Flight 1 (19 notes)

White - Sparkling
2012 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Millésimé Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules France, Champagne
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Subtle floral start with red berry aromas and flavors. rounded textures, moderate weight and length. I prefer this over the 2011 version.
White - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
91 points
Lots of ripe and powerful apple throughout, with at least as much toast and yeast notes. Certainly good in its style, but this will become very bready/ yeasty in the next few years, which I doubt I will like.

White
2011 La Pousse d'Or Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Opened two bottles from the same case and they were slightly different. First was floral, ripe and dense, with a linear/ precise character from middle to finish. Second showed more opulent fruit and some thought a more pronounced sense of new oak, and was less harmonious. Will need to open another soon as a tie-breaker.
Red
1990 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Bottle had been well stored for many years, but alas, musty, tired and too barnyardy. Drinkable, but disappointing vs expectations.
Red
2002 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Maturing red cherry start-to-finish with Asian five spice. Moderate length and weight, excellent balance. Still showing good structural support. No upside from here, and very enjoyable today so probably best to drink up soon. Better than another bottle from the same case opened a year+ ago.

2002 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Black fruit with woodsy notes and very good density and length. Meaty, powerful and still tannic, I'd expect this to be much better in 5 years and probably even better in 10.

2012 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Served double blind, I correctly identified this as Puligny 1er Cru from 2012. Ripe, rich and slightly tropical, but with just enough acidity and then more minerality to make it seem almost restrained and elegant. Still, probably best to drink young, perhaps 2018-2026.

2009 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
89 points
Tasted double blind. A perplexing wine. Lots of very lush, ripe black fruit with good concentration. This came across Pinot-like but with so little complexity, acidity or any of the hallmarks of Burgundy made at this level. Fun to taste blind, thanks for tricking me, Sheldon!
Red
2009 Maison Champy Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
86 points
Small glass, brief note. Maturing red cherry with spice hints. Very enjoyable. Simple but good for Villages at this price.
Red
2009 Domaine Perrot-Minot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru La Richemone Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Broad cross-section of black, red and blue berries here with Vosne styled spices. Similar flavors but slightly more rugged and firm on palate. Good now but I think this has 93 point potential 2020 forward.

1964 Ceretto Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
This bottle had been opened the day before, at which point it might have been good, but today it seemed more like rotting garbage.

2008 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
Small glass, served double blind. Both rich and opulent while also tense and energetic. Black plum, liqueur and roast meat character. Rounded and beautifully balanced. Very long. I thought it right bank Bordeaux.
Red
1995 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Dense black fruit with tobacco and liqueur hints. Structure comes across as more elegant, integrated and harmonious vs the last couple of times tasted in the past few years.

1995 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Small glass, brief note. Dense black fruit showing more maturation than I expected, while also still firmly structured. Good concentration, but slightly lacking harmony.
Red
1996 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Dense black fruit but too firmly structured with both acid and tannins for giving pleasure at present. Upside from here?
Red
1998 Tertre Rôteboeuf France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Came across as very modern with overly roasted black fruit. Perhaps some heat damage, but this was a disappointing bottle given its reputation.
Red
2005 E. Guigal St. Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Gamy and underbrushy with good concentration, but slightly lacking in fresh fruit for its age. I preferred this when younger.

2003 Château Calon-Ségur France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
86 points
Small glass, brief note. Very ripe, very dark and chewy. Backward for now, so cellar longer, but it's unclear if this will ever really be balanced and pleasurable.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 Weingut Johannes Karst & Söhne Kallstadter Kobnert Ehrenfelser Eiswein Germany, Pfalz
87 points
Tasted double blind, small glass, brief note. Tough to identify. Seemed lower acid than Riesling, while rich but not very sweet or unctuous. Plus displaying an almost Rose color. Moderate length, weight. Good overall.
