Deep amber in colour with a wide rainy, translucent rim with decent legs.

Intense dried fruity tropical notes on the nose with dried candied apricots, crème burlee, honey, vanilla, pineapples, orange peels, and grapefruits.

Medium bodied with intense sweetness on the palate but quite balanced with the acidity. Creme burlee, a hint of smoke, vanilla, honey, candied apricots, ginger, and nutmeg. Lusciously sweet but not overly cloying with the acidity, this has a medium finish with the candied fruits lingering around.

Lovely.

My wife and I decided to share a .375 with a platter of leftovers from the weekend. The palate was blueberry, dark cherry, hints of tobacco and pecans which came out on the long smooth finish.

Based on my scores, this keeps getting better and better! Deep and creamy yet also seamless and elegant, with enough vanilla biscuit and toffee apple to make a delicious dessert wine, and a sense of easy poise that made it simply great to drink as well. Well-evolved in a soft, honeyed register, and without the aggressive marmalade or cloying spice often found on Sauternes of this age; if I were to be picky, I might observe that it was almost *too* well-balanced!

Dense and succulent with honeydew type freshness. Good weight here - this is rich and coats the entire palette nicely. Some hints on lemon tartness and acid make you want more.
Nice finish, longer than I’d expected and has than sweet honeydew / melon texture and memory to it. Finish is at least 30 seconds
Excellent

Beautiful ruby color of a mature wine. One of the best Brunello's that I have had. Good upon opening but needs some time to soften the tannins. Flavors of dark, mature cherries and raisins. Earthy, lingers on the palate. Should continue to age and improve.

Absolutely seemed corked at first, so musty was the nose, but patience was rewarded when that cleaned up to reveal - well, a fully mature, delicate, faded Pinot Noir. Notes of church pew and 'old wine' fruit; it tasted good and was nice to drink, but I couldn't quite get past the initial odour.

I've been opening up a few 2009 in the las few months and this was comparatively a disappointment.

Even after a 4 hour decant it was incredibly chewy and raw, but more concerning I didn't find any depth and luxury that suggests in another 10 years it will be a different experience, it simply had a rather tart blueberry taste with limited complexity compared to any other 2009 I have had so far.

I'll let the other 5 bottles sleep, maybe they surprise me.

Deep, dark garnet in color, almost opaque. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & blueberries with overtones of kirsch, garrigue & floral notes, dried Provençal herbs, earthy/dusty notes, spices, sandalwood, licorice, minty, minerals, pepper & a hint of cedar. Medium-full bodied with an excellent concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of sweet cherries, blackberries & dark plums with herbs, exotic spices, anise, pepper, mint, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging. An outstanding vintage from this producer & a "must buy" for any serious Chateauneuf lover. An indicative blend of Grenache (Grenache), Mourvedre (Monastrell), Syrah, Counoise & Cinsault.

Browner in colour, and seemed to have a touch of coffee on the nose too. Well-evolved, transparent and attractive, with a pleasing grip too, but increasingly overshadowed by the stellar 1996, which held up in the glass whilst the 1995 thinned a little and started to fall off. Score 92 for the end of the glass, maybe 93 for the beginning.

Still drinkable, but past peak by about 15 years. Muted fruit, but decent body and palate feel.

The cork was in surprisingly good shape.

PnP but better after 15 minutes of air. The color was a dark purple with some fading at the rim. A nice showing of this medium bodied wine that was dominated by dark red and some black fruits, along with some spice, earth notes and minerality. The acidity was balancing, and any tannins were integrated. Should continue to hold.

This smelled so good from the off, with a ravishing, well-integrated savoury nose. Crisp acidity and deep, almost beetrooty fruit dominated the midpalate, which also had a gamey side and finished long but slightly thin, with bitter orange. Refreshing and charismatic - in a great place, and my #3 (but the group's WOTL).

Such a fun orange. Big long taste that just keeps going. Not much on the nose. But massive flavour. Slight tongue coating that you get with orange, but mostly just big bold juicy.
I get orange savy and chard vibes for sure.

12.89% abv. 70% Fié Gris (aka Sauvignon Gris.)
EYE: very hell, pastel gold and green-silver.
NOSE: plump, ready to rupture with sweet musk-lemon; tangerine; tall grass and wildflower; bracing chalk-peppermint; brined rose.
MOUTH: pretty much a perfect drink. It glances across several beloved genres at their best. The pacing is like hydrated cucumber, green tea, lime tonic. An exotic loft of exotic orchard fruits (apricot, sumac, preserved lemon) are bound with detailed stitching of tidal pond and igneous rock. This here is as abundant as it is spontaneous an expression of smell and taste, with natural acidity meeting fluent ripeness. How to pair it with food? Can it be falsified by a dimly lit loin chop?—after a liquor-based aperitif? And if not, certainly it couldn't survive service of preciously molded cheese courses. Presumably. On that basis I am deducting four points.

One of the most obviously shut-down wines I've tried for the first 30 minutes or so, like watching a beautiful landscape through frosted glass; the nose in particular was clearly sound, but gave barely anything away. Happily it did loosen up, with icing sugar on the increasingly pretty, fruity nose and surprising elegance and crisp acidity on the palate. Overall, this felt much more grown-up than the first four reds, and the only one a way off peak. Score 93 for the final sips and sniffs.

Dark ruby in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of mature, ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of cigar box notes of tobacco & cedar, earthy/dusty, some floral notes, leather, anise, mint, spices & a slight hint of oak/vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums, spices, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 29 years of age it appears to be close to if not at its peak of development, so best enjoyed soon. Fill was at lower portion of neck well above the shoulder; cork was stained on lower 1/8 but otherwise intact upon opening.

Today's other Charmes was also really popular around the table. So much earthier and more evolved, as though it came from a very different era, although it did become increasingly suave and crowd-pleasing in the glass. A lovely green streak in a Loire Cab Franc register made it a delight with the food. Again, I think we caught this at a brilliant point in its evolution, and I'd drink any others within five years. So good! My #2 today, and the group's joint #2 too.

PnP, chilled. The color was a medium minus rosé. Notes of light red fruit and citrus on the nose. The medium to minus bodied palate showed strawberry, cherry and watermelon notes with lemon citrus and nicely juicy acidity (boosted by the Vermentino), but no overt sweetness. Not meant for long term aging.

Immediately apparent that this had that bit more heft and stature than the two 1ers, although the shared vintage and producer signature was even more striking. Wafts of airy red fruit on the nose, which became more complex in the glass and revealed layers of icing sugar, panacotta, strawberry coulis and rose - one of the best bouquets I've smelled in a while. Very clean on the palate, silky smooth and already approachable, but definite power and persistence too; you could absolutely keep this wine for years, but I find it hard to imagine it giving more pleasure if you did. My favourite wine today, and the group's joint #2.

Opening nose is alluring and rich with dark cherry and hints at more to come. Palate is a striking cherry note that feels immediately identifiable as BV (and can be noted in their base Napa cab as well), alongside cedar and baking spice. Decanted and with air nose gets a bit of umami character - mushroom, soy sauce, moss. With air the palate evolves to a generous mix of cedar, cherry, and sweet tobacco. Drinking very well, enjoyed this more than the previous bottle last year.
