Introduction

A first growth dinner that involved several iconic wines.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
98 points
From a half bottle. Drinking incredibly well right now. Deep golden color. This is packed with aromatics, ranging from tropical fruits, apricot, honey, and vanilla. Seemingly perfect viscosity and weight. The finish is long, fresh, and memorable. This is already a fantastic wine, but I am certain it will improve with more evolution. Regardless, you can definitely start popping your half bottles of this.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1988 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
From a standard bottle. Light yellow color, not indicative of its age. Interestingly, this had a distinctive petrol aroma, in addition to pineapple, honey, and white flowers. Lighter on the palate and lacking a bit of concentration. Still, there is nice freshness to balance with the fruit. Now is the time to drink this wine, as it certainly won't improve from here.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
1961 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
98 points
Clearly the strongest wine of the dinner. An intoxicating nose. Smelled exactly like olive tapenade. Dark color, not showing its age. The black currant is so pure, along with cigar tobacco and leather. A bit smoky. Beautifully elegant on the palate, where everything seemed so complete. Impeccable balance. A long, memorable finish that just made you want to immediately go back for more. The acidity in just the right place, perfectly balancing with the fruit. A stellar wine.

1975 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
Dark ruby color. Black cherry, earth, herbs, red licorice, and baking spice on the nose. Softness on the palate developed with time. At first, the wine was flat. After a few hours, it finally emerged. A lovely mouthfeel. Minerality on the palate. Tannins in the background and nicely integrated. A medium length finish.

1986 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Still tight and tannic. A bit high perceived acidity. Has that distinctive Margaux perfume, very floral, but also has some coffee and olive component as well. I expect more from this wine. Acidity needs to mellow out a bit.
Red
1989 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
Totally outclassed the 1986 Margaux on this evening. Cedar, lead pencil, cassis, blackberry, and a bit of smoked meat. Very impressive complexity. This vintage of Margaux always impresses me. Smooth tannins that are well-integrated at this stage. Acidity in a good place. Nice, fresh finish with good length.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
1994 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
The least impressive wine of the evening. A bit of funk on the nose. Dark chocolate, black cherry, brown spices, tobacco. Nice complexity on the nose. A bit thin on the palate, but smooth. High acidity was just too hard to ignore.

1995 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
A bit musty on the nose, but the fruit was there. Had some of the gravelly, smoky tobacco elements, but took awhile to emerge. Linear, focused, and nicely structured. Not memorable on this evening. Perhaps in an awkward phase, I would try this in a few years.

Flight 4 (4 notes)

Red
1990 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
97 points
Incredible every time. So balanced. Perfect acidity. The sweet earthiness envelops the core of dark fruit perfectly. The nose is unmistakable. Animalistic and raw. Round on the palate. Powerful. A long memorable finish.

1990 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Elegant weight. Light ruby color. A nose that shows real class. Very floral, eucalyptus, mushroom, red fruits. Light on its feet. Just kept improving with time. Clean on the nose and palate.
Red
1990 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
96 points
Beautiful bright ruby color. Red and dark fruits, leathery, tobacco, wet cedar. A blockbuster s in the making. Very drinkable and charming right now. It's hard not to like this.

This wine always appears younger than it is. There is so much potential and longevity with this wine. Everything is in the right place. The tannins are soft and smooth. The fruit is ripe, pure, and electric. Drinking this, you can almost envision all the parts fitting together perfectly. Due to its youth, it just isn't as fun to drink as the 1990 right now. That said, this should outlast the 1990 by several years.
