1996 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande DameChampagne Blend more |
4/8/2024 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 96 pointsDeep, honeyed gold; brioche, hazelnut, caramel, whipped butter; broad and weighty but incredibly focussed, precise, concentrated; ripe, almost tropical, ginger, orange peel, apricot; extraordinary length; dry, refreshing finish, grippy but not astringent. Absolutely exceptional and surely at its peak. |

1991 Chateau MusarBekaa Valley Red Blend more |
3/16/2024 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 94 pointsBright, fresh on the nose; hint of volatility on first opening; intense, concentrated iodine, spice, cherry drops, redcurrant, violet, cola bottles; superb lift, acidity in highwire act but perfectly balanced with intensity of the palate; reminds me of v good old Rioja; perhaps lacks the spiced complexity of some vintages, but tannins fully resolved to leave sweet fruit core with just enough structure to hold everything together. Really concentrated, focussed intensity; no reason to think it will improve further but it’s flying right now. |

1996 Gaja BarbarescoNebbiolo more |
12/23/2023 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 94 pointsQuite closed on day one, but by day two it’s singing: clove, spice, fig, Christmas cake, violet, truffle, iodine, tar, rose petal, a top note of menthol; palate in perfect balance with ripe, mature tannins giving firm structure, slightly drying on the finish; all in all, in the ideal spot for this wine, just mature enough to have softened completely while maintaining all of its poise and structure. |

2004 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage BrutChampagne Blend more |
12/22/2023 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 93 pointsInitially quite reticent on the nose, but rapidly opens up to yeasty, toasty aroma; rich and full on the palate while simultaneously being remarkably focussed and precise; long stone-fruit finish. |

2014 Sugrue Pierre The Trouble With DreamsWest Sussex Champagne Blend more |
12/21/2023 - SussexRH wrote: 92 pointsRich nose of baked apples, cream; ripe stone fruit, redcurrants, malted milk biscuit; full, round texture with a lift of focussed acidity; shortish finish but bright and refreshing. |

2001 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) MagariToscana IGT Red Bordeaux Blend more |
12/20/2023 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 93 pointsRich blackcurrant — almost Ribena-like — and menthol, eucalyptus, mocha on the nose; immediately open and expressive; firm structure with well-developed tannins underneath a generous, ripe palate; long cassis finish. |

1964 La Rioja Alta Rioja Reserva 904Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
1/14/2023 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 94 pointsAt Rekondo for Bethan’s birthday. Heady and highly perfumed with frankincense, sweet redcurrant, blackberry; sweet entry, vanilla oak, midpalate tending closer to Burgundian breadth and savouriness; light, ethereal, dances across the palate; opens up to mushroom/truffle on the end; still full of life, elegant with a long, long finish; begins to fade after an hour (no decanting) but so much still to offer after nearly 60 years. |

1969 Château GuiraudSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
1/14/2023 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 90 pointsDeep gold, rich and intense; muscavado; blossom, candied orange peel, tawny marmalade; crème brûlée; long, lingering, tangy finish. |

1982 Château d'AngludetMargaux Red Bordeaux Blend more |
12/24/2022 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 92 pointsOpened after dinner on Christmas Eve. Immediately open and expressive, sweet ripe fruit and Christmas cake; beautifully balanced with a richness of texture, soft tannins and a long finish. Drinking perfectly now but no reason it shouldn’t go another 5-10 years, very few tertiary notes now and still fruit-forward. |

1990 Chateau MusarBekaa Valley Red Blend more |
12/20/2022 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 90 pointsCork soaked through, removed with a Durand; highly volatile on opening, heavily bricked at the rim, some oxidative notes and generally unpromising. But with time in the glass it opened out to one of the lighter, more charming examples of Musar I’ve tasted. It remains volatile, and lacks the fruit and spice of more robust vintages — and seems occasionally to teeter on the edge of being entirely undrinkable — but for a Musar purist it’s enjoyable and quite seductive. |

1959 Château PalmerMargaux Red Bordeaux Blend more |
11/12/2022 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 96 pointsChristmas cake, rich black fruit, fig, malt loaf; sweet cedarwood and cigar box; totally poised, balanced, still ripe on the nose; rounded, cool on the palate, healthy acidity but perfectly in balance with soft, robust texture; after 30 minutes, opening up to a more savoury character and richer, velvet texture. Outstanding. |

1976 Château Léoville Las CasesSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
10/15/2022 - SussexRH wrote: 94 pointsBracing, forthright; not awkward or angular but undoubtedly still some firmness to it; an undertone of ripe, sweet black fruit still clinging on under well-developed bramble, spice, and fig. Utterly charming, perfectly resolved, no doubt beyond its peak but remains full of life and vigour. |

1997 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La ChapelleSyrah more |
8/20/2022 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 93 pointsDecanted for 20-30 minutes; immediately open and approachable, highly perfumed, fragrant spice, leather, bramble, mocha; backbone of acidity — initially even slightly unbalanced — that settles into fully mature, weighty, rounded texture; at its peak right now, charming tertiary character will continue to develop but it’s perfectly poised right now with structure and acidity in harmony; none of the awkwardness that sometimes characterises La Chapelle, a thoroughly enticing and intriguing wine. |

1995 Château MontroseSt. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more |
7/10/2022 - SussexRH wrote: 89 pointsClassic, dark fruit nose, blackberry and cassis, mint leaf, violet; certainly not austere but not overly expressive at this stage; weighty and concentrated on the palate, highly structured with a firm backbone; no great aromatic development yet, still tightly wound and rather reticent, even on day two, with every sign this will continue to develop over the next 5-10 years. |

1989 Château CissacHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
7/3/2022 - SussexRH wrote: 84 pointsInitially very muted on the nose, but with a few hours’ air it opens to become quite approachable; leather, ground coffee, spice; still sturdy and well-structured, with decent lift; no great concentration or length, but remains pleasant enough albeit it needs drinking soon. |
White |
2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru MorgeotChardonnay more |
7/1/2022 - SussexRH wrote: 81 pointsDeep golden colour, quite stern on the nose initially; begins to open up after some air, with the merest suggestion of some fruit underneath the oxidation; tempted to leave it for 24 hours and see if something emerges — and there are signs that it might — but I think it’s safe to say this is over the hill. |

2014 Calera Pinot Noir Central Coastmore |
6/29/2022 - SussexRH Likes this wine: 88 pointsIntensely smoky and gamey on first opening, suggesting it’s well evolved, but quickly opens up to rich, bright, perfumed red fruit (cherry, strawberry), very recognisably Calera, still with enough acidity and a firm backbone to lend structure to the ripeness; still plenty of life in this and no hurry to drink up. |
