2/14/2024 - Meerlust wrote: 90 pointsLight golden color confirm’s this 17 year old champagne’s age. Upon opening, the nose is full of citrus and mineral notes. The flavor profile is unique as apple and lemon start with a stark transition to quinine and acid before finishing with caramel apple notes. It was neither bready or yeasty, but it has ample acidity with some mineral harshness offset by caramel richness. This was an intriguing champagne and my first foray into vintage Perrier-Jouet’s Belle Epoque. |

11/25/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 91 points14.3% alcohol and 164 cases produced. Even after 15 years, inky purple center with a violet rim and no signs of bricking. The nose explodes from the glass with ripe blackberry, black cherry, cedar, and vanilla notes. In the mouth, this is a classic Napa wine packed with dense black fruit, blackberry, blueberry, and cherry, in addition to some oak notes of chocolate and vanilla. Full-bodied and dense, this wine has a plush mouthfeel with some tannin still present, but it is not harsh or intrusive on the long finish. Consumed with medium-rare steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and house rolls for Thanksgiving. This wine paired well with the steak, as expected, but it was also big enough to handle the asparagus, which was a bit of a surprise. Overall, I really enjoyed this wine for its dense fruit and scale, and while we all preferred the more complex 1996 Sociando-Mallet, I cannot wait to taste another bottle in 10 more years. |

11/25/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 92 points12.5% alcohol. Medium garnet center with some orange bricking at the rim. This has a stunningly complex “old school” nose of green tobacco, mint, barnyard, earth, and red fruits such as cherry and raspberry. The palate is equally complex with tart cranberry, tobacco, mint, cedar, and rosemary throughout the long finish. Unsurprisingly, medium-bodied on the palate with supportive acidity and fully integrated tannins that provide a rounded mouthfeel to this perfectly aged wine. Consumed with medium rare steak, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and dinner rolls for Thanksgiving. It paired well with everything, including the asparagus, because the herbal backbone matched the rosemary in the steak as well as the greenness of the asparagus. Overall, this is why I age Bordeaux. It was great with food and on its own, and while I do not love underripe wines, I can appreciate a touch of green for complexity. My son said it was one of the best wines I have opened for him, and it was unanimously preferred over the 2008 Bevan Cellars David’s Cuvée Showket Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, not an easy feat. |

11/5/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 92 pointsDark purple center with a light purple rim. The nose was packed with youthful, dark cherry and blackberry initially with cedar and vanilla as supporting notes. On the palate, with wine displayed intense dark fruit coupled with a subtle oak influence of vanilla and cedar. Although this was full-bodied, the acidity gave this wine vibrancy and character. Overall, this was a great effort from Jeff Ames, and I look forward to opening another at the 20 year mark. |

11/8/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 91 pointsPale ruby red color with bricking at rim, age appropriate. Very complex, autumnal nose of decaying leaves, earth, raspberry, cranberry, cherry, and anise. The flavor profile was well aged with cherry, raspberry, and cranberry fruit supported by cocoa and earthy undertones. While medium bodied, it did not seem overdone because of its balanced acidity and velvety mouthfeel. Overall, this wine was quite complex, and while I feared it might be past it’s time, my fears were unfounded. It is clearly older, based on the nose and flavor profile, but it was not faded and could make it to its 15th birthday before beginning its downward slope. |

9/10/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 91 pointsLight ruby red color which is consistent with its age. The nose was red-fruited with cherry and rhubarb as well as earthy, savory notes to add complexity. On the palate, the flavors leave the starting gate with red fruits from the nose as well as a hint of peach, kick into second gear with earthy notes, and hit a top gear with some stemmy, woody notes as well as a touch of bitterness and drying tannin to round out the profile. It is a light-bodied wine with balanced acidity, but it has solid flavor depth across the midpalate and finish. Overall, this is a wine that comes across as delicate and detailed with complexity that will grow with more bottle age. It was a lovely pairing with our pistachio, beet, orange, and goat cheese salad as well as pepper-crusted bacon and green pea risotto. |

7/11/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 90 pointsMedium yellow color with watery rim. The expressive nose provides green apple, ample lemon, and white floral notes. On the palate, this wine was young with green apple, tart lemon, and minerals. There is crisp acidity in this medium bodied wine and comparisons to chablis are not unfounded. The finish was clean and crisp with a touch of light, toasty oak in the background. On day 2, this wine began to round out with more fruit depth and solid acidity making it more balanced than night 1. Overall, this is clearly well-made without the tropical fruit profile that can be found in certain renditions. It was all about crispness and freshness of fruit with some mineral complexity. I expect this wine will round out with age to become something quite enjoyable. |

4/6/2023 - Meerlust wrote: 90 pointsSurprisingly, this was still purple colored with no real bricking. This merlot-based wine has a solid nose of plum, blackberry, tobacco, and green notes for complexity. The palate is not about power but requires some contemplation to appreciate this medium-bodied wine. The flavor profile follows the nose with the addition of a soy note on the finish. Overall, this is a lovely wine of finesse, rather than size. It paired beautifully with flank steak. |

The palate is complex with tart cherry, raspberry, cloves, hints of cocoa, and decayed leaves. Initially, there was a bitter edge, but that evaporated quickly with air and blossomed into ripe cherry. Structurally, there is tangy acidity to create a lively mouthfeel and a long finish of cherries and autumnal leaves. |

The nose is quite lovely with roses, tilled earth, bing cherry, and a hint of tar. On the palate, cherry, cranberry, roses, graphite, cinnamon, bbq spice, smoked meat, and a hint of tarry bitterness on the mid palate. This medium-bodied wine has vibrant acidity that accentuates the red fruit and floral notes with dusty, integrated tannins and a slightly clipped finish. With homemade lasagna, the spices are enhanced, it it paired beautifully with the food. Overall, my last bottle, and it was absolutely delicious. |

12/29/2022 - Meerlust wrote: 91 pointsDark, inky center with purple rim. Excellent nose that is packed with blackberry, raspberry, dark cherry, and light oak. Very plush on the palate with ripe fruit and complimentary acidity. The finish is long with solid fruit and rounded tannins. On day two, there seems to be a touch of woody bitterness, but the fruit remains full and ripe. Overall, this full-bodied wine is very enjoyable for its ripe fruit and balanced structure. It held its own against a 2012 Sojourn George III Vineyard and a 2015 Sojourn Beckstoffer George III. |

Overall, this was not particularly memorable on its own, but with beef bourguignon it really filled out its flavor profile. The dark cherry and plum became the centerpiece with balanced acidity melding with the beef and a mineral streak assisted with a clean finish. |

We paired it with Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups, really delicious, and bleu cheese that gave an amazing juxtaposition of salty and sweet on the palate. |

This wine has a moderately intense nose of lemon curd, citrus, vanilla, and hazelnut undertones. On the palate, there is ample lemon curd, lime, hazelnut, buttery notes, and butterscotch with food. The acidity was bright, making this medium bodied wine feel lighter in the mouth. With risotto, the wine really highlights the butterscotch with amble acidity to match the dish’s richness. This is a great representation of a Hyde Vineyard chardonnay. |

On the palate, tart cranberry up front with ripe cherry and raspberry in the middle of this light bodied wine. There is balanced acidity to made this a vibrant wine with a silky mouthfeel. The finish is balanced with pure red fruit and a tart edge. This paired beautifully with the bacon and pea risotto because the acidity cut the food’s richness while standing up to the earthiness of the peas. |
