Thin, all acid with little fruit or earth to add any counterweight that might help this wine approach a semblance of balance. Day 2: a slight chalkiness on the midpalate and maybe a hint of cocoa nib, but still just the overwhelming sourness and still thinner than yesterday, just all stomach acid with a funky hint of a particularly meaty burp.

A rare miss from Kermit Lynch.

Like someone shoved an entire damp pine forest into a manure processing plant into a cranberry bog into an afrin bottle, and then messed with the dosing mechanism so the entire contents got sprayed up the nose on the first pull. Too much funk, too much barnyard, too much menthol, too much road tar, too much fruit, too much of everything -- with no finesse or elegance. Stylistically I historically haven't cared for too many California pinots, but this wine is so noxious it's managing the impressive feat of singlehandedly putting me off the entire genre. Honestly reminds me a bit of that Wagner family trash pinot, albeit with a more varietally-appropriate body.

lush and hedonistic without crossing the line into self-indulgent. dark, brooding fruit, menthol, and underbrush with enough finely-grained tannins to provide structure without feeling overly formal or inaccessible. this will probably last for a while, but i doubt it gets much better from here.

update: does not hold up on day 2.

Against my better judgement, I poured half a glass after opening up a bottle to cook with and it's much, much better than the first bottle: a bit of fruit on a thin palate with some metallic notes (though far less metallic than the first bottle) and some green herbs. Clumsy, unenjoyable tannins dominate a thankfully short finish. I'm upgrading it to wine I can have a glass with while I use the rest to cook.

have you ever left a tupperware of cut cantelope in the back of the fridge and then found it after two weeks? when the cantelope is mushy and sitting in a pool of liquid and still smells sweet but also a bit gross? this wine is that, with some crushed-up asprin added in for good measure.

fill level still high in neck, cork still pristine. this particular bottle was well past its prime, beyond raisiny and into metallic territory. paint thinner on the nose. the tannic structure was surprisingly intact, but the fruit and acid were too dead immediately upon opening to provide any balance or enjoyment, and went away nearly entirely after about 10 minutes of air. a disappointment, but not unexpected after nearly 30 years.

very much a food wine. light and floral on the nose with hints of raspberry and strawberry. coats the palate well with a strong mineral backbone and enough grip to stand up well to a beef ragu. length is a bit disappointing, but overall a very versatile and enjoyable wine.

qpr champ. unexpectedly ripe - if anything the blue-black fruits are a bit too ripe and new world-y, but the igneous minerality and interwoven tannins balance out the ripeness well to make this a very nice wine, if not the most aglianico aglianico. if you're searching for jerky and leather these aren't the droids you're looking for.

Day 1 - ripe but restrained, structured but wild. Nice plummy and blackberry notes with fine integrated tannins and a bit of earth, if a bit broad. In the neighborhood of some "premium" Napa cabs.

Day 2 - just a isoamyl acetate festival. Nothing enjoyable left. Don't let this one sit, folks. Was hoping some of the broadness with settle into a more precise and focused showing overnight, but it just doesn't have the stamina. Was planning to cellar - now planning to drink.

edit day 2: as it warmed it came a bit back into balance but never enough to shake the overwhelming isoamyl acetate. really out of whack, even warmed backed to room.

cost me all of $6 delivered so didn't really concentrate on tasting and making notes. initial sip had some clunkiness (volatility?) on the finish that blew off quickly - wine was much more balanced after only a few minutes. suddenly realized the bottle was gone, so it clearly couldn't have been ~bad~. bright acidity, tropical fruits, light oak (if it's too much oak, give it just a few minutes). unreal QPR.

chilled it down and the unruly tannins receded into better balance, at the expense of losing fruit vibrancy

as it warmed slightly in glass it showed the best version of itself, still a bit astringent and vegetal but reminiscent of chambord

a bit finicky, and not much payoff for finally getting it right

Incredibly poignant nose of stewed fruits and choward's violet, with green sage notes. Palate is exact opposite - thin, watery, and acidic. Disjointed and unrepresetative of the appellation - pass on this one. Only gets an 85 because the nose is so much fun (if but a deke).

Day 1: lacks focus and precision of benchmark Napa cabs. Balanced ripeness, with raspberry, cranberry, orange peel, cherry pit, and a hint of plum. Blue and black fruits noticeably absent. Mocha and a touch of sage underbrush. Hoping it's just in an awkward phase, but the tannins are already integrating nicely and I don't think it has the structure for the long haul. Worth 30usd. Not upset at 35usd. Would be hot pissed at 100usd.

Day 2: No improvement, though no decline either. Little evolution from Day 1, perhaps a bit more cocoa nib.

varietally correct. fruit profile and balance as expected for a budget garnatxa. juicy enough to fool the palate into an impression of a touch of rs with a mildly phenolic finish. great weekday drinker or house wine for grenache blanc fans. qpr is there - I plan to pick up a couple more bottles.
