Super thick, with some tasters guessing PX. Relentless aromatics and thrilling intensity.

Screwcap, 14.8% alc.
inky red-black, opaque.

Aromas of cola, tar, blackberry, plum, nutty earth, and pan juices. Some alcohol fume.

Glossy, dense palate. Richly fruited with a lot of the tertiary complexity coming forward. Slippery in the mouth. Chalky tannins have softened considerably since the previous bottle. Alcohol isn’t obvious on the palate except for the glossy/slippery texture.
A delightful herbal, nutty, meaty aroma emerges with extended airing.

Just plopped it:
Enormous shiraz-notes filled the kitchen.
The small sip to make sure there's no cork taint (screwcap, but nevertheless an important part of preparation).

TN coming soon.

This Australian Shiraz from the Barossa Valley reveals itself in a deep, almost black color, hinting at concentration and potential complexity.

Nose: the wine's aromatic bouquet fills the room with captivating scents of Australian Syrah. It's an enticing blend of iron-earthiness, with strong hints of fennel and sweet licorice, inviting me to explore further.

Palate: The wine exhibits its youthfulness with bold and assertive characteristics. It boasts a massive body, almost chewy, reminiscent of a champion bodybuilder: finely balanced. The acidity takes hold of the palate with authority, creating a lively and vibrant experience. The wine's abundant fruitiness is carefully reined in, offering an enjoyable contrast. While the alcohol presence may feel pronounced to some, it contributes to the wine's ability to cut through meat and cleanse the palate.

Tannins: Surprisingly, the tannins initially appeared almost lost. However, they evolved and become more prominent with extended decanting and as the evening went by.

Finish: long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression of its exceptional quality and character. It showcases the potential for aging gracefully and developing even greater depth over time. And this wine is still but a padawan.

Overall: The 2009 Dutschke Shiraz Oscar Semmler is a tribute to the legacy of Oscar Semmler and a promise of uncompromising quality. This Shiraz captures the essence of Barossa Valley's winemaking heritage and stands as a testament to the Dutschke family's dedication. It's an unapologetically youthful wine with a commanding presence, promising an exciting evolution with medium to long-term aging.

The wine presents a compelling narrative through its rich history, and its remarkable quality lives up to the anticipation. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for the future, it offers a truly memorable tasting experience.

If I had a few bottles: I'd keep them.

2010 was the big year in the Barossa. 2011 was wet and difficult. Yet gems still exist. This is one of them. Well crafted blend of Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot. Dark deep ink red with hints of brown. Vanilla, cigar box, alcohol. Cornucopia of red berries, plums with a solid backbone of peppery spice. Lingering, cleansing tannins. Delightful

Deep bright gold. Oily/buttery esters. Still a very dry flinty aperitif style, bordering on being Burgundian.

Beautiful colour and bouquet. Let down by structure the high alcohol masked somewhat in its youth. Nice but not stupendous.

ABV: 15.0%. Upon opening, there's a lot of savory notes on the nose with tapenade, Mediterranean herbs, and leather. After about a hour, dark red and black fruits slowly begin to appear (think plums, bramble berries, etc.). On the palate, there's still a little bit of tannic grip and a slight traceof alcoholic heat. The acidity is well-integrated and there's a good finish. This wine is at its peak so decant it for about 30 minutes prior to serving.

2/8/2023 - Raised the score by three points (from 91 to 94). 24 hours after opening, beautiful and bright red fruits now apppear on the nose (think raspberries, red plums, etc.). The tannins have softened overnight, the acid is now even more integrated, and the alcohol is no longer noticeable, making this a very juicy drink. I really wish I had some pot roast or smoked brisket to pair with this.

Maybe flawed? Maybe not. Just tired over wrought aussie juice not particularly attractive and shrill on the shortish finish. Some eucalyptus interfering with any fruit that may have been discernable but probably not. Did not like like.

Back in the day I bought these for the ridiculous price of $5.99 for a high quality wine, and gave away or drank a couple of cases. I found a straggler, and we had it at Cull Party 2022. It's best days are past, but it's still very true to the grape and would impress Oscar Semmler.

Dutschke tasting 2006 (Brisbane): Rich fruitcake, raisin and Darjeeling tea-leaf on nose. Quite spiritous on palate which allowed it to finish very cleanly. Excellent length. A better example of tokay than the muscat was of the muscat variety. Very good value for money, but again, didn’t blow me away.
