Seemingly better than my previous taste 5 years ago. Sangiovese bite with some merlot richness. Nice structure and great with lamb and roasted vegetables.

PnP, vg showing. I wasn't planning on opening my final bottle, but a guest stopped by and was curious, so here we are. Fully mature with decent freshness, drink now. Rather elegant, the lightest touch of dusty savory. The core of fruit is fading, it's more tertiary than anything. 13,5%., drink in the next several years based on the last two bottles. The 01s are still showing rather young and snappy.

Let’s just get the obvious out of the way: yes, it’s THAT Lamborghini. After Ferruccio retired from building cars and tractors, he bought the La Fiorita estate in Umbria and he took up winemaking. I’ve had the good fortune to enjoy a few different vintages of “Campoleone”, their most serious wine, over the years but it’s often a bit of a challenge to find in the middle of the US. It’s traditionally a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot and labeled as an IGT. I had two bottles of the 2001 vintage in my cellar and decided to open one because, why not? As luck would have it, the first one was corked. Might as well open the second! That’s more like it!

Popped and poured a small glass for myself. The 2001 “Campoleone” pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core moving out towards an orange rim; medium+ viscosity with light staining of the tears. Some faint signs of sediment too. On the nose, it seemed a bit reticent so I took Tim Heaton’s lead, based off his fabulous note from back in 2017. Into the decanter it went while I prepared dinner. I ended up leaving about 2oz in the bottle as it was full of sediment; almost a muddy sludge. After about 90 minutes, the nose came alive!

Developing still, after 23 years! Beautiful notes of plums, brambles, purple flowers, leather, tobacco, green herbs and spice drawer. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins (though well integrated at this stage) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long, dry and zippy. What a tasty treat and I can’t underscore how youthful this seemed! Based off this experience, well-stored examples are drinking well now with a 1-2 hour decant or enjoy through 2031 with ease.

PnP. I've had two in the past year with consistent results: it's time to drink up. I'm really happy to have opened when I did because, while fully mature, there's still (just) enough freshness to keep this elegant and enjoyable. It needed 30 minutes to fully open, and once it did, it slowly faded over the following two hours (in bottle, not aerated to decanter). Some beautiful tertiary with a few strokes of charming secondary notes, too. A goodly amount of sediment, as expected. DRINK NOW. recommended

PnP. My third of four, and this particular one, while managing good freshness for its age, proved a good reminder to drink my final bottle sooner than later. Mostly tertiary at this point, with soil, red and dark berry, and forest notes. Medium-bodied, fine, round tannins, avg+ length and decent complexity. Now and the next several years, if this one is representative. 13,5% abv. recommended

Drinking well, this bottle didn't quite have as expressive a nose as a bottle a couple/few years ago...smooth, pleasant, adequate structure. I don't see this improving from here

My final bottle of this vintage. Part of a pasta and pizza Sangiovese night with my wine group. No formal notes. But as a Merlot/Sangiovese blend, it seemed heavier (or more full bodied) than the all Sangiovese wines.

Still retains deep purple color-no brick. The nose was somewhat disappointing with only a hint of dark fruit. The palate was better with notes of tobacco and licorice and toasted oak. At the end of it's prime drinking interval.

My first btl i am actually drinking of this having given 3 of them away over the years. Very lovely polished and unique Tuscan wine. The sangio/merlot blend works here and both varietals show their best characteristics, and really seem to play off each other. There is nice tart sangio bing cherry to balance out the rounder plummy merlot. Tons of mineral (iron) and forest floor notes. My one critique is the wood seems a a bit heavy handed here, and this is overall quite internationally styled (as I expected). This is starting to dry out and should be drunk up in short order. Needs food, but drinking it solo at the moment.

Needed a 30 min decant to open up. Well balanced wine that’s medium bodied with a decent finish. Certainly in its prime. This was as good or slightly better than the 01. This will drink well for another 3-5 years.

Probably my last bottle. Chapeau to Bob for putting this wine onto the radar of the international wine community. While I struggle with Bob’s credo of bigger is better towards the end of his career, this was just a great find 20 years ago. Still a fairy dark garnet, no signs of oxidization which I find remarkable for a Sangiovese / Merlot blend, this is showing a great balance of those two grapes that are fairly rarely combined. Well delineated fruit, integrated tannins and good length. Still in a great spot - drink now

Easily 20 years old and still showing a liveliness and pep. Nice dark fruit and smoky notes, and it's really spicy on the finish; that continues right through to the finish where is develops a spicy-mocha-like linger. It's still quite alive and well, sure there are elements of dried cherry and dried fruit languishing in there, but they add to the enjoyment of this wine.

Coravin pour. Opaque dark garnet. Nose is initially very black cherry and chocolate dominant with an undertone of dried fruit. Dense, quite tannic and muscular, angular and acidic. Palate has prunes, cherry, baking spices and a bitter edge to the finish. Probably needs more time to round out the rough edges. Needs food at this point and something fatty or rich most likely.

First bottle from an OC. Poured into decanter and drank over 1h or so. Followed a 05 Lagrange and this held it’s own. Still a dark garnet in the glass with no bricking. Round given the Merlot in the blend but with beautiful freshness and acidity from the Sangiovese. Have had a quite a few of the 99s over the years and some were starting to turn oxidative but that does not seem to be an issue here. Nicely integrated tannins and medium length. Excellent and does not show what I understand was a hot vintage in Umbria
This is in my eyes Northern Italy’s most underestimated and under appreciated wine - don’t quite understand why...

Very good. Cork soaked half way, great fill; med/dark ruby color shows minimal bricking. Very powerful nose (PnP), with slightly more secondary than tertiary at this point. (bright) Aromas of soil/place, some sappy cherry, red currant, loam, tobacco, etc. The palate is med+ bodied, with exceptional balance, a silky mouthfeel and notable length. A glass with 2,5oz found the next morning on the table showed no signs of oxidation, and only required a few swirls to find its freshness, and fruity voice. Brilliant stuff that should drink at this high level for another 3-5 years depending on your cellar conditions. Natural cork. highly recommended

Cork soaked 3/4 way up, but removed in a single piece. A dark purplish ruby in the glass, exhibiting long, languid legs. Color pretty good still, with maybe a touch of bricking to the edges. Nose features garrigue bordering on brett, mushroom, forest floor, and a camphoraceous note. Needs to warm up from 57-degree cellar temperature.

The pizza has arrived. This wine is every bit the equal of the somewhat spicy pizza; stands up to it just fine, the garrigue receding into the background. We are left with a medium+ bodied wine with good+ intensity and concentration, ample acidity, and with dark cherry, plum, forest floor and a touch of camphor. Very nice and one bottle left!

PnP and consumed over two nights. This had a gorgeous, floral nose on initial pour and a nice fullness on the palate. Drank well the first evening it was open but fell off sharply on Day 2, becoming disjointed and flat. Definitely time to drink up, but doesn't disappoint at all.

last bottle of meny (2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006). It seems this wine is no more produced, unfortunately. Year after year the bright color dims into brown reflections and the nose gets hints of stable, wet leaves and leather, palate being consistent with some graphite and undebrush. Somehow austere but with great stuff. At the end of its best drinking window. Sad farewell to Campoleone....

2013 Lamborghini Campoleone was developing, supple and well-balanced. The Umbria Merlot-Sangiovese blend was clear and medium ruby in colour with light brick rim and no sediment. On the nose, there were aromas of dark plum, ripe dark cherries and smoke, followed by smoke, milk chocolate and ceder wood. The mouthfeel was dry and rather full-bodied, with medium levels of supple tannin and balanced acidity. Flavours of blackberries, Christmas cake, wet stone, tobacco and Pu'er black tea lingered in a long earthy finish. The wine was composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Sangiovese.

Brought it to Ted's for an "New Jersey" themed dinner in VA

A little tight until food came out. With the food (NY/NJ style Italian American "red sauce") it improved quite a bit. Red fruits, dried tomato leaf, tobacco. Some nice oak influence. But it really does need food.

The eponymous 1997 is an elegant package, classic claret features, cherries, cedar, salty licorice, a beauty which clearly surpassed the other Lamborghinis in the vertical, one of the best vines in a very long time, as good as they say and worth the high price, stunningly good.
