Introduction
This was the main event of night 2. The table speaks for itself, the theme was Chave and we put together a great vertical.
Flight 1 - Chaves (11 notes)
We did these in reverse order. The older Chaves needed air and this was the best way to make sure everything showed well. There were pauses in here with all of the riesling and bubbly flying round.
Taste: Full bodied with youthful tannins and medium+ acidity. There is very good balance and depth to the tones of black pepper, roasted meats, black cherries, and leather tones.
Overall: This is a really good young Chave. There is a real nice dark red fruit core to it with an expected youthful quality to the tones.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. Very youthful with stylish and deep tones of violets, dark red cherries, black fruits, and some meaty tones.
Overall: This is just a baby. While it's really good right now, it is just barely showing what it can do. There is a great wine that is waiting to come out, but with more time.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. There is real good intensity to the deep tones of black cherries, roasted meats, incense, black pepper, leather, and some spice tones.
Overall: This was gorgeous. There was a good dark red fruit core with a good raw power to it as well. It's pretty open right now and was showing great.
Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and nice supporting tannins. There is nice youth to the tones of black pepper, black cherries, leather, violets, black cherries, and some roasted meats.
Overall: This is a gorgeous and elegant Chave. While there is youth to it, it is also very open to drink right now too.
Taste Full bodied with medium+ acidity and some youthful tannins. This is deep and layered with great tones of roasted meats, black cherries, black pepper, earth, and black olives.
Overall: While this was drinking great, it feels like it can get better. This was a special wine and one of the better Chaves on display.
Taste: The medium/full feel is very polished with nice medium+ acidity as well. There are some tannins, but they are more in a supporting role along with tones of black pepper, roasted meats, dark red cherries, and some wild game tones with a touch of olives on the back end.
Overall: This is just lacking some of the depth that exists in the other Chaves. Still, it's a lovely Chave that plays more towards the burgundian side as opposed to raw power.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The feel is very refined and sexy with a feminine take to the tones of violets, roasted meats, dark red cherries, earth, some leather, and black olives.
Overall: This was absolutely gorgeous. This needed the air it received as it kept unraveling in the glass. This was the definition of poise and class with a real savory take to it as well.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and silky tannins. The feel is lovely and refined with pretty tones of violets, roses, black cherries, roasted meats, and some black olives.
Overall: The only difference between this and the past two times I've had it is that I wasn't able to spend as much time with it. This is a gorgeous Chave that demands your attention as it plays more towards nuance as opposed to power.
Taste: Full bodied with a richness to it, but well balanced as well. There is very nice depth with flowing tones of hot wax, red apples, lanolin, honey, peaches, and hot oils.
Overall: This is a wonderful Chave blanc. It comes off as mature, but still with a ways to go. There's a lot of class and richness to it with really good balance.
Taste: Full bodied with nice medium acidity. There is a layered quality to the tones of white peaches, oils, hot wax, red apples, and some nectarines.
Overall: This was a really good young Chave blanc. It definitely needs some time to fully come together, but it's hard not to enjoy it a lot right now.
Flight 2 - Other wines (13 notes)
Darn, there was a lot of riesling. All of the Huet being passed around was another beautiful thing. That turned into one of my bigger revelations the entire weekend.
Taste: Light bodied with refreshing medium+ acidity. The feel is very smooth and polished with lovely tones of green apples, quince, white florals and peach tones.
Overall: This was a real lovely donnhoff. There was still a freshness to the tones while it seems like it's working towards maturity.
Taste: Light bodied with medium/high acidity that is very crisp. The structure is still showing along with polished and succulent tones of peaches, minerals, nectarines, some honey, and white fruits.
Overall: This was really classy. It still feels like it has a long way to go and there was a freshness to the tones as well. It is very well balanced with nice depth too.
Taste: Light bodied with high acidity. The acidity is a bit screeching and is very imposing right now. Even with the really big structure on this, there are fresh tones of white fruits, mineral tones, cherries, and peaches.
Overall: This was from magnum and was insanely young. This can be an absolutely killer donnhoff with time, but it's really good right now.
Taste: Light bodied with noticeable high acidity. The structure is very imposing right now and is covering up the tones of white fruits, apricots, white peaches, and acacia flowers.
Overall: This is insanely young. There is some great materials here, but it just wasn't wanting to fully show.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with zippy medium/high acidity. There is a refined quality to the layered tones of brioche, creamed white fruits, honeycomb, red apples, and pears.
Overall: This is starting to become mature, but it also has some really good acidity behind it as well.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. Very finessed, polished, and rich with extremely balanced and deep tones of brioche, roasted nuts, flint, warm honey, and nectarines.
Overall: This was a wonderful champagne. While there is a richer quality to it, it really has a lot of finesse and class.
Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity. This is very well balanced with excellent depth and tones of red and green apples, sweet peaches, caramel, and some floral tones.
Overall: This seemed ageless. Yes, it's mature, but there was still a freshness to it along with the maturity. This demanded more attention that the situation just couldn't give.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. The structure is very youthful with gorgeous tones of nectarines, sweet peaches, apricots, and quince tones with some white fruits.
Overall: This was absolutely rocking. It still has a good ways to go, but it is really good right now.
Taste: Fuller bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity was pretty noticeable and the tones of lemon curds, apples, peaches, honey, and some real nice mineral tones as well.
Overall: This bottle wasn't showing as much as previous bottles. It was more the timing I caught it on as I had a quick taste the next day and it was gorgeous.
Taste: Full bodied with a real fatness to the feel along with high acidity. The acidity is very tart and noticeable with tones of apples, sweet peaches, lanolin, and white fruits with some white florals.
Overall: This is extremely young still. The nose just made me feel like it was springtime out with a real nice fresh quality as well.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel is like satin with deep and succulent tones of apricots, nectarines, honey, and loads of peaches.
Overall: This was just barely revving it's engines when I finished my pour. This was from a full bottle and it has all sorts of time to keep improving from an already great base.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity. The acidity is very sharp and shows off the youth with fresh tones of white peaches, pears, white florals, apples, and some figs.
Overall: This is painfully young. There feels like a really good Prum that just needs a good amount of time to fully show itself.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel is very silky with layered and deep tones of peaches, honeysuckle, white fruits, and some egg tones.
Overall: This was a beauty. Fully mature and in no danger of going anywhere for a while.
Closing
This night was a complete blur. Wines were being opened left and right with more pours than I could handle. These were just the wines that I was able to get notes down on. What a way to finish off the second night of Bearserkerfest.
