oak (37% French, 8% American, 1% Hungarian).

ESTATE VINEYARD COMPOSITION:
38% Kiona Estate
29% Artz Vineyard
19% Ranch at the End of the Road
8% Heart of the Hill
6% Sunset Bench

VARIETAL COMPOSITION:
86% Cabernet Sauvignon
8% Cabernet Franc
3% Merlot
3% Petit Verdot

VINTAGE NOTES:
The 2019 vintage on Red Mountain was similar to years prior, with heat accumulation coming in approximately 4% lower than 2018. Clear skies and a predictable summer resulted in a “by-the-book” ripening period. A relatively early frost created a bit of a crunch towards the end of the vintage.

Dark ruby bordering on purple. Nose has oaky notes but not overpowering. Taste has plums, figs, a hint of pepper and tannins are very smooth. Moderate acid. Seems like it was the perfect time to drink this one.

1997 Kiona Late Harvest White Riesling

Yakima Valley more

12/26/2016 - Mossrose wrote: 86 points

The main color is a transparent not pretty brown, with a red tint. The main aroma is caramel with a touch of oxidation. But the sip thankfully shows none of the flaws suggested by the look and smell. A creamy texture, light sweetness, and insufficient but still helpful acidity. The fruit flavor is a mix of apple and pear cider with fig and raisin. Ultimately, this Washington Riesling comes across as tired and much inferior to the late harvested ones from Germany, from seriously lacking in refreshing acidity, bright and delicious citrus fruit, and possibly most decisively, the age worthiness to merit keeping for 19 years.
