2020 Château Lilian LadouysSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/13/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 89 pointsRipe fruit, hint of vanilla on the nose. Closed initially, needed some time in glass but ended up to be an enjoyable experience. A bit thin and short, but smooth with mild tannins. Lacks acidity but enough to bring freshness. My gut tells me to drink young, it's not going to improve too much with age. Lilian Ladouys is a consistent producer and one of my favorite everyday wines. This was my first bottle of 2020 and seems to show a little weaker than other vintages. Still enjoyable, easy to source and a bottle I recommend to friends looking for a good example of a Saint-Estephe wine. |

2016 Poggio il Castellare Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
5/12/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 89 pointsSubtle Brunello. Cherry on the nose, oak. Some secondary notes, graphite and stone. Thin, not a lot of extract Smooth tannins, well integrated. The wine shows some maturity. I do like this wine and buy consistently from the producer, but think of it as "Brunello light." It's not in your face, easy to drink but high quality. There's quite a bit more complexity than their Rosso, but it's still an easy, hot summer's day bottle. |

2012 Stonestreet LegacyAlexander Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/12/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 93 pointsFirst off, I really like this wine. I first tasted it in 2014 at Stonestreet and it was a superstar when compared to their other red offerings during the tasting. For me this wine is either near the top of the vintage for the genre in 2012 or a disappointment. I'll explain: I purchased two cases directly from Stonestreet~2014 and a third from an estate sale in 2022. The two cases I've cellared in a consistent climate for the past 20 years is still drinking young with lots of red fruit, oak on the nose and grippy tannins with some fresh acidity. Exactly what you'd expected from a meritage with a few years in bottle. The other bottles are showing age, drinking past peak with jammy fruit and a bitter finish. BUT, the "older bottles" have wonderfully integrated tannins and a smooth finish. I think that properly cellared, this wine has yet to peak, but it's close. My "bad" bottles encourage me to continue sampling for the next few years from the "good" ones. |

2010 QuintessaRutherford Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/12/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 92 pointsI'm a Quintessa fan but my last two 2010 bottles fell a little short of what I have come to expect, perhaps just a little past peak. There was still some ripe red fruit with secondary notes of spices and pencil lead. Palate was a bit thin with a little heat on the tail, tannins were sparse but fine, not at all grippy. Finish was medium long. To be fair, my bottles were marked as having questionable cellaring before I acquired them in 2018 which may have impacted the experience. Typically, Quintessa is a solid 95+ for me, even in weak years so this was a bit of a disappointment. I would look forward to trying it again with a clean cellaring history. |

1989 Château TalbotSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/20/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 90 pointsMy last bottle of the 89 and the one with the most suspect cellaring. It was past peak but still drinkable. Subtle fruit, lots of tertiary notes on the nose. Still some acidity, not dead, mellow tannins. Still pretty well balanced although its definitely on the back side of the curve. We enjoyed the bottle but were very glad we opened it. We had 7 bottles of the 89, the other six were properly cellared since delivery in 91. I think they aged better, so this bottle may be a bit of a gamble depending on history. |

2007 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
3/15/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 93 pointsWe just dusted off a few bottles that have been cellared at the source in Montalcino. Beautiful wine with maybe a little time left; Drinking close to peak. Subtle sour cherry, notes of pencil and spice. Leather. Palate matches the nose with smooth tannins and still some fresh acidity. Showing age with obvious brick change at the rim fading into a subtle garnet. It did need some time in air. This was an immaculately stored bottle so seems to have some time left but I plan to drink our remaining bottles soon. |

2019 Evening Shade Pinot NoirCalifornia more |
3/9/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 84 pointsThis was a surprising, cheap wine sourced from Fresh Market, around $7 on sale. The nose was lovely with mature red fruit notes and some earthiness. The palate was a little flat, didn't follow the nose but not bad. A tad thin with a short-medium finish. I'm leaving a tasting note because overall this was a very good for the money and would hold it's own nicely against much higher dollar wines. |

2018 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Rosso di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
3/8/2024 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 90 pointsCherry on the nose, very clean wine. Very very subtle complexity after a little air. Very pleasurable Rosso to drink now. Shows some age and may be peaking earlier than you expected. We plan to drink the rest of ours this year. |

6/21/2023 - imsilver78 wrote: 94 pointsDrank well after an hour in air. Still young but starting to meld nicely. Red fruit on the nose which followed to the palate. Descent acidity, round with a silky mouth feel. I'll probably re-visit my other bottles in a few years, but I think this bottle is nearly mature and ready if you prefer a more crisp Bordeaux early in its window. |

7/4/2022 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 92 pointsRed color fading to earth tones and brick at the rim showing maturity. Did not decant and would not recommend the extra time in air. Some slight VA that burned off in the glass in mintues. |

6/29/2022 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 88 pointsQuiet nose at first, opened over a couple of hours. Red fruit but savory, black currant. Tannins on the coarse side, long finish. A little young, with a lot of potential. Great value for price. Very drinkable now, look forward to a little more age. |

1977 Dow Porto VintagePort Blend more |
6/11/2022 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 95 pointsRuby color with just a hint of age showing. Spice but balanced. Exactly what you expect from vintage port, nothing jumps out. Has a lot of life left. Drank directly after opening. No meaningful change after an hour in air. Cork was about to go, openend just in time. |

2016 La Castellina Chianti Classico Riserva SquarcialupiChianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
6/11/2022 - imsilver78 Likes this wine: 88 pointsThis wine was a challenge. When I first opened it, I almost wrote it off. I decanted and left while I cooked dinner and when I returned it had completely changed character. Initially flat, closed with a burnt asphalt and tar finish. After an hourin the decanter, open, dried fruit, sour cherry. Medium bodied and smooth. Nose matched the palette. Short but pleasant finish. A well balanced wine. In June of 2022, it showed slight signs of age, subtle bricking and balanced. It turned out to be a very drinkable wine that I would buy again, but armed with the knowledge that you have to coax it out. |

Beautiful ruby color, smooth. Acidity. Hot. May just need more time. I have two bottles left and look forward to revisitng in 2-3 years. |
