Introduction

Tasting with Claude in Auckland

Flight 1 - 2019/2018 1er Cru's (4 notes)

Two great plots with spicy and floral aspects to them, probably due to 100% whole cluster usage. The 2018's both seemed fresher and more ready than the 19s which I believe need a long long time to show their best. Ile des Vergelesses was more intense and powerful, and appeared to have a more liquorice spice character that marked them, while Lavières more floral, juicy and berry-driven. These are elegant and perfumed wines.

2018 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Grippy tannins, fresher and more dense than 2019 currently. Very palate with darker fruits coming through. Good power, elegant and not brooding feel though.

2019 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Very ripe and juicy on the nose. More of a jammy style but still with good balance and acidity. Wild strawberry patch with intense floral notes of peony and violets.
Red
2018 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Again fresher than 2019, very tense on the palate. The intense spiciness is back again similar to 18 vs 19 Lavières, all while remaining elegant and poised. Slightly dryer tannins at the back that don't feel that intrusive.
Red
2019 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
This felt quite earthy and vegetal again, back in the darker fruits spectrum and very elegant here. Finish is structured and very long. This wine feels like it needs a long period of rest.

Flight 2 - Corton-Bressandes Vertical (3 notes)

What a treat to try these three Corton-Bressandes side by side. 2017 is the only one open at the moment, and it's delightful. They are all showing huge power with great restraint, just massive tension and complexity on the palate. A big step up from the already great 1er Cru wines from the previous flight.

Ripe and rich palate, with some balsamic notes. After opening up this is actually quite airy and fresh. Darker fruits with great tension and power. This definitely is holding back a lot and needs time.

Superb balance, with more classic flavours compared to the riper vintages. So floral with an almost candied strawberry note, mixed with forest floor and creates a vivid imagery in your mind. Very subtle, restrained, just delightful! Drinking well currently in my opinion but could get even better in the following years.

Cooler feel again, this time very tight and structured body. Intense and concentrated at this point, it feels a bit unyielding. Tannins and balance are very elegant though so I think this will be fantastic down the line.

Flight 3 - Corton Blanc Vertical (3 notes)

So impressed by this rare white Corton. Enormous amounts of tension and depth here in all three. 2021 and 2020 were special highlights for me with their autolysis notes and fresh orchard fruit feel. I believe these to be a step up above the Corton-Bressandes in terms of emotional quality. Top white burgundy here :)

This is next level. Fantastic freshness and energy in this wine. Yellow orchard fruits, creamy, on the sweeter fruit side. Linear and intense. Note of biscuits and nuttiness similar to autolysis notes in Champagne, almost could be mistaken for a top Jura chardonnay. Minerality and savouriness intertwine wonderfully with the acidity. So much depth and tension here.

Similar yellow stonefruits and autolysis notes as 2021. The body is entirely different though, much more opulent and heady at this point, while keeping all the depth and complexity of 21. Slightly longer too. This will probably turn out really well but way too early now.

Quite a different style from 20/21. Richer and more fat, what I would associate more with typical powerful Burgundy chardonnay. Super super long and great freshness nonetheless. This needs a lot of time.
