The Twelveth Annual Stonefields Dinner

Guelph, ON

Tasted November 30, 2013 by Wine Canuck with 770 views

Introduction

This was such a fantastic evening and was the first I had the pleasure of being involved with. Coming from a very old-world centric palate a few wines were centered more on prominent dark fruit than I usually care for but several others were truly outstanding. Thanks to our gracious host and all the other volunteers who make this happen every year.

Flight 1 (27 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine Chandon (Australia) Brut Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
88 points
Bubbles pour a tad coarse on this entry level bubbly. Nose shows toast, melon, citrus, butter and wet stones. Overall is fairly subtle. Mouthfeel leans toward round and buttery. Finish is moderate in length.
White - Sparkling
2007 Jansz Wine Company Vintage Cuvée Australia, Tasmania
93 points
I really liked this but you better like things in the super rich and very oaky style. Nose blasts massive amounts of caramel, salted toffee and butterscotch. Repeats similarly on the palate with abundant richness, and a distinct coffee note, but with a great backbone of acid as well. Finish is quite long.
Rosé - Sparkling
2007 Nyetimber Rosé United Kingdom, England, Sussex, West Sussex
89 points
Nose was quite mute in this bottle with interesting earthy tones. Palate has more life with cranberries, raspberries, and lots of acid. Finish seemed to be a bit on the short side on this night.
White
1969 Chateau Musar Blanc Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
91 points
Very heavily oxidative. Nose of bread crust, dried lemon peel, toasted mixed nuts, dirt, and old lacquered wood. Palate retains good acid on a reasonably long finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1800 Joubert Family Wine Muscat of Alexandria Jaubert South Africa
100 points
One of the most mind-blowing wines I will taste in my lifetime. It is so wildly complex it is unbelievable. Apparently the Joubert family tucked away a cask of the 1800 vintage of their legendary sweet wine that was apparently in the same league as Tokajis and Yquem at the time . The cask was left in storage and somewhere in the vicinity of 20 years ago the family began to draw out wine, replacing it with Klein Constantia. Because so little is drawn out each year this is sill predominantly from 1800. The nose is drop dead gorgeous with Christmas cake, nuts, a kaleidoscope of spices, cardamom, bread pudding, chai tea, preserved grapefruit, coriander (leaf and seed), cumin, pine resin, and spearmint. The finish is the longest I have ever experienced of any wine, ever. I was still tasting nuance in my small sample 15 minutes later. Amazing.

White
2008 Sadie Family Palladius South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland, Malmesbury
91 points
Very floral with notes of honey, wool, oak spice, mineral. Palate is fairly sweet with good acid. Finish is fairly long on honey and wool. Not really getting any of the 14.5% alcohol on the nose but caught a little on the back end of the palate.
White
2011 Alheit Vineyards Cartology Bushvines South Africa, Western Cape
91 points
What I found interesting on this wine was that despite it only being 8% or so semillion I felt it really was a notable element adding an almost petrol , oily, machine shop note to the wine. The Chenin add the typical honey, floral, citrus and melon. Very acidic and somewhat linear palate but finish is fairly lengthy.

White
1996 Marcassin Chardonnay Marcassin Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
92 points
Nose is powerful and shows fresh chopped hazelnuts, toast, cream, pineapple, and other tropical fruit. Palate enters with a sweet impression and turns back to tropical fruit on the finish of oak, pineapple, and a bit of alcoholic heat.
White
1998 13th Street Chardonnay Temkin-Paskus Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Beamsville Bench VQA
91 points
This has held up very well. More lean in fruit profile, but still quite noted oak. Some green elements are present on the nose of green apple, mineral, citrus and baking spices. Palate again leaves a slightly sweet impression on the fairly lengthy finish carried on oak and mineral.
White
2009 Bodega Catena Zapata Chardonnay White Bones Adrianna Vineyard Gualtallary Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, Gualtallary
91 points
This too is in the more reserved/lean style with fruit solidly in the orchard spectrum with notes of pear and apple. Lots of acid and finish again is fairly lengthy with good proportion of mineral. Less oak noted at this point than the 13th street it was served with, but some oak aging is apparent.
White - Sparkling
2003 Domaine Chandon Étoile Tête de Cuvée USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma
89 points
Very lean nose of steel, green apple and yeast. Palate is typical and a touch sour.
White - Fortified
1795 Barbeito Madeira Terrantez Portugal, Madeira
92 points
I'm not sure I'm a huge maderia guy, but having said that this was a very good example. Nose of dried lemon peel, perfume, a touch of plastic/rubber, brown sugar, aerosol can, dates, raisins, figs, brown butter, anise root and musky sweat. Palate is still fairly sweet with heady alcohol, however turns a bit bitter and sour toward the finish.
Red
2009 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Treinta y Dos Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro
This is not particularly my style of pinot. Quite dark and heavily extracted. Fruit is centre stage and is on the darker side for pinot. Palate shows some minerality on the moderate, slightly drying finish.
Red
1999 Marcassin Pinot Noir Blue-Slide Ridge Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
89 points
Slightly pruney overrripe fruit. The 14.9% alcohol on the label certainly indicates the level of fruit ripeness this wine shows. Notes of dark cherries, prunes, figs, barrel spice, and cola are prevalent on the nose. While this shows and aged character the barrel notes that are integrating are certainly clearly there. The palate shows heat and the length of finish is moderate on slightly overripe and cola notes.

1994 Harlan Estate USA, California, Napa Valley

Nose is very powerful, dense, dark and primary. It blasts florals, violets, blackberry liqueur, brandy, and cassis. The palate is slightly short and alcoholic.
Red
1994 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
95 points
Very classically styled bordeaux nose with just the right amount of brett for my palate. Nose of cedar, leather, farmyard, violets, dark cherries and black currants. Palate is lovely and showing fairly integrated with low tannins and fairly prevalent acid on the long finish. Consistent with a magnum consumed earlier this year, if a touch more advanced, integrated, and with a bit more brett (fine by me).
Red
1994 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
93 points
Quite dark in fruit profile. Nose of baked plums, cassis, blackberry, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Palate has mouthfilling ripe fairly primary fruit and finishes fairly long on macerated dark cherries and jujubes.
Red
1941 Inglenook Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
This showed well if perhaps a little below expectations. Nose was very dusty, musty, and medicinal on first pour, but evolved with some air to reveal some brown spice, mint, wet decaying leaves, peat, and potpourri. The palate come across as dried prunes and peaty but carried on surprisingly long. While there isn't a lot of pleasure left in this bottle it was a fascinating glimpse into the past of this legendary winery and was still fun to drink.
Red
1975 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Extremely Bordeaux like, in fact it is much like Pichon Lalande. Loads of leather, mushroom, cedar, herbs, cherries, red currants, black currants and wet animal fur. Really beautiful and just a bit green and herbal. Palate is well integrated with just a bit of fine dusty tannin remaining and finishes long.
Red
2002 Noon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
90 points
Quite concentrated nose of candy cane, candied dark cherries, blackberries. Palate is structured, firm and tannic though the tannins are sweet and reveal a candy cane note. A touch of the 16.1% alcohol shows through but it is remarkably well hidden.
Red
1986 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
94 points
This is still showing young. Nose is very eucalyptus driven similarly showing peppermint with plums and mixed dark berries. Palate is quite dark, silky and fairly integrated showing hints of roasted meat. The finish is carries on fairly long.
Red
1999 Torbreck RunRig Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
94 points
Here we have a very different expression than the '86 Grange served beside it. This shows a bit more oak, but also a lot more whole cluster character. Nose is fabulously complex showing smoke, stems, coffee bean, pepper, blueberry, blackberry and cured meat. Palate is almost creamy with mild dusty, ripe tannins and a long finish. Almost 95 on this.
Red
2001 Noon Shiraz Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
90 points
Bright, red berry fruited, with mint/eucalyptus and some blueberry. Tannin are prevalent on this and the alcohol and acid bite slightly on the finish, though again this is well hidden given this is 15.5%+.
Red
1969 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
92 points
Obviously a very mature, slightly oxidative, and somewhat bretty and volatile wine. Nose of wet leaves, nut shells, dried orange rind, potpourri, ash and tea leaves. This is very developed and feels just a bit past prime albeit still pleasurable. Palate feels very light with little left in the way of fruit. Finish carries on fairly long with notes of leaves and spice.
Red
2002 Noon Eclipse Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
93 points
My favourite of the noon wines is the eclipse. What Drew noon is doing with his old bush-vine pre-phylloxera vines is awesome. Nose is of flesh, blood, florals, spice and touches of citrus (blood oranage). Palate is so inviting and caressing. Finish is long and shows no alcohol with mild remaining tannins. Finish replays mild citrus notes with some darker fruit. Awesome!
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Mullineux Chenin Blanc Straw Wine South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
91 points
Nose of orange candy, citrus peel oils, and some noted volatility no doubt due to drying on straw mats. Palate is of candied orange and lemon drops. Nicely done for this style.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
92 points
Excellent wine and a great way to finish things off. Nose is very expressive with citrus blossom, lemon candy and spice. Palate is excellently balanced carried on citrus and very solid acidity.
