From a single bottle purchased at retail. This was thin and unbalanced from a Coravin pour on day one but was open for business from Coravin on day two. (Was it me or the wine? Not sure.)

On day two, this showed very good concentration and balance and a bright beam of acidity and lots of slightly rustic but not unripe tannins that provided an old-school framework for the rich cloak of cassis, black cherry, red fruits, and leather that made up the nose and palate. There was just a touch of undergrowth starting to show.

If people are trying to drink this from PnP, I can see why they give it so little love. If I had scored this on day one, I would have given it an 83/100 at best, but today is a completely different story.

This is a solid wine—a bit of a rustic, old-school Saint-Estephe bruiser—but very solid. At the full retail price of $36 US this is a good buy, but at the sale price of $30, it’s a little gem. If you know of an age-worthy, classed Saint-Estephe with almost nine years under the cork that can be had for the same price as Potensac, please let me know. I’ve bought a half case. 13.5% ABV (very good/***/16/92)

My last bottle. It got a sound decanting. the cork was sound and there was a fair amount of sediment in the bottle. The wine smelled, looked, and tasted good immediately upon opening. it benefitted significantly from decanting. It had a great taste of mature, but rich fruit, and modest oak. A very nice, mature Bordeaux. Wish i had more.

Still drinking well. I usually do not like a wine with this much alcohol. But age and decanting controls it well. Good on the nose, good on the palate. Cherries, vanilla and raisins.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): We finished the tasting with this wine, paired with a poached pear with white wine and vanilla that Astrid had served. A thoughtful and creative host, she is. This Margaine is 93% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Noir. 32 grams of dosage, with 50% of the wine from 2020, and the rest from a perpetual of 2014-2019. Flavors of nectarine and pear, and Ramon made a comment that the fruit profile reminded him of Soursop. Had never heard of the fruit so we looked it up and a few at the table agreed. Jeff called the fruit 'sweet and sour' in tone. All good comments. I liked the wine overall, but the pairing via Astrid is what made it all work.

Second of two bought at retail. This was open for business from PnP, with well-concentrated, aging black cherry and cassis on the palate, along with some very elegant—and very Cantemerle-like—undergrowth, black truffle, and pipe tobacco on the nose. Great complexity and nuance here, as well as a long, lingering finish.

This was showing about an 80/20 primary-to-tertiary profile and had plenty of unresolved, ripe tannins left and miles to go before it slept. In terms of development, it was way ahead of bottles from my lot of the 2010 and much more satisfying right now. I need a case of this stuff. Even now, in its fifteenth year, it’s only about $55 US per bottle by the case. You’ve got to love the value Cantemerle brings to the table. I’ve not yet discovered its equal in this department. 13% ABV (great; distinctive/****/17/95)

Will improve for next 2-3 years.

Not my style, but perhaps ill keep next bottle a while longer so fruit is not as pronounced

I am unable to keep my hands off of these since it has evolved so nicely in the mere six months that I have been following. Profound bouquet, but in no way jammy or over-extracted. Just the right influence of tannins to smooth out the mouthfeel and the abv isn't even a consideration. I really like this. Still good with a 92

A Monday night pop and pour post Martinez Manhattan because why not? Paired with crab cake dinner. I was shocked by this bottle, despite my previous experiences. It tastes like the Cabernet Sauvignon equivalent of Andremily, Next of Kyn, and Sin Qua Non. Yes, that rich and powerful style. A pleasant surprise. Concentrated and huge. Ripe and full. Crème de cassis. Kirsch. A hint of cigar box. Chocolate. Salt. Banana. On day two: sweet then savory. Phenomenal wine; very impressive. To Kalon comes through once again; there is something about bloodlines. I am now motivated to open Detert, Opus One, or Overture. Or even another bottle of this because it is drinking so well right now! Note to self: pair this with Momofuku or dry rub ribeye.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): I look at Charlie Carne's notes and he had a couple of bad experiences with this wine. Charlie knows what he is doing, so there must be some bottle variation as the bottle I tasted last night was really good. Disgorged February 2021, so yet another bottle from last night with a lot of lees time. 50% Chard, 35% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier. No dose. Grapefruit, red apple and raspberry. There is spine here but the wine doesn't come across as austere--good structure still present is my point. Crisp impression, medium weight, lively. Many of the tasters at the table last night preferred the 2002 Bruno Michel Pauline Rose, which was paired next to this 2004 Tarlant. I liked them both but I really liked even more the way this Tarlant was showing.

I found the '20 BDV to be attractive, especially texturally, but not among the top vintages of this wine at least at this stage. Of recent years, the '16 BDV remains the benchmark vintage in my opinion.

On the nose, I found pure red berry fruit, blood orange peel, and red floral notes, a very primary expression at this stage full of fruit, with a bit of that exotic and high acid, orange peel / crunchy red fruit vibe that I also found in the '20 Vietti Castiglione - although the BDV has more depth. On the palate, I found the wine to be medium in body with great finesse, with very smooth tannins that are already firmly in the background. The wine features rich acidity, with crunchy red fruit, fresh citrus, spice, and a touch of red floral notes. This seems promising mostly because of the texture of the wine, with very smooth tannins coupled with a core of rich, high acid fruit. I worry a bit with some of the '20s I've tasted, this included, that there's a bit too much acidity relative to the sweetness of the fruit / depth of the wine - the wines are exceptionally bright / high toned and I wonder how this profile evolves with time.

I never wrote a TN on here for the '19 BDV - no surprise, but I have found the '19 to be much denser than the '20 and tighter, while also showing an entirely different fruit profile, much darker with more savory complexity. Of recent years, the '20 kind of reminds me of the '18, while noting that the '20 seems to have more depth and promise, but the '18 seemed more open on release. I've rated the '20 fairly low compared to past vintages of BDV - partly the wine, but also I've become a harsher grader with time I think.

Served at just above fridge temp, consumed over ~1 1/2 hours. A few bubbles released when the top was removed, but it wasn't frizzante. High acidity, citrusy and zesty, with some slightly green notes and a bit of something like tart strawberry. More like a sauv blanc than any rosé I can recall having. Not bad, but not what I was looking for when we opened it, so I didn't enjoy this as much as I might have (although my wife liked it).

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): This was the Pauline cuvee, FYI. Disgorged February 2018, so right around 15 years on the lees. 90% Chard, 10% Pinot Meunier. 6 gms of dosage. I thought this wine had much more Meunier than it actually has, given the fruit profile of watermelon and blood orange. Aroma of something herbal, with the table saying things like mint, thyme or rosemary. For me, it was also quite peachy. Lots of strawberry in the palate, which kinda confounds me as the wine is mostly Chardonnay. I guess the color did a biasing job on my own senses....it happens. There is a lot of freshness still here at 2 decades, and my notes say 'fresh cut fruit'. Really good.

Nice wine, though I expected a little more from the reviews below. Good cherry fruit, but a bit muted on the nose and somewhat flat on the palate. I guess I would put this in the good not great category with respect to other Barbera d'Asti. Can't complain too much for $16. I don't think one can beat Vietti's version - twice the wine for $4 more.

Slow oxed for 4 hours before double decanting it to serve. Beautiful nose with spice, brown sugar, darkish red fruit, violets and flowers. On the palate, it was ethereal, silky and smooth with weightless power. The 10 Bonnes Mares is a very complete wine.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): Also had to add this to the database, as I did the 2004. Trust I got this correct. Disgorged May 2023. We also had the 2004 millesime next to this 2016, and that wine saw about 15 years on the lees, just less time though on this 2016. The result is the 2016 is a fresher styled wine, with lively green apple, peach pit/stone fruit and kumquat. I liked both 2004 and 2016, but each for different reasons. The 2004 for its soft and more relaxed character, and the 2016 for the freshness.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): Had to add this to the database, I think I selected it correctly. Disgorged October 2020, 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chard. The time on lees here is longggg, around 15 years. White pepper aroma? This has a lemony core, with caramel apple, and some oak still seasoning the wine. Viet called one of the flavors as 'orange marmalade', which was a great descriptor. This is drinking well for a wine with some age on it.

Enjoyed this perhaps more than most of my D&R bottles. While they've all been very good, they often seemed on the pleasant, low-alc juicy, quality fresh fruit side. This one, now with 10 years on it, was showing some nice complexity and added weight, while still having that great juicy fruit. Very nice.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Astrid (Astrid's House): Damn if I missed that this was a CC wine. 100% Pinot Gris. I sensed the edges were softer but was in conversation and didn't even realize there was no CO2 present. Aroma 0f buttered pastry. Yellow apple, light wet stone, with lime flesh and some cool tartness. A few of those who were drinking this with me commented on the oak, too. Of note, Astrid also said this was a blend of 2015/2016, 50/50.

Tasted this alongside the same vintage of their Coteaux Champenois, and I preferred the bubbled version. Bready aroma, and what I wrote down as red fruited aroma, too. Drinking great, Nose has clean ripe purple and black bush fruit. Currants! Pencil with hints of dog paw. Nose leaning more low toned then high. Initial veil of freshness and lift quickly replaced by thick base notes of dark fruit and black soil. Palate entry is soft, creamy and rich, autumn leaves, remaining tannins are fully integrated helping to balance out the rounded fruit along with well judged acidity. Wine finishes dry with Oodles of salty minerality, crushed oyster shell and touch of sourness. Every third sip seems to bring the thought of something funky trying to emerge, “Brett-like” but, not. 89+

Amaro candied cherries, wild strawberry, licorice, slight rose, slight leathery/tarry earthy note. Lots of bright red fruit, very reminiscent of some angostura di amaro candied cherries I made for a dessert this last winter. Great herbaceous quality with some floral and earthy elements balancing it all out. High acidity, medium fine grained tannins, medium body, slight bit of sappy frizzante. Pretty good concentration, and a fairly long finish as well. Incredibly satisfying and thirst quenching. QPR is off the charts here, for $20/bottle, just get a case.

See prior note:
An old school Bordeaux rule of thumb, Chateaux’s would put better quality wine into larger format bottles. Melchoir opened at a wedding would have better juice in it then say an Imperial opened at a Birthday Party would in turn have better juice then say the everyday 750ml. Never gave it much credence in this modern age but, based off the Jeroboam enjoyed this weekend, it seems valid. From the 750’s enjoyed since release, Jeroboam just had more. Lost its violet note and some bright freshness but, this was replaced by a more grizzled red and black fruit profile, Density and stronger tannic charge. Dry fruited with well judged acidity. Not terribly complex but, for the price point well worth it. Took an hour after decant to wake up and there wasn’t one single speck of sediment thrown off in the bottle. Wines age surely had something to do with the flavor profile and aromatic but, it didn’t remind of past 750’s of this same vintage. Or maybe it was just the Zombie Cocktails consumed prior to dinner service. Lol, Purchased as futures and stored accordingly... Na zdrowie
