Gravitas - Washington, DC

Tasted June 24, 2021 by dcwino with 193 views

Introduction

To celebrated Justin’s upcoming wedding, 13 of us got together to celebrate this momentous occasion and share the joy. The venue was the rooftop at Gravitas. All the wines showed really well. The 00 Margaux was the WOTN by a big margin.

Flight 1 - Fevre (1 note)

White
2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
En magnum, medium expressive nose displaying coiled yellow citrus fruit, hint of honey, a hint of sea breeze and steely mineral. Excellent concentration, nicely layered concentrated yellow citrus fruit, dense and focused, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a medium to long concentrated coiled yellow fruit driven finish. Although excellently focused and absolutely correct, it doesn’t express a clear style, i.e. opulent of Raveneau or precision of Dauvissat.

Flight 2 - Krug (2 notes)

The 96 was great. The GC with almost a decades of cellaring in magnum showed really well.

White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
98 points
Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying decadent delicious yellow fruit with a hint of red, cinnamon baked apple, a hint of red currant, brioche, light caramel, honey, smoke, sweet spices and limestone mineral. There is a slight hint of the classic Krug vintage oxidative note. Perfectly integrated palate, very finely layered sweet yellow and light red fruit, very fine abundant mousse, rich and opulent yet also very precise and refined, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral and a long sweet yellow and red fruit driven finish with a hint of cinnamon and smoke at the end. The 96 Krug is drinking at the peak.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
95 points
En magnum with slightly less than a decade of bottle age. Expressive nose displaying apple, baked apple, a hint of lemon curd, oyster shell, marzipan, sweet spices and limestone mineral. Beautifully integrated palate, nicely layered pure concentrated yellow fruit, find generous mousse, beautiful balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long sweet yellow fruit driven mineral finish. Although youthful, this shows beautiful harmony and balance.

Flight 3 - Roulot (1 note)

White
2012 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
96 points
Rich and concentrated nose displaying sweet ripe yellow fruit, apple, peach, a hint of lemon curd, honey, sweet spices, beeswax, smoke and strong mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated yellow fruit, dense and rich without being heavy, medium acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with a hint of honey and mineral at the end. This clearly displays the goodness of the 12 vintage, i.e. rich, concentrated yet nicely balanced. Not worth the current market price.

Flight 4 - Chardonnay (2 notes)

White
2014 Aubert Chardonnay CIX Estate Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
95 points
Expressive nose displaying very ripe tropical fruit, pineapple, white peach, apple, a hint of lemon curd, bubble yum, pina colada, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of ripe concentrated tropical fruit, rich and unctuous, noticeable sweetness, and a long ripe tropical fruit driven finish with a hint of mineral and heat at the end. Very Aubert and nicely handling the ripeness.
White
2012 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Côte USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
92 points
This is even richer, riper and oakier than the Aubert with noticeable heat. A textbook Peter Michael. This is a very divisive wine. Personally, I would try to consume in the first five years.

Flight 5 - Red Burgundy (2 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
97 points
Fully mature complex nose displaying subtle black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, cooked mixed berries, stewed tomato, strong soy, sous bois, DRC stem, Chinese herbal medicine, Vosne spice, red tea and earth. Fully integrated palate, very finely layered slightly dry and stewed red and black fruit, nicely detailed and weightless, perfect amount of acidity, stemmy mineral and a seamless long stewed red and black fruit driven finish with Chinese herbal medicine and soy at the end. This is drinking beautifully clearly expressing the vineyard and the vintage. Excellent showing but no need to wait.

Red
2005 Domaine de Montille Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Christiane France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
96 points
En magnum. Expressive youthful nose displaying perfectly ripe concentrated black fruit, blackberry, blackberry concentrate, black cherry, a hint of Vosne spice, caramel and mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated ripe black fruit, unbelievably rich yet showing exceptional balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long concentrated youthful black fruit driven finish. This is a big scale wine that is very enjoyable but remains very youthful not showing much sous bois. Excellent showing.

Flight 6 - Bordeaux (2 notes)

Both really shined

Red
2000 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
100 points
From the first nose, it is simply perfect. Explosive nose displaying perfectly ripe concentrated black fruit, crushed blackberry, black cherry, crème de cassis, licorice, lead pencil, rose, liquid smoke, cedar, lead pencil and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration and perfect balance, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe black fruit, rich and unctuous yet also very precise and detailed, perfect amount of acidity and limestone mineral, and the never ending finish. Although it is already perfect, this can evolve for a few more decades. Absolutely perfect!

Red
2000 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
98 points
The same source as the last bottle that I thought was perfect. Expressive nose displaying unbelievably concentrated black and blue fruit, blackberry jam, crème de cassis, blueberry pie, licorice, dark milk chocolate, noticeable vanillin oak, smoke, dark spices and limestone mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense ripe black fruit, rich and unctuous yet also silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long black fruit driven finish with liquid smoke and dark milk chocolate at the end. The server was a bit rough and the wine suffered a bit. Nevertheless, it was incredibly enjoyable. AP though it got better with air.

Flight 7 - Chateauneuf-du-Pape (3 notes)

This flight was really challenging

Red
2009 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
96 points
En magnum, expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe sweet black fruit, blackberry, blackberry pie, wet tobacco, garrigue, lavender, liquid smoke, soy and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, rich and opulent yet also silky and precise, perfect amount of acidity and earthy mineral, and a seamless long black fruit driven finish with tobacco and lavender at the end. This remains very primary and can improve for a couple more decades or longer.
Red
2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
En magnum. This is a big scale CDP. Incredibly concentrated and expressive but showing a lot of heat. I think it would have been significantly more enjoyable served alone.
Red
2010 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Sanctus Sanctorum France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
En magnum. Surprisingly different than the 07 Machina. Expressive nose displaying concentrated sweet black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry jam, black cherry, crème de cassis, cherry compote, garrigue, baking spices, tobacco and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of explosive black fruit, rich and opulent yet also silky and nicely detailed, medium acidity and strong mineral, and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with caramel and crème de cassis at the end. There is a hint of heat but manageable. Still needs time. If you love a big scale CDP, your rating will be a few points higher.

Flight 8 - Sticky (2 notes)

Red - Fortified
1983 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
93 points
This is a beautifully mature Port. A lot of dry dark fruit, dry fig, fruit cake, licorice, dark caramel, dark spices and brown sugar. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered rich dry fruits, good acidity and mineral, and a seamless long dry black fruit driven finish. This still shows ample fruit. Really enjoyable.
