A nice, very balanced and Burgundian Chardonnay that could easily be mistaken as a riper year Macon from a good producer. Mostly neutral oak, lemon-lime and green apple fruit, with a decent breadth and richness. Steely and tasty.

First decent Chasselas I had in my life. Not as limpy and with RS as the off the mill ones. This Grand Cru has appropriate acidity - in the context of Chasselas of course. There is also lovely stone fruit, some green apples, herbs and minerals. Reminded me a bit of a GruVe.

**** We previously tried this wine four months ago in Paris under the label of Ludovic Courbis, the son. This time the bottle we tried had a Gerard Courbis label.

We let this wine sit for about two hours in the decanter prior to drinking. At first open, the tannins were extremely chewy, but after the decanter, the tannins faded away and the mouthfeel became quite silky. The wine was also quite reduced and needed a lot of air at the start.

The nose was a typical southern-sector Saint-Joseph - blackberry and cherry accompanied by some fresh, earthy notes. This was strong at 14.5% ABV and menthol immediately came to the forefront of the wine when tasting. Notes of gooseberry and unripe blueberries also appeared. The aftertaste was a little peppery.

This, however, is a classic vin de Mauves. Like Gripa's St-Jo, it's a deep and dark wine. Way too young right now, and the fruits are concealed yet identifiable. Most definitely a little more feral and rustic than Gripa; the wine gives a feeling that transports one to the middle of a horse stable perhaps.

This took a full hour of near continuous decantations to come around. Finally revealing aromas of eucalyptus, blackberry, toasty, new oak, cedar, culinary herb scents and red currants. Quite rich and full-bodied, loaded with sweet red cherries and currants, toasted oak, hot gravel and some brooding black fruits and soil. This has a corpulent frame supported on a scaffold of layered tannins and brisk acidity. This will benefit from another 2-3 years in the cellar to open and shed some tannin and should reach age 15+ in fine shape. 91

[Restaurant purchase] No detailed notes. Interestingly, I had the same wine in January this year but today it showed much, much better. Medium yellow with a slight haze. Medium+ intensity on the nose; reductive, almond, ripe, clearly some lee aging. A slight natural feel to it. Medium+ intensity, long finish. 94-95

Brilliant wine

Decanted for 30 minutes and a good addition . The arbitrage in absolute quality vs price is defined by this beautiful chateau. And we do mean absolute cause the wine is beautiful ( as is always in good years) irrespective of its prices. We joked it’s these random wine openings every now and then that remind us the beauty and greatness of classic Bordeaux. This a wine we have tried a few times in the last 15 years and much like last time in 2020 ( Papies 93) it excelled . Classic through and through from nose to tail and now is in a good secondary phase but the fruit is vibrant and very much present. A magnificent wine , easy 93 on its own merit , exceptional price to quality and this will perform easily for another 15yrs minimum. So happy we have more and easily will add if we see any flying around.

My previous note still stands. Natural cork. This is a pretty good Bordeaux, not amazing. Decent balance, silky tannins are nearly integrated, good fruit, long mineral and tobacco finish. I would say that this is in its drinking window.
I'm sure it could go longer, it still tastes like a young bordeaux, I'm just not sure if I'll like it more however. 1.5 years on since the last time I tried it and I wasn't wowed. It improved in the glass.

[Restaurant purchase] No detailed notes. A very interesting combination of both an intellectual wine with an elegant complexity and the enjoyment of easy drinkability. Medium+ intensity on the nose, but in a very elegant way, not in your face kinda way with some light fire stone, white peach, a bit of oxidative notes with marzipan. High acidity, very long finish. 93-94+

From 375. A kaleidoscope of explosive aromatics - high toned, earthy, black fruited, dusty road, and with some overt alcohol as well. Palate is likewise complex and shows real pedigree, with fruit that shifts from red to black and back, a mouthful of rocks and warm earth, Asian spice box, and a finish of grippy tannins that are very left bank Bordeaux-like. Despite the density of flavors and structure, there’s real restraint and the wine is very more-ish and dare I say gulpable.

VDP logo on what feels and looks like a premium 5cm long cork. Medium yellow, but not the brightest. Takes some time to open-up, revealing, after about an hour, some grilled peanut notes mixed with pineapple. But, not as forward apropos of both these characteristics as the same label in the 2005 vintage. Some soy here as well. The palate didn't impress for the 1st hour, but it develop thereafter. Although the alcohol is lower by 1.5 % points to 12.5 compared to the 2005 version, the wine feels harsh, acidic and simple in the mouth, especially as it is a VDP Otswein. Good, but joyless. Day 2, with two small pours remaining in the bottle: better than on the 1st day, not as raw and challenging, but showing an earthier side, with spicy pineapple notes on the nose and having a rounder feel in the pungent, more open and concentrated mouth. Between very good and very good plus on the 2nd day, it would greatly benefit by decanting. Should hold well for at least three years.

89 on day 1, 91 on day 2. At first it was angular and super floral, with plenty of red fruit. Just a little out of sorts.

Day 2 it pulled together. Rose petal and cherries on the nose. A little stemmy. On the palate, raspberries and cranberries, slate, red apple skin.

Based on day 2, this could use some time sideways, but probably isn’t a super long ager.

Aroma of sweet stone fruit (peach, apricot); a few exotic aromas; slightly smoky-tobacco and wet stone; very nice nose!

Very juicy and fruity on the palate with a clearly sweet core; some caramel; lots of melting and creaminess; beautiful light minerality; then comes a very lively, lemony acidity that is not particularly well integrated; some grip from the tannins at the end; medium-long finish.

The wine lacks some of the depth and complexity that I expect from a Grosses Gewächs.

Dark and brooding, the nose displays a deep core of dried fruits and spice. Dense and intense on the palate, with game, iron and dried red fruits, backed by a tannic backbone. Very complex and structured. Long persistence in the mouth. This still needs time.

Sunshine in a bottle. Crazy high-toned aromatics of rose hip jam and candied flowers lead to super bright acidity that saturates every corner of the mouth. Diving under the waves of acidity, one finds pure strawberry Grenache fruit firsf, which quickly rounds the red fruit bases around to crancherry, pomegranate and raspberry. Lemon-like sprite that morphs into lime custard. Shares a kinship with the Mind Left Body in the Chardonnay-influenced body. Svelte form, wiry structure and less overt chalk/minerals than MLB.

PnP. Even better than the last bottle. No hurry to open. Aromas of citrus, lemon, pear, minerals and minimal oak. Similar flavors showing the lemon, citrus, pear, lots of minerality. good acidity leading to a long finish. Minimal oak presence. Very good now, but may improve with more time. No signs of decline.

Leaking at bottom of capsule, but level still good. Neck of bottle still wet after capsule removed. Full bright yellow colour. The dried apple, quince and peach nose also has floral notes. At 2 hours wax and orange citrus emerge, becoming more waxy with each glass. Lots going on here. Lovely slender palate with ample, but nicely restrained yellow fruit, becoming slightly creamy after a couple of hours. As it warms, the creaminess takes on the little orange citrus note too. Quite lovely and close to fine.

Texture is surprisingly Chardonnay like, but thrumming with classic explosive Hardy Mourvedre aromatics. Crunchy cran-crabapple, overtones of pine sap and dried herbs, and a hint of mystery funk that almost verges on cannabis. Strike that, yes, it is cannabis. Lol. Cosmic cranberry pot gummy, 100%. A seam of chalky minerals that gives a glimpse of the otherwise well hidden structure. This is Yang to the Family Band’s Yin.

Just a small taste. I'll defer to Joe's notes as I had packed it in at that point. But this was impressive, much more balanced than I expected. Sure, it is a big wine, lot of dark fruits here, but they are not over done; and there's a load of complexity now to really enhance this and make it classy and interesting. Great to get to try this.

Opened and paired with cajun salmon cake, pasta salad, and mixed spinach salad. Did not decant but will next time. Purple-crimson color with a violet hue. The restrained nose brings hints of potpourri, red roses, lilac, and spearmint. The palate is medium-full, square, and compact, bringing a hard core of black and blue fruit mixed with Earl Grey tea, soy, and subtle wood smoke notes into a tannic finish. Though this is still young, it's remarkably fresh and drinkable considering the vintage. Drink 2026-2034. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 90.
