Flight 1 - Warm Ups (4 notes)

The Chardonnays were nonblind.

White
2014 Pazo Cilleiro Rías Baixas Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

Deep yellow color. Stony white fruit and hints of pepper. Orchard fruit on the palate with a subtle but distinct tropical edge. Bright acidity. Guessed Albariño.

2015 Spottswoode Field Book Albariño Rusty Gates Farms Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Opens with a dirty quality that's kind of distracting but that quickly blows off leaving pear, florals and peach notes. There's some very nice fruit on the palate along with honeycomb and a subtle floral quality. The floral notes had me thinking Viognier, and I thought domestic.

2013 Walter Hansel Winery Chardonnay Cahill Lane USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Nonblind, tasting the leftovers from the Friday group warm ups. Lovely smoky, toasted orchard fruit and linen notes. Full-bodied. Apple and toast on the palate as well and the fruit carries the wood nicely. Excellent. I didn't jot down a score, but I'd say 92-95 range depending upon your tolerance/like of toast.

Nonblind, tasting the leftovers from the Friday group warm ups. Notes of banana, florals and apple. Medium-bodied; flavors of tropical fruit with a nice finish. This seems a bit four square - decent but nothing exciting, although perhaps being opened 24 hours earlier has a little to do with that. Well-made; good.

Flight 2 - Double Blind Reds (5 notes)

Red
2005 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills
93 points
Ruby color. Opens with a pleasant funkiness followed by cherry and spice and a great perfumed floral quality. Spicy red fruit dominates the palate. This really grabbed my attention and held on to it- at peak.
Red
2013 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro delle Rose Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
88 points
Herbal, peppery and briny with dark fruit underneath. Lighter on the palate than I expected based on the bouquet, with pepper, red fruit and nice acidity.
Red
2004 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Vandal Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
89 points
Aromas of dark fruit, tobacco and currant with a nice earthy undertone. Lighter in body than the bouquet and color suggest, with integrated tannin and flavors of dark fruit, plum and forest floor. Finishes with good length. To me this seemed old world and I guessed Bordeaux.
Red
2005 Novy Family Wines Syrah Parsons' Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
flawed
Opens with a briny, pickled note along with plum and dark fruit. Black fruit and spice on the palate with a nice finish. Turns sour on the finish as it sits and I thought I detected some VA as well. No guess, and I certainly didn't recognize it as our Novy.

This was terrific when the cork was first pulled- I can't believe how quickly it fell apart. We quickly double decanted it off its sediment just before we left for the tasting- this hadn't been open for more than an hour. Recommend pop & pour.
Red
2013 Hearst Ranch Winery Malbec Babicora USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
91 points
Another one with a briny quality in the bouquet, along with dark fruit and underbrush. There's a nice mix of red and dark fruit on the palate and it finishes with good length. Develops blue fruit and vanilla qualities; structured but enjoyable. No guess.

Flight 3 - Double Blind Reds (4 notes)

Red
2002 Turley Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
92 points
Aromas of dark fruit, incense and vanilla. Dark fruit dominates the palate; long finish. Guessed Syrah.
Red
2005 Novy Family Wines Syrah Page Nord USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Nice fruit in the bouquet, along with spice, tar and burnt rubber notes. Thin and rubbery on the palate at first, but dark fruit and spice qualities come on as it sits. Guessed Syrah.

Again, compared to when it was first opened and double decanted off its sediment, this was disappointing. It had been open two hours prior so here again, pop & pour is recommended.
Red
2009 Benjamin Romeo Rioja Predicador Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
91 points
Notes of red fruit, spice and oak. Soft and pleasant but somewhat nondescript as I really don't get a sense of what this is. Nice structure; abundant dark fruit on the palate with a nice finish. I ended up guessing Syrah on this one as I really didn't know where else to go with it.
Red
2013 Robert Biale Petite Sirah Royal Punishers USA, California, Napa Valley
Notes of dark fruit and cassis. Initially a bit thin on the palate and rather tight- dark fruit. Even with vigorous swirling tis remains tight and tannic; big. Guessed Petite Sirah.
