Introduction

Tomas last tasting event for our wine association before heading home. The theme was of course Burgundy PC and GC.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White
2002 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
92 points
Deeply golden color.
Oxidized, reminiscent of mature champagne aromas, caramel fudge, mushroom.
On the palate it surprises by not being so far gone as the nose would suggest. Full bodied, very good acidity and still fresh fruit. My favorite of the whites this evening.

White
2006 Marché aux Vins Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
90 points
Golden color.
Spicy oak aromas on the nose and on the palate. Good weight and acidity. However, the oak needs a further 3 years to integrate and let the fruit show.
White
2005 Olivier Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
91 points
Lightly yellow color.
An immediate attack of heavy minerals (to my liking) mixed with an oakiness that reminds me of another continent. Heavier on the palate than expected. It evolved well during the evening. To sum up, excellent minerals and pedigree but poor handling of the oak for my taste. Leave it another 3-5 years and it ought to pick up another 2-3 points.

Flight 2 (9 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
90 points
Lightly red.
Sweet red fruit on the nose.
High acidity, some raspberry and liquorice, some tannins still, a bit young still. Excellent balance!
Red
1994 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
flawed
Dark red color with brick edges.
Nose suggests some faults.
Something has gone very wrong with the wine/vinification. Extremely high acidity, totally off balance and undrinkable.
Red
1999 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru
90 points
Dark red, some brick on the edges.
A bit marmelady and minty but with a nice "blueberry" acidity.
Very pleasant, had be fooled for an Aussie wine.
Red
2007 Nicolas Potel Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
Medium/light red.
Very aromatic PN rosy scents with concentration and healthy acidity and round fruit. Actually approachable at this stage but with a good acidity that will easily take it another 5 years. Should be easy to match with good food.
Red
2000 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
92 points
Deeply concentrated color with brick edges.
A bit shy initially with a milky scent.
On the palate, very dark fruit, still very elegant with a good balance acidity/fruit right now. Very good.
Red
2000 Dominique Laurent Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Concentrated color with brick edges.
Nose dominated by lovely sweet fruit.
Heavy fruit with typical rose scent. Good, high acidity. Give it another 2-3 years.
Red
2003 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru
92 points
Very concentrated with elegant cherry, almost kirsch, and almond flavors. Quite some acidity and tannins left. Save it another 3-5 years.
Red
1999 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Maréchaudes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
94 points
Very complex flavors. Chocolate and nice maturity aromas, slightly reminiscent of truly great Riojas. Perfectly balanced which renders it ready to drink, although I would expect it to improve another 5-8 years.
Red
1989 Domaine Launay Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
A distinctly noble scent. Truffles. Very elegant fruit with good acidity and some tannins left. It will easily last another 5 years.
