Flight 1 (22 notes)

White - Sparkling
2002 House of Arras E J Carr Late Disgorged Australia, Tasmania
91 points
Cherry, toast, lemon, oat and some apples. Quite rich but very good acidity across its length. Well balanced and has layers to it.
White - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
91 points
Marshmallow, some herb, lemon curd, spice and earth. Quite mild in terms of both fruit and acidity, it works reasonably well in terms of balance, but it doesn't really thrill, not yet anyway.

White
1991 Seppelt Riesling Drumborg Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Henty
91 points
Floral, orange, honey, petrol and lime aromas. The acid line here gives it a real lift and boost, even with the fruit having rounded out into a honeyed richness. In great condition and a really good example of the ageing potential of the Drumborg Riesling.
White
1994 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Eden Valley Riesling Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
flawed
Corked.
White
2013 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Blind. Smoke, flint, floral, lemon and apple aromas. The palate has beautiful tension, the fruit has excellent purity and there is some superbly precise acidity. Brilliant length, this is a wine that ticks pretty much all the boxes.
White
2015 Stoney Rise Chardonnay Holyman Australia, Tasmania
90 points
Blind. Oak, sesame, some rubber and toast. The palate has some fruit sweetness that helps pin it as new world, but there is really good restraint to it. Good length and flow. If the oak on the nose settles down, this should be really good.
White
2009 Lake's Folly Chardonnay Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
90 points
Floral, musk, straw and chalk. Full bodied but has the acidity to keep up. Good flow and controlled power here. Lots of appeal.
White
2009 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
flawed
Too advanced - likely premox.
White
2003 Stefano Lubiana Chardonnay Collina Australia, Tasmania
flawed
Over the hill and has totally faded away. Not sure if this was a poor bottle.
White
2006 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
91 points
Good perfume with florals, straw, melon and some toasty oak. The palate is youthful, with the flinty acidity taking a more prominent role that is usual with Giaconda. I like that it is held back a little more and I hope that some further age will give it more complexity.
Red
2007 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Echezeaux Les Rouges du Bas France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
Blind. Herbs, spice, iron, stalk, pretty autumn leaves and perfumed florals - really beguiling on the nose. The palate is both savoury and sweet, with excellent acidity. Lovely, pure and delicious.
Red
2008 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir Australia, Tasmania
88 points
Cherry, plum, wood, blackberry and stalks. Quite hard on the palate, with the tannins at the fore. Feels like it might be in a bit of an awkward spot, with the structure not really allowing it to be expressive right now.
Red
2007 Kooyong Pinot Noir Ferrous Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
87 points
Herb, cherry, graphite, ash and cranberry. Dry and tannic, this has serious structure behind it, but not a lot of depth to the fruit. I wonder how this will go with more time, but it wasn't really super enjoyable now.
Red
2012 Kooyong Pinot Noir Ferrous Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
90 points
Charcoal, raspberry, stem and cherries. Clean and pure red fruited palate, there is good acidity and while it is structured, the fruit gives it good lift. To the side of the 2007, this was much more appealing.
Red
2015 Passionvale Shiraz Sangiovese Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
88 points
Blind. Smoke, candied musk, bubblegum and peppery notes. Fresh on the palate, there is good restraint to the fruit. Falls off a little early on the palate, but otherwise very good.
Red
2010 Greer Cabernet Sauvignon Greer Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
92 points
Herbs, blackberry, licorice, spice and pepper. Quite a big profile on the palate, with that green note carrying through and giving it an extra dimension. Has the structure to continue developing over the medium term. Great to try.
Red
1997 Dalla Valle Maya USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Violet, chocolate, earth, herb, cigar box and graphite. The palate is wonderfully composed, with a lovely blend of savoury and sweet fruit. Feels like it is at just the right point between youth and aged development for me. Super stuff.
Red
1996 Rockford Shiraz SVS Hoffmann Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
flawed
Awful. I hope this wasn't a representative bottle. Hot alcohol, menthol and varnish. The palate is an alcoholic mess.
White - Fortified
N.V. Equipo Navazos La Bota de Oloroso 46 "Montilla" Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles
94 points
Nutty, orange, rancio, saline, lemon and caramel. Really shows a great acid lift, with that saline character coming through. So much complexity and the richness from the glycerol gives it great length. A touch less jaw-dropping than the last time I has this, but still truly wonderful.
White - Off-dry
2009 Schmitges Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
90 points
Half bottle. Apricot, orange, pineapple and slate. Fresh on the palate, with plenty of lift, but not a lot of complexity at the moment. Think that the complexity should come with time.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 J.B. Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Rheingau
91 points
Mango, nutty and orange aromas. A punchy sweet element on the palate upfront that is rather nice, though a touch more acidity and I would be thrilled by this. Consistently good though.
Red - Fortified
1996 Rockford Shiraz VP Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Chocolate, blackberry, cherry liqueur, charcoal and bark. Has some decent intensity, though it isn't distinctly sweet, medium depth and length. Don't think I've tried one of these before, so definitely a pleasure to encounter it.
