The Bristol - Chicago IL

Introduction

Dan's birthday dinner, so we opened a few good bottles... then a few more.

Flight 1 - Something to Drink as People Arrive (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Laurent-Perrier Champagne Grand Siècle Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
94 points
Disgorged early 2015, this is most likely Iteration 22. Incredibly rich and very opulent with so much orchard fruit and textural brilliance. Slightly mature, but also nicely fresh, there is so much here. A great Champagne.

Flight 2 - Younger Bonneau du Martray Flight (4 notes)

White
2011 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
90 points
In 11/12/13/14 vertical, followed by 06/07/08/10 vertical. This was clearly on the lean side, clearly underripe, but with good enough power and density.

2012 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
92 points
In 11/12/13/14 vertical, followed by 06/07/08/10 vertical. Floral and opulent is every way imaginable, showing peach and ripe apple, yet also balanced and vibrant. Good now.

2013 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
In 11/12/13/14 vertical, followed by 06/07/08/10 vertical. Another 2013 that keeps getting better with more cellar time, this is still in that process of integrating the botrytis, so not yet fully balanced. So much substance and weight, I really look forward to seeing where this emerges at its peak...in 2025? 2028? Later?

2014 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
In 11/12/13/14 vertical, followed by 06/07/08/10 vertical. Slightly reduced start, but not too protruding right now. This is a real powerhouse vintage, showing so much orchard fruit with structural support and density. Good now, I really look forward to trying this again from 2025 forward.

Flight 3 - Mid-Aged Bonneau du Martray Flight (4 notes)

White
2006 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
In 06/07/08/10 vertical, preceded by 11/12/13/14 vertical. Floral, ripe Asian pear and poached pear aromas are nicely spiced. Similar flavors coming across as rich and more savory with far more energy than would be expected in the vintage. Another wonderful performance for this vintage, just slightly overshadowed by the more brilliant 2007 and 2008.

2007 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
95 points
In 06/07/08/10 vertical, preceded by 11/12/13/14 vertical. Floral with apple and lemon zest aromas. Equally bright flavors with excellent intensity and balance, persistent through its long finish. This wine just continues to get better, and clearly has further upside from here.

2008 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
In 06/07/08/10 vertical, preceded by 11/12/13/14 vertical. Lots of apple here, showing both ripe and tart notes, well nuanced with floral and spice hints. So good now, unlikely there is further upside.

2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
flawed
In 06/07/08/10 vertical, preceded by 11/12/13/14 vertical. Maybe this just got lost in the brilliant vertical, but it certainly seemed like another 2010 getting too tired too young. But this is the first time I have had this problem with Bonneau du Martray. Drinkable, but nowhere near the quality of previous bottles.

Flight 4 - Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses Flight (5 notes)

Red
1995 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
In Amoureuses flight, including Groffier 95/05/10. Fully mature black and red cherry with enticing spice aromas and good depth. Time to drink up.

2005 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
95 points
In Amoureuses flight, including Groffier 95/05/10. Opened and double decanted several hours before serving. Great concentration and weight with lots of black cherry and berry, savory spice and roasted meat, finishing with lots of power. Group could not reach consensus on preference between this and the 2010.

In Amoureuses flight, including Groffier 95/05/10. Bright red and black berry aromas and flavors with anise, roasted beef, thyme, black pepper hints coming and going. Bright textures come close to the weightless textures found in the very best of Chambolle. Very good. Group could not reach consensus on preference between this and the 2005.

In Amoureuses flight, alongside Groffier '10. Black cherries and berries throughout with braised meat spice and rare meat. Big and bold, this goes on and on, but never seems to give us 100% of its full potential. By far the most backward of the flight, needing the most further cellar time, despite having been opened 4+ hours prior with an hour in a decanter. I will hold my remaining bottles until 2030 or later.

2012 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
The star in a great Amoureuses flight. Amazingly bright red fruits everywhere with the brilliant weightless textures only found in the greatest wines form Chambolle, making it even brighter and seeming to glide across your tongue, even with its very good weight and density. My first time tasting this wine since the day before it was bottled in 2014.

Flight 5 - Musigny (3 notes)

Red
1995 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
In Musigny flight. I continue to really enjoy good bottles of this wine, despite its surmaturité, which is so odd for the 1995 vintage. This is a very dense, concentrated, and large scaled wine that is actually very well balanced despite its ripeness.

In Musigny flight. Black berries and cherries from start-to-finish with lots of power, yet bright minerality stands out as well. Ripe and balanced at the same time, this is drinking so well now, and should hold well for decades to come.

2002 Joseph Drouhin Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

In Musigny flight. Densely packed black and red cherry with so much concentration and power, yet completely refined and elegant. Brilliant already now, with possible further upside.

Flight 6 - Other Wine (2 notes)

Red
1985 Bonneau du Martray Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
90 points
Served double blind. Fully mature ripe black and red cherry with cooked mushroom and good weight. Enough fruit lingering most of the way through, but then slightly tart at the very end. I did not do very well, thinking it Cote de Nuits 1er Cru from a ripe vintage in the 1970s (thought '79).

Served double blind, I thought this was just a bad wine, but then everybody else pointed out that it was just a bad Bordeaux. In fact, Ken found this in his cellar clean-up, being a bottle he initially Coravin'ed NINE years ago. Basically dead and completely uninteresting.
