I think this is a great Beaujolais, and a bargain at that. Really nice dark red fruits, including blueberries and cherries. It is medium to full bodied and very ample, with a full mouthfeel and lively acidity.

Very dark ruby core fading to pink with a thin watery rim. Expressive nose of dark raspberry, dark cherry, barnyard and sweet tobacco. Palate is of more dark red fruits and mineral. Full-bodied with grainy tannins, this leads to a medium-length aftertaste of cherry and eucalyptus.

This was the third of my six bottles. The first was tasted two years ago and had much more barnyard funk. The funk seems to have receded (darn it!) and been replaced with more primary dark red fruits. Paired very well with grilled venison and mushroom risotto. Good now, but I will hold my next bottle for a couple years and the last for perhaps six more years.

4/10/24, 6:45 PM - Thank you for your tasting note. I also enjoy Domaine Tempier. For me, I don’t touch these until 10 years from the vintage. From my perspective, they take a long time to age.

Kinda roasty toasty, wonder if its been open a couple of days?

Very bright, almost neon red in the glass. Fruit forward in style. Cherry juice notes, not a lot of structure to it. Struggle with this bottling vs their zins or similarly priced cabs like the Mount Veeder, which for the same vintage had a lot more going on.

Always a good choice for a daily drinker, 2018 was good to Baudry. I prefer the 2018 clos guillot (even at this age) but le grezeaux was great though a bit more muted and less fruit than 2020.
  • JM_MadTown commented:

9/22/23, 6:06 PM - Thanks for your comments on the 2018 Baudry. Honestly, I think the wines from Baudry are more than “daily drinkers”. They are great wines to cellar for a period of time and enjoy. I find them to be very complex considering how inexpensive they are.

During a blind tasting dinner. 3h decant. Very aromatic and savoury wine, lots of bacon, smoke, pepper. I was guessing Northern Rhone Syrah. Excellent showing of this Mourvedre based wine. Unlike many in their youth, this was not overly rustic, they managed the tannins well here.
  • JM_MadTown commented:

7/9/22, 5:49 PM - Thank you for being brave to open such a young wine from this domaine. I don’t usually open a bottle before it’s tenth birthday.

Tonight..not the wine for me....I have liked several other cristoms way more than this one...
Decent dark fruit , with dirt (not earth) component, and a bit of a bitter element...totally disjointed and a Pinot that I just could not enjoy...
I found it almost off putting with the dirt element...
I reserve the right to say I am being harsh tonight...but as it’s my only bottle I will never know...
  • JM_MadTown commented:

7/21/21, 6:06 PM - I am sorry that you had this experience with this wine. I have it in my cellar, but don’t plan to drink it for a number of years. I have had other vintages that were very good. So, perhaps, it could be that the wine is just too young and is disjointed at this early stage.

Nutty, honeyed oxidative notes with really nice pure pear and lemon behind them. Good texture and nice mouthfeel.

I enjoyed this but was disappointed it lacked the excitement I got from the 85 Taylor. Perhaps it’s not quite ready but it was just a bit pedestrian. Drunk by the glass in a restaurant so not sure how long it had been open
  • JM_MadTown commented:

12/12/19, 11:12 AM - Since you mentioned that you had it from an opened bottle at a restaurant, then I think the answer to why the wine was disappointing was exactly that. It had been open for a while. I have had this wine numerous times over the years and it has always been magnificent.

Drunk over three days.
I did not take notes, so just some impressions: I expected a more full bodied, creamy wine. It was rather lean and focused. Good texture, medium length. A bit green and tart sometimes. Quite young. Will it get better? Hmm, don’t have enough experience with Burgundies to tell. Very good wine, but I had expected a bit more for the price tag. 90-91
  • JM_MadTown commented:

11/27/19, 7:25 PM - I appreciate your comments, but I don’t think the wine is young and in consideration of pre-mox experienced by many who cellar white burgundy, this is certainly in its prime drinking window, in my humble opinion.

Crunchy red and black berry, plum, black tea, spice, and tobacco. Showed more positively upon opening, if a bit light weight and lacking concentration. Gains some depth on the palate the second day. Lovely acidity but the finish is dry and medicinal. There's not a lot of lift here, leaving the wine a bit sullen on back end. I would wait to let some of the whole cluster elements (30%) harmonize before pulling the next cork. Revisit in 2-3 years? Certainly not much fun at the moment, if this bottle is representative (86+ pts).

Edit: Comparitively, much sweeter on the 3rd day, with a saline note replacing some of the bitterness on the finish (88+). Still calling hold for now.

Tasted over two days, alongside the 2015 Beaucastel, which offered an incredibly interesting experience. A traditional to the core CdP, featuring lush fruits, raspberry and strawberry (fresh, compote, liqueurs, etc.) pomegranate, dried fig, dates, rhubarb, root vegetables, sun-heated sand and stones, minerals, and an appealing kiss of brett. In balance alcohol (a none-to-common experience with CdP), glycerin texture, with underlying sweet dried fig and Medjool date essences. Open yet poised, showing excellent precision and tension. It might evolve further, yet it delivers great pleasure now. Best served between 63-65 F. An elixir! 94-96.

No formal tasting note- drank at first Passover dinner a few weeks ago with traditional fare- roast brisket of beef, beef meatballs etc.

This wine showed amazing and to my taste is fully mature. Matched very well with the rich meat dishes .

This wine is full bodied and has decadent aromas and flavors - candied red and black fruits, garrigue, herbs, tobacco etc.

I would suggest drinking up as the wine seems very ripe, but wow- what a bottle.

  • JM_MadTown commented:

4/12/17, 4:46 PM - Wow, while I appreciate your review, it is hard for me to accept that a 10 year Beaucastel from a great vintage would be fading at this point. Maybe you had a poor showing. Keep trying!

Poured into a glass and let breathe for about 45 minutes. Dark ruby red in color. An initially reticent nose opens to reveal a lower register notes of dusty red cherries, smoky herbs, leather and soil. A light to medium bodied palate reveals tart & sweet red cherry liquer, new saddle leather and evidence of light tannins on a smoky finish. The wine is still very young and needs time for the olfactory notes and palate to come into balance. 90+ points for potential to improve in the bottle.

Delicious. Celebrated the end of a vicious divorce of 42 months (without a drop of alcohol) with this bottle. Had planed to open a 2009 Geyserville to celebrate last March but the trial dragged on and on. 2011 did the trick. Complex, fine to drink now, fruity, explosion in my nose on the first whiff. Only drank one glass two nights in a row with dinner and family celebration. Alcohol was there. Free at last, free at last written on my ice cream cake.

Where do I start? I was blown away by the 2010 vintage of this wine and it definitely lived up to all the hype out there regarding Lapierre's wines. However, this bottle of the 2011 was really disappointing. There was no fruit. It was all wood and green. Maybe someone can help me out here. Is this typical of this wine in its youth? Could it just need more time? Or is this just an off bottle - an unfortunate side effect of bottling without sulphur? I still have 5 more bottles of this stuff and hope that the others show better than this.
  • JM_MadTown commented:

Perhaps it needs a few months in the celler to settle down. Since this is usually a great wine and others seem to like this vintage, I will try it again soon to see of my opinion changes. I hope so.
