Introduction

Tasting at Knightsbridge of available wines, many directly from the domaine or Bordeaux negociant, followed by dinner with some friends, mostly bringing older vintages of LLC.

Flight 1 - Tasting at Knightsbridge (14 notes)

Red
2009 Fugue de Nénin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
86 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe black fruit with spice hints. Simple, good now.
Red
2010 Château Potensac France, Bordeaux, Médoc
86 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe black fruit with subtle spice and clear liqueur notes. Good now.
Red
2011 Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
85 points
Tasting, brief note. 60% Old vine Merlot from near the water and 40% young vine Cabernet. Simple flavors, rounded textures I'd associate with Merlot, then a slightly rough and rugged finish.
Red
2004 Château Nenin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
85 points
Tasting, brief note. Fresh enough black fruit for its age with rounded textures. Some rough structural edges that detracted from overall pleasure. Better to drink soon.
Red
2000 Château Nenin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Tasting, brief note. No surprise, a huge step up vs 2004 just tasted. Black cherry, dark chocolate, cigarbox hints. Bottle had been open ~ 6 hours, and still slightly firm. Good power and length. Good now, prob better in a few more years.
Red
2008 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. Dense black fruit with firm tannins, intriguing minerality. Very firm now. Clearly very good+ potential, but I would give this until at least 2020.
Red
1999 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. black plum, good spice, lead pencil aromas. Very good+ nose, less exciting flavors. Firm, slightly rugged finish.
Red
2010 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
Tasting, brief note. While the 1990 was the best tasting wine tonight, this 2010 showed the greatest potential. Cross-section of black fruit with dark chocolate and vanilla. Spice notes throughout. Very good concentration, great textures. Seems nicely balanced already today.

Red
2009 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
94 points
Tasting, brief note. Ripe and nicely concentrated. Long, powerful, but not quite harmonious. Certainly cellarworthy, but not nearly as exciting as the 2010 just tasted.
Red
2006 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Tasting, brief note. all black fruit with some liqueur, licorice and dark chocolate. Very dense in the middle, less nuanced on finish vs the 2010 or 2009 just tasted, but nicely balanced. Probably just now entering its peak drinking window.

Red
2004 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Tasting, brief note. Dark fruit is all very good, but leaner than other vintages and an overall simpler character. Slightly hollow middle. Drinking nicely now, and I don't see lots of upside.

Red
1993 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. More earth than anything else. Thinner as well. Time to drink.
Red
1990 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Tasting, brief note. Plum and black cherry with dark chocolate, vanilla, and espresso, then faint leather hints in background. Opulent and expressive with excellent balance.
Red
1982 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
flawed
Tasting, brief note. This has consistently been an inconsistent wine and tonight's bottles was tired and fully mature, one of the least interesting examples of this wine I've had in recent years.

Flight 2 - Post-Tasting Dinner (10 notes)

White
2009 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc de Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux
87 points
Grapefruit, very tart lemon and a little too much grassy character. Good acidity and energy.
Red
1974 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Popped and poured. Light, fully mature. Trying, trying, trying to show something interesting, but it never got there.
Red
1983 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Popped and poured. Barnyard galore to start, which softened a little with more air, but this never really became interesting.
Red
1988 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
enjoyable fruit, moderately mature, but with more pronounced structure than the fruit can support. Tannins really dominate middle to finish. Enjoyable.

Red
1986 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Nicely mature black fruit with earth and cigarbox hints. Very good overall balance. Not as good a bottle as a few others I recall from the past, or perhaps it's just time to drink up.
Red
1989 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
88 points
Popped and poured. Pleasant, slightly simple fruit with spice hints and slightly more interesting, rounded textures. Good now.
Red
1994 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
89 points
Charming aromatic start with black and red fruit, nicely maturing. Slightly less exciting flavors, similar but with just moderate depth and weight. Still, this is very good for the vintage.
Red
1995 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Open approx one hour before serving. Black plum and currant with tobacco. Some roast meat and leather. Still fresh. Firm, slightly backward but with very good concentration so easy to enjoy even now. Better in the future.

Black cherry, leather, cigarbox. Nicely balanced, but slightly simpler and shorter than I expected.
Red
2004 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT
Tough to tasted this after an evening of Bordeaux, but here it was. Floral with wonderful spice and bright red berries, quite ripe, still nicely fresh. Red berry and cherry flavors starting to mature with intense acidity.
