Introduction

Seven of us gathered at Rincon 38 for some tapas and mix of CDP and Spain.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2002 Laurent-Perrier Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
91 points
This was pretty consistent with my previous experience. The is some nice red apple and delicate pear on the nose with more subtle minerals this time. The palate has tart pear, light body, delicate, tree fruit, and minerality. It builds slowly over the 30 minutes. The minerality was not as striking as before.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White - Off-dry
2002 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
92 points
Light gold color. The nose has citrus, minerals, melon, pineapple, no petrol. The palate is sweet with the acids providing just enough backdrop to keep this balanced well, tropical, pineapple, melon, kiwi, very vibrant palate, long finish. The palate was even better than the nose here. 91+ to 92pts.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine Vrignaud Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This was pretty tightly wound and a bit stark up front, saline, minerals and not much else. The palate had stark minerality, lemon. This began to blow up from where it was at after about 15-20 minutes and developed a lemon, lemon parfait nose with lots of white flowers. The palate showed some good focus with lemon, citrus zest, to balance the minerality and left you with a medium finish with a hint of peach. Nice transformation.

White
2009 Henri Germain et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
89 points
Light gold color. Oaky on the nose, toasted, citrus mineral, some butterscotch, lemon, citrus. The palate reflects the nose well, and there is a medium plus finish, which is enveloped in sharp oak. Perhaps this will integrate more over the next 3 years.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White
2011 Saint Cosme Condrieu France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
92 points
Light gold color. The nose is tropical, floral and aromatic, lychee, grapefruit, tropical. The palate is nicely round, deep, lychee, citrus, tropical, complex, floral, and quite long. This was really nice and hard to keep in the glass. 92+pts.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. Red fruit, cherry, a bit lean, minerals, oak, spices. The palate is lean as well, cherry, kirsch, alcohol, spice, oak, medium body. This was disjointed initially, but after about 30 minutes it really settled down and integrated pretty well.

Red
1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. Dark fruit, violets, herb de Provence, mineral, dark berry fruit, licorice on the nose. The palate is medium bodied, kirsch, spiced, black cherry, dark fruit, savory, bright and deep. Long finish. Surprisingly this this rivaled the '01 tonight.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 1 hour. Drank 1 glass over an hour. This was really good, but not the wow it has been in the past. The nose has blackberry liqueur, glycerin, floral, dried herb, cherry-raisin. The palate shows blackberry liqueur, kirsch, molasses, spice, glycerin, raisin, ripe, and a little heat on the finish.
Red
2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Very dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Gorgeous, deep and earthy on the nose and palate, very floral on the nose, violets, ripe berry, cherry bon bon, earthy, blueberry, herb de Provence. The tannins are still moderate but rounded and this has a great deep earthiness to blend with the deep red and blue fruits, Bub's Daddy cherry palate, herbs, and a savory finish. Still youthful.

Red
2001 Bodegas LAN Rioja Reserva Culmen Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
94 points
Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour. I loved this, very fresh and and savory, just awesome. The nose is floral, fresh dill, bright, red and black fruits, dried herbs, savory. The palate is fresh and offers a complex mix of red cherry, red licorice, blueberry, and blackberry, spice, savory, dried herbs, medium-full bodied, intense on the mid palate and the finish. Tannins are fine grained and the finish is long. This is really hitting its stride now and should continue to develop for another several years. I'd like to give my last bottle 3-5 years if I can hold out.

2001 Bodegas Mauro Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León Vendimia Seleccionada Spain, Castilla y León, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León
90 points
Dark purple/red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. If I'm reading my notes right, it says, "big ass wine"...Blackberry, blackberry liqueur, dark cherry, oak . The palate is dense and chewy, blackberry, cassis, black cherry, concentrated, full bodied, firm drying tannins, oak, the alcohol shows some on the finish. Some sharp edges from the oak and alcohol detract.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Medium gold color. This has improved dramatically from the last few times I've had it. Much more depth and complexity now. Honey, peach, orange, spiced, vanilla. The palate is nicely round now, deep, richly textured, apricot, pineapple, orange marmalade, vanilla bean, spicebox. Delicious now, this could prove to be a very underrated wine. 93(+)pts.
