5/13/24, 12:05 PM - Give it a year. The mid usually will flesh out, at 18 months still a bit disjointed. This has been so consistent from vineyards bordering prestige.
3/25/24, 4:57 PM - Thnx for note, one left from Château, smuggled overseas, pre pandemic.
3/10/24, 8:03 AM - The 2019 is gone. How does the 2018 compare?
3/10/24, 10:40 AM - Thanks for the prompt reply. 14.1% is no longer seen much in Napa.I’ll might sample a 2015 Arrowood Monte Rosso Cab @$79.95 @K&LMy formative years were at 12.5-13-13.5% re Napa Cabs
3/6/24, 11:25 AM - Agree, especially Day 2 the grapefruit expands
2/18/24, 12:13 PM - Picked up another bottle on my last visit. Will enjoy sooner & later with a bit more maturity. The ‘19 was flashier upfront, I preferred the ‘18 old school tone & perceived depth.
1/10/24, 3:16 PM - Yeah, vintner chose not to cold stabilize. Not sure why not, more “natural”, less labor/time involved? You’d run into it circa 1970’s & 80’s in CA. Crystals usually sink to the bottom & float around. Bottles purchased upright on the shelf. Consumers were alarmed. Have not run into them in many years. Maybe did not want to filter again? With enough time you can rack wine off leaving crystals at bottom of tank. Never cellared white wine long enough in those days & crystals were not of sufficient quantity to compromise corks. Definitely tartrate crystals.
1/22/24, 9:50 AM - I’ll consume my last one soon, not inclined to have the wine age with any disintegrated cork. PS … had no tartrate issues with my 2019 Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay Dundee Hills, started with 4, still have 2.
12/1/23, 12:11 PM - Two reasons re Caymus … 1st Randy Dunn left as the wine maker to realize his dream & stay true to a traditional style. 2nd Robert Parker influencing the modern style. (1990 B.P. - “Before Parker”) My first visit to Caymus tasting was a 1977 Cabernet. I began a relationship trading fruit trees to Charlie for wine, landscape ornamentals to Chuck. They both over traded wine to my benefit. My last vintage was the 1995 for both Cabs. Received SS1982, SS1985, SS1988, 3L bottles for my children’s BDays. The 1985 SS was probably the finest Caymus, & my fave CA Cabernet period, to date. 1990 was more powerful, 1985 was seamless & graceful, 99/100 IMO. Nice update. Really miss those wines. The Estate 1979 @$12 had Rutherford dust, sense of place, what a wine.To add, the Caymus Napa Zinfandels Dunn produced were so excellent. Everything of course had lower alcohol, great balance & gracefully firm structure. 1980 & 1985 especially.
12/1/23, 1:04 PM - Cool!
11/9/23, 11:26 AM - My impression nearly identical … Kab(+) to Spat(-)
10/28/23, 6:50 PM - I’ll agree w/corked as hopefully the issue. TCA hopefully not, because it will only get worse. My Bordeaux experience started with 1979 futures, $10/bottle for Pichon Lalande. Robert Parker halted the “old” Bordeaux style sending the above 1982 to ~$18/bottle, & influenced the ever riper “modern” style. The pendulum is starting to swing back. Flawed wine is way less common. Bordeaux used to be atrocious with Brett, that’s not complexity. I’ll change to NR. Dipping back into Bordeaux after the 2000 vintage, Cheers!
10/28/23, 7:01 PM - Well said, ruined is pretty exaggerated. Influenced so terroir is less indicative.
10/3/23, 3:54 PM - My thought, it was that kind … did not seem like barrel toast. With you completely on the rest, nice note.
7/2/23, 11:52 PM - Love the area. Rivals RRV & DCV, my norm.
6/9/23, 6:03 PM - I’ve been holding off on 2. Any fruit or mid palate expansion as it got some air? Tightness possible or just thin …
6/11/23, 12:26 PM - Appreciate the reply. I’m with your last sentiment x2! I had a stellar 2012 at year 7. I’ll wait till this Fall for #1.
4/30/23, 8:24 AM - Nice note, I’m going to pop 1 of 2
12/31/22, 10:13 AM - Yikes, corrected that, thanks. Cheers!
8/12/22, 1:15 PM - The 2018 Chard has been among the best ever, long time fan. Great last week coincidentally. I had a Chard with issues 2 years ago. I called & they replaced the bottle. Worth a try, family owned/run as you prob know.
6/13/22, 9:56 AM - A mirror of what could have been my review. Eerie, that’s two now …Nicely done!
4/16/22, 10:26 AM - The 2018 had tighter structure right out of the gate. It has really started singing, completely agree, nice post.
4/11/22, 10:54 AM - 6 minimum IMO to 8 years from vintage date for HP. 2012 HP at 8 years was possibly my best CA Pn experience. Faded some but still beautiful at 9. Should have consumed both, really singing, at 8. HP has become more graceful through the years.
4/11/22, 5:39 PM - Yes, the consistency is exemplary, you’ve got good taste! They do their vineyard right.
4/7/22, 3:18 PM - “A beautiful purple dress that betrays her youth. The nose is still fairly closed with notes of red fruits and a very present but not unpleasant wood. It spent 16 months in French and American barrels 40% new. The mouth is powerful with still dry tannins. It is well balanced and will provide pleasure for many years to come. Failing to be able to afford cult wines Martini offers us the chance to drink a real Napa Cabernet at a reasonable price, everything being relative.”I agree … Nice post!
12/26/21, 8:54 AM - Wishing you all the best with a toast to your Zinfandel enjoyment in 2022.
11/16/21, 7:44 AM - How did you find the sweetness/acid balance? My purchase is still pre-arrival. Reviews of fruit intensity is tempting me to get more, killer value.
9/6/21, 5:02 PM - I’d take it if still available? Basically it’s all Zin as the fires in ‘17 prevented the later ripening Alicante & other black varietals. Unique Pagani for sure.
4/26/21, 9:46 PM - Similar sample size for me as well. Here’s hoping 3 of 3 hits these notes!
7/28/20, 6:19 PM - Ha! My only intimate knowledge is with Nadalie Virginia MT & MT+. Drinking for ~45 yrs. but only making Zin for 7yrs. Morgan has a nice touch, new, with an old background. Cheers!
7/25/20, 6:10 PM - Sexagenarian, right there with you, life is too short not drink your good wine. I tend to “slip the shit” first, as my wife likes to say, but none left. Now with COVID-19, I open good, very good & even better. Cheers!P.S. Had a 2016 A. Rafanelli the other night, outstanding.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
