51% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 9% Pinot Meunier. Serious and ambitiously priced of course. At or above the 2010 which is still widely available. 2013 a very even year in terms of weather and a late harvest. This likely to be long lived and is clearly very young. The NV, Blanc de Blancs and Cuvee Cherie are all exemplary and punch at or above their weight with champagne or other great sparkling wines of the world in similar price brackets. For me, alas this doesn't.

Lots of spice and a nice fleshy texture. Molasses, graham cracker, tobacco, toasty old (?) oak; fig, blackberry; menthol. Missing some acid and was at times a bit hot. Didn't really impress.

Forward while plum and white peach. Palate is silky yet intense leading to a moderately long balanced finish. This is not a showy wine but hits all the spots just the way it should. No sign of this one coming to an end.

Wonderful showing. Perfume of red berries, spices, earth. Silky texture, no hard edges, elegant and refined fruit. The fruit is in the darker end of the spectrum and there’s a spicy touch. Understated power, balance and harmony. Early days, but as so many 2017s, absolutely delicious right now. €90 on the list. Yes, please. Lunch in Mersault with Per.

From a magnum at a Nyetimber tasting. Directly following the new releases of the 1086 by Nyttimber both white and rose (see notes), so rather in their shadow in terms of refinement (though at around 25% of the cost). The last vintage classic cuvee before becoming NV only. Last tasted in July 2016 from bottle and as then I don't think this is the best vintage of the Classic Cuvee. 88 as before.

Had some a few weeks ago for my birthday from Coravin and finished off the bottle this eve. It’s really lovely - a bit more developed in colour and depth since the last bottle we opened 18 months ago. I think it’s prob in a bit of an in between phase. I love young sweet wine and old sweet wine - I think this probably is just somewhere a bit too in the middle at the moment, if that makes sense

Austere and a bit awkward at present. Opened up with 2 hours of air and much better with food. More time needed? The primary fruit was faded and I couldn't detect much to make up for it.

A surprising amount of detail on the cepage for a wine from the late 90s - 70% Auxerrois (a synonym for Malbec in Cahors), 25% Merlot, 5% Tannat. At 25 years this is still full coloured without too much bricking at the rim. Purchased from the property and well stored since. Significant sediment despite three days of standing and careful decanting. Attractively well preserved and will last.

Dark crimson in color. 14.3% ABV. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, cloves, sarsaparilla and forest floor. Medium body with perfect acidity. Rich, restrained and earthy with impeccable balance. Black cherry, pomegranate, roasted herbs and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Stunning Pinot Noir that presents with a Burgundian flair. Best over the next several years.

I've always found this rose to be uninteresting, but my wife has enjoyed it in the past. For this vintage, the wife agreed with me that there's hardly anything to it, it is similar to drinking lightly flavored water. Perhaps it is getting old.

Tasting Note 21 of #50in2024

"Highest Beauty" aka To Kalon

It's been two years since I lasted tasted this 2014 AO Beckstoffer to Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon. It again blew me away...

The color of the wine is deep and dark with some ruby on the rim -- which implies this could age much longer! Initial swirls reveal legs hanging on to the glass for dear life (14+ % alcohol)

The nose took some time to develop in the glass -- 30-45 minutes minimum - and revealed dried flowers, deep dark fruit and a bit of spiciness. The nose is big, the kind you can just keep swirling and smelling. Its heaven.

Initial sip revealed low acid and solid tannins for a nice balance. Tones of leather, coffee and DEFINITELY dark chocolate for me! The spiciness of the nose continued on the tongue but not peppery more like baking spices. There's nothing sweet about this wine...its big, bold and beautiful. I find this BIG big - even for a Napa cab. The finish resolves to a tannic fruitiness to a welcomed linger. With time, each sip seems to get better.

This is a wine that makes a statement...A Napa Valley expression of cab that leaves no doubt where its from. It is exactly what it is supposed to be. Wonderful.

I tasted this while preparing Mexican Chicken and rice bowls for dinner -- NOT the pairing I would recommend as its boldness competes with the Mexican flavors and heat.

If you want to make statement and/or enjoy the boldest and one of the best cabernet sauvignon single vineyard wines from Napa -- this is it.

Going to Napa in couple weeks and will buy more!!

Great wine. Paired with a flank steak with a drizzle of chimichurri sauce. This Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with huge scents of black currants, black cherries and some hints of dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. Like I said...great wine!! cheers

This is young but already drinking well. Nose of dark fruit, caramel and garrigue. There's a note of Luden's cherry on the palate as well. Fine, light tannin suggesting 5-6 years of longevity.

Intense, perfumed nose of sous-bois and poached dark fruit, a touch of cherry liquor, maybe a bit of VA. In the mouth, this was medium to light bodied with finely grained, but slightly firm tannins, medium concentration. Very good length. Drank over three days, I actually preferred how it showed day 2 and 3. Overall very nice, though it gave me the impression of being a bit too polished (for lack of a better expression). Drinking very well. I would not keep much longer.

Forward black cherry and raspberry with touch of earth. Intense, perfectly balanced juice, fruit driven palate, moderate finish. Extremely pure and enjoyable juice with just a touch of minerality. To my palate, this is so different from most burgundies I drink. Not sure how this will age, but so far, I am a fan.

13% alcohol. Very good cork with barely 2mm of wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. The colour is dark with minimal signs of ageing.
The nose is an interesting mix with tertiary notes of leather, ink and confectionery allied to a fresh and vigorous frame evoking stems (in a good way) and menthol. The mouth is consistent with the nose, with freshness and structure ahead of opulence, although the tannins are largely resolved.
A vg Pauillac, but probably not one for hedonists, as RP used to say; plenty of grip here.
Yet another highly successful 2002 from Northern Médoc.

Deep dark Syrah, quite dense and gritty, but also with a sheen of vanilla oak that seems out of place next to what was quite a rustic structure this evening. Pretty damn delicious though, so easy to drink.

This wine needs to be near room temperature to show. Deep yellow. Gooseberry, lemon rind, orange blossoms and stones on the nose, quite forward. Palate is powerful, from the first sip to the finish, the white plum and lemon want your attention. Balanced and long finish. I think I like this one. May warrant a higher score if it settles down a little.

a lot of dark red fruit, a hint of oak (surely not "overoaked"), juicy attack, medium body, nice acidity and smooth tannins. the wine has more the personalty of "burgundy" (in a positive way). Almost "easy drinking" on a elegant and high level, one can start to enjoy it already ...

The flavors are there but it's definitely on it's way down. There is almost no smell but even the taste has faded significantly. This was our first time trying this blend from CM and it was a bit disappointing. The CM White 1999 was perhaps the best white we have ever had together.

Textured and supple on the palate, which is brought out more with time and not being served too cold.

100% Chardonnay from the 2021 harvest, fermented and vinified in 300 liter oak barrels. Disgorged 16 November 2023 with 4 g/l dosage and just 2,120 bottles made.

Really impressive concentration, structure and depth in this champagne - the barrel is just used so well and perfectly integrated.

On the nose it's quite tight and feels extremely young, but there's some lovely notes of lime, lime zest, white peach, brioche, oak, cold butter and chalk.

The palate is where the concentration and depth really shines with lemon, lime, green apple, grapefruit, oak, toasted brioche, churned butter, chalky minerals and some unripe tropical fruits.
Towards the finish the acidity gets a bit too overwhelming for me with a very green and unripe feel and pure lime juice. It really deserves more time for the dosage and acidity to integrate better, but with 2-3 years of bottle ages I think this will start to show perfectly.
White - Off-dry
Keeps getting better and better. The nose of tropical fruit is explosive and acidity perfectly balances the sweetness.
