2018 de Négoce Syrah OG N.99

Walla Walla Valley more

12/11/2021 - fullpour Does not like this wine: NR

One of the more interesting failures I've drunk recently, to be honest. The best Rocks syrah I've had tends towards more of a Northern Rhône model, but this was seemingly designed to be more like a humongous Aussie shiraz - high alcohol, high extract, lots of oak, more more more. It's an intensely tiring, punishingly huge wine that tastes of nowhere in particular. That said, the quality is fine - it's not _bad_ bad, it's just unnecessary, unconvincing, and overall kind of a bummer.

Probably one of the best pink Pinots I've had; refreshing + serious at the same time. Dry, mineral, delicious.

Well… damned if this didn’t somehow get the memo about being, y’know, kinda sucky and start behaving properly. Finally. This wine is drinking well now; it’s an entirely adequate pink wine, offensive to none, with hints of being slightly better than your average California rosé. Smucker’s strawberry jam, a hint of Krispy Kreme, and a decent creamy finish. Wish I’d have been more patient with this stuff!

2018 de Négoce CSM OG N.153

Columbia Valley Red Blend more

This is the vinous equivalent of a straight to DVD release that should have been a sleeper arthouse hit. CSM blends always struck me as more an Australian than American blend, but this wine shows how much we’re missing out. Rich, ripe Washington fruit, mouth-watering acidity, with dark date-sugar sucrosité and a sneaky green pepper note from what I assume is the Cabernet that added welcome complexity. It’s not sweet, don’t get me wrong, but definitely New World ripe and that’s a good thing; the oak is polite and not intrusive. I ran half the bottle through a blender which gave it a more open, plush feel; the unadulterated half of the bottle gave a more uptight, almost French, mineral vibe which was delicious in its own way. Mixing the two? Heaven.

Elegant wine, could be mistaken for The Virgilius. Almond-meal notes, slightly bitter blossoms, well-judged mouthfeel, full and rich without teetering into sugar- or oiliness. Lingering finish of orange blossom water and marzipan (but again, not sweet!). Pro tip: take it out of the fridge an hour or two before serving + give it some air; it's better closer to room temperature.

A very fine Chardonnay. Exudes kind of an oatmeal cookie vibe; hints at butterscotch. Middleweight texture, vibrant acidity, and a come-hither nose of pear, hazelnut, and faint matchstick. If I'd tasted this blind I would have thought it was French.

More than decent Oregon pinot; lovely, plush notes of kola nut and sweet spices. My only minor quibble is that it could stand a bit more acidity, but other than that? Damn fine stuff, really. It did improve with about an hour's worth of air, so if you're drinking this soon, I'd strongly recommend you decant it a bit ahead of time.

Wonderfully complex; tastes of marzipan, peaches, talc, clover honey, and mint, with an elegant, minerally backbone. Soft, gentle, luxurious without being flabby or boring.

This is exceptionally well made wine: dead serious, well structured, and delicious with strong cheese. However, it's also not a heck of a lot of fun - this is likely unfair to the winemaker, but I found myself wishing this were trashier than it actually is. I'd be hard pressed to find any kind of varietal characteristics here - even though I grew up close to Tokay High School in Lodi, I've never seen wine made from Flame Tokay in my life - but I suspect most of I'm tasting here is the winemaker, not the grape. (Not a complaint! It's classy AF.)

TL;DR: excellent wine that easily holds its own with the best orange/skin-ferment wines I've had, but don't mistake it for party-time rosé!

Four-hour decant. Strikingly pale for red wine, the kind of shade that makes folks wonder if it's any good based on the color alone. Ethereal wild strawberry with very fine tannin and just a whisper of dried herbs and forest floor, elegant as all get-out, then rudely interrupted by trashy acidity that poops the party but only for a moment or two. I'd suggest holding on to these until 2022 to give that acidity time to rein itself in if I were you.

This wine is the Crystal Pepsi of rosé, but without the carbonation, flavor, élan, or taste.

Some good things I can say about this wine: it is wine, the bottle is sturdy, the label is aligned correctly, and the cork did not leak. It is neither sweet nor overly acidic.

Some other things I can say about this wine: this wine tastes is like ecru and beige had a love child - but without the love. Although it is rosé, any given scene in Zack Snyder's Justice League has more vibrant color than this wine. There is not enough alcohol here to impart any kind of mouthfeel or good time party vibes; at just over 10%, it's unclear why anyone bothered. Your first sip will inevitably lead to the soul-crushing realization that you are wasting valuable minutes of your life trying to find any kind of joy or meaning in the bottle. You may even find yourself come to the realization that even the worst bottle of white Zin is better value for money, if only because you could amuse yourself talking trash about the Zin.

This bottle is a Zen kōan that poses a simple question: What is the taste of absence?

I have given away the rest of the case that I ordered. This appears to be causing long term damage to old friendships, alas. If you have any of this, here are some things it might be useful as:

- If full, holds down loose papers
- If empty, can be spun (caution: not a good idea because pandemic)
- Really spiffs up Ikea kitchen displays; even if you don't work there, you might be able to just ditch it in a SVALNÄS
- Potentially useful to concentrate sunlight and kindle a fire (untested)
- Can be used as a rolling pin in a pinch
- Fits most Peloton bikes #Pelo4Wine
- With optional de Négoce nipple attachment: highly inappropriate baby bottle
- Keeps Robert Parker off your lawn
- Ballast

Very little varietal character here. Flabby, dilute, not unpleasant, just disappointing. Lovely look to the wine though - obviously unfiltered.

Not bad, but it somehow tastes like a salvage job - there's something weirdly yeasty about this wine. I can't help but wonder if this is what happens when you wait too long to pick the grapes + the fermentation sticks due to overhigh sugar levels... Even so, not bad value for money.
