Introduction

An incredible tasting of all Scarecrow vintages, including the PNV wines.

All wines from the bottle without decanting.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2003 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

A great debut vintage, violet berries, dark fruit, some licorice, a bit dusty, a hint of cassis. Some heat, but still on a reasonable level. At first I was a bit worried, that it would fall apart with too much air, as it had a whiff of overly mature notes, but with some air this blew off and it was just delicious. So I'd say that there is still quite a bit of life left here.

Purple and red fruit, fruity jelly, a nose that reminds me of a dusty very dry road. As in so many Scarecrow this exhibits that "weighless intensity" that I love so much.
Red
2005 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
96 points
Very intense nose, nice sweetness, chocolate, cassis, dark, black fruit. Yet again despite all that flavor intensity and ripeness it was elegant and near weighless. Amazing! This was one of my favourites of the vertical.
Red
2006 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
93 points
This for me was a bit of a culture shock with 04 and 05 exhibiting that beautiful weithless intensits, '06 was a much bolder and broader wine. Very structured with dark berries and cassis. I liked it and maybe if tasted next to some more opulent Napa Cabs, this would have appeared more elegant.

Flight 2 (5 notes)

Red
2007 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
96 points
Red berries, chocolate, some cassis, dense and opulent in the nose with a great elegant body, this was incredibly long. Unfortunately, the nose had a slightly overripe touch. That overripe touch is also a factor that makes me a bit weary of the aging potential, as in similar wines, I have experienced this to intensify with age.
Red
2008 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

This was the only wine that was quite holding back on the aromatics. needed some time to develop had a good structure but also developed more ripe aromas and the alcohol wasn't as perfectly integrated as in other vintages.
Red
2009 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
95 points
A lovely, cool vintage resulting in a great expression of that weighltess intensity game that Scarecrow is mastering. Cranberry jelly, milk chocolate, just delicious to drink now!
Red
2010 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
95 points
It's funny, but with wines as young as 2019, this for me was the only one that was really too young to drink.

A high potential wine with so much power but the tannin structure was so intense that it needs another 5 years before it really delivers that Scarecrow magic. By then it can be amazing

2011 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Coo, red and purple berries, some floral notes with even a burgundian characteristic. This is great now!

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
95 points
Dark chocolate, black berries, a whiff of espresso in the background, super dense with a great length and here's that weighlessness again. Great wine with some further upward potential.
Red
2013 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
97 points
Black, dark instense fruit, incredibly structured and powerful. Could have benefitted from decanting. Will further improve with time in the bottle.

Red
2014 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
95 points
Cassis, dark fruit, black chocolate with whole hazlenuts. Not as balanced as other vintages, with quite some broad shoulders, I really liked it nevertheless.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
2012 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon Monsieur Étain USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
92 points
Very fruit driven, vanilla, chocolate, relatively sweet, much more along the lines of a typical Napa blend than a Scarecrow. Yet still very tasty.

Red
2012 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon Toto's Opium Dream scene III PNV USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

What an absolute stunner of a wine and for me the wine of the night. Dark chocolate, cassis, licorice, incredibly complex and concentrated. WOW

As the 2012 this was dense, concentrated and intense. Way too young, but also has notes of slightly overripe figs, reminding me a bit of 2007 Scarecrow. I'm not sure where this concoction is headed...

Flight 6 (5 notes)

Red
2015 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
94 points
Red gruit, some dark fruit, despite that hot year it manages to maintain a certain degree of freshness. Some red fruit jelly. To my surprise I had a slight preference for 2014 over 2015.
Red
2016 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
96 points
It shows so much potential, with dense, sweet, dark fruit and beautiful toasted notes. This could also have benefited from decanting, but with some time in the glass it started to show its potential.
Red
2017 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
91 points
Oysters, chalk, surprisingly this had the most sweetness from all the vintages, fairly ripe and ready to drink. This vintage kind of fell out of line with the rest of the vertical.
Red
2018 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
94 points
Dense, opulent, toasted notes, some hazelnut. At the end of a long tasting and such a young wine, assessing the potential development is hard, but I'm quite positive that this will be a classic Scarecrow.
Red
2019 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
96 points
Assessing the potential development of such a young wine is hard, especially after such an intense tasting. But I'm extremely positive on the 2019 Vintage in Napa in general but on this wine in particular. This will have the weightless intensity, with an extra punch of intensity.
