Chicago, IL

Introduction

Collin had a bunch of us over at his place for dinner and Northern Rhone wines (with a few bonus ringers slipped in, as the wines were all poured double blind).

Flight 1 - Whites (3 notes)

Served with bread, a nice mix of cheeses and grilled scallops

White
2004 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
91 points
Light gold in colour. Full bodied and rich with flavours of flowers, toast, perfume, honey and some waxy notes on the nose and palate.
White
2005 Domaine Auguste Clape St. Péray France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Péray
89 points
Light gold colour with a lovely nose of flowers, honey and white fruits. Palate shows clean peach and melon notes with some waxiness and a little warmth on the finish.
White
1991 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Medium gold in colour. A stunning, complex nose keeps evolving with time to show white fruits, flowers, honey, toast and musk. Palate is full bodied and slightly viscous with more complex flavours of peach, citrus fruits, flowers, toast and nuts, moderate acidity and a long, rich finish.

Flight 2 - Reds - I (3 notes)

With lentils and stuffed mushrooms. This wasn't planned as a 2000 Cote Rotie horizontal - just a nice coincidence.

Red
2000 Patrick Jasmin Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
89 points
Dark red/purple colour with a big, perfumed nose showing spice, flowers and red fruits. Silky mouthfeel with more spicy red fruits on the palate and a medium length finish.
Red
2000 J. Vidal-Fleury Côte-Rôtie la Chatillonne Côte Blonde France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
90 points
Dark reddish-purple with rich flavours of black and red fruits, spice, earth and minerals on the nose and palate, a silky texture, lifting acidity and a long finish.
There was a second bottle of this (only difference was that the label on that read Blonde de Vidal Fleury) that wasn't quite as impressive, showing a little bit more oak and almost Chateauneuf like herb notes.
Red
2000 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Deep red with a stunning nose of dark fruits, meat, white pepper and some floral notes. Silky and elegant on the palate with more spice, meat and red fruits and a long finish.

Flight 3 - Reds - II (4 notes)

With more lentils, pureed root vegetables and roast lamb with rosemary.

Red
2001 Château de Campuget Syrah Costières-de-Nîmes Cuvée la Sommelière France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes
87 points
Very dark red in colour. Nose shows flavours of black and blue fruits over pepper, caramel and coffee. Palate is fairly tannic with more black and blue fruits, pepper and toast with a medium length, slightly warm finish.
Red
2000 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
89 points
Reddish-purple in the glass, showing lots of cherry and dark fruits over pepper and meaty flavours and an elegant, silky mouthfeel.
Red
1999 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Langi Australia, Victoria
90 points
Dark red/purple with lovely aromatics of spice, dark fruits and pepper. Silky texture in the mouth with more flavours of red and dark fruits and pepper, chewy tannins and good acidity with a medium length finish showing a little warmth.
Red
2003 Alain Graillot St. Joseph France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
82 points
I found the nose on this very off-putting with funky, almost melted plastic-like notes over oak, caramel and some red fruits. Palate was a bit more pleasant with very ripe red fruits, earth and more oak, but this felt too extracted and clunky.

Flight 4 - Bonus red to go with the food (1 note)

Red
2001 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
88 points
Nose of bright red fruits, leather and earth dominated by a lot of barnyard funkiness. Lush, smooth palate shows cherries, meat and earth with soft tannins and a medium length finish.

Flight 5 - Dessert (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1998 Weingut Knoll Grüner Veltliner Trockenbeerenauslese Loibner Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
93 points
Orange-gold in colour. Intense nose of caramel, orange peel, tropical fruits, sugar and honey. Full bodied and very sweet with more honeyed orange and tropical fruits flavours following in the mouth with good acidity keeping it from being syrupy or cloying. Finish is long and rich.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Domaine Deletang Montlouis-sur-Loire Moelleux Les Batisses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
91 points
Golden-yellow in colour. Medium bodied with clean flavours of honey, apricot, grapefruit, flowers and some tropical fruit on the nose and palate and a medium length finish. Very balanced, elegant and still seemed quite young.

Closing

Thanks a lot for hosting this Collin - the company, food and most of the wines were excellent - had a great evening.
