Dinner at Fairview Dining Room. While dinner was quite disappointing this bottle kept up its end of the bargain. One of the most beautiful Rieslings ever made and still drinking in a youthful state. Deep gold in color, this wine was filled with exuberant fruit such as apricots, apples and pears. Superb minerality from its terroir and a little horseradish from the botrytis. Plenty of acidity nicely balances this legendary wine. 50+14+14+9+9=96

Dinner at Bolt. AP#17-96. Very pale gold. In between young and mature as secondary characteristics are just starting to peek out. Very minerally with the beginnings of burnished fruit. A great wine for an unheralded vintage. No wonder Herr Prum held some back for late release. 50+13+14+9+9=95

Anniversary celebration at Fearrington. Light to medium gold in color. Showing more botrytis than Jebsal tonight with strong notes of horseradish, apricots and mirabelles. Great balance. With some time in the glass the Jebsal terroir starts to make itself known. These continue to age at a glacial pace and will be a 100 year wine if we save any for future generations ( I'm doing my part to make sure this doesn't happen! ). 50+14+15+9+9=97

Anniversary celebration at Fearrington. Given 3 hours of decanting time and this seemed to be the sweet spot for this bottle. Very dark ruby in the glass. Very balanced between fruit and tannic structure. Notes of dark chocolate, kirsch, sous-bois and Rainier cherries. A very glyceral mouthfeel. Long finish. Incredible! 50+15+15+10+10=100

Anniversary celebration at Fearrington. Another spectacular bottle of this gem. Light gold in color. Wax and lanolin on the nose and then lightly sweet on the palate. This wine has a beautiful balance to it in two ways - sweet/acid as well as youthful fruit/secondary characteristics. With time the sweetness came to the fore on the palate and the secondary characteristics on the finish. 50+14+15+9.5+9.5=98

Anniversary celebration at Fearrington. Given 1 hour of decanting time. Dark ruby in the glass. Classic Chave minerality and black olives but still tight despite the decanting time. With time in the glass, this opened up. A great wine that has at least another 10-15 years of great drinking for well stored bottles. 50+13.5+13.5+9+9=95

Dinner at Bolt. Similar to previous bottles but somehow elevated to the status of "perfect" on this occasion. Acidity perfectly matched to the sweetness. Even a little of the Jebsal-typical floating fruit sensation starting to pop out on this bottle to give it that little extra something. Amazing with banana bread pudding. 50+15+15+10+10=100

Dinner at Bolt. An ind=credible mix of ripe fruit, wool, lanolin and secondary characteristics. Minerally. Tropical notes of rambutan and pineapple. A subdued sweetness makes this a great dinner wine at this point in it's evolution. Truly a timeless and ageless wine. 50+14+15+9+9.5=97.5

Full of Brand minerality. Rich on the nose and then dry on the palate, along the lines of the '94 Windsbuhl Riesling but not quite as rich on the nose so the contrast when hitting the palate isn't quite as pronounced and shocking. Great seafood wine. 50+13+13+9+9=94

Dark amber in color. One of the most technically complex wines I've ever had as it mixes plenty of Rangen terroir with fruit, spice, sweetness and acidity. As balanced as an elephant successfully walking a tightrope. An amazing wine for the ages. 50+14+15+9.5+9.5=98

Seems to be mature but not at all dried out. Should drink well for another 5-7 years. A very enjoyable wine but although this is made from Chave fruit it would never be confused with a Chave from a taste profile standpoint. 50+12+13+8+8=91

AP#13-02. Many people say that Scheurebe should be drunk young but this has not been my experience with the Scheurebe from Muller Catoir from the HGS era. This spatlese is gorgeous, open and completely full of exuberant life as it enters it's teens. Very tropical with mango, pineapple, papaya & more. A great pleasure today and a great future as well. 50+13+13+9+9=94

Dinner with Steve, Barb & Mom for Dena's Birthday at Black House. Medium gold in color with a very fine bead. This has always showed well but this was the best bottle yet. Completely open for business with a great depth to the apple & pear fruit. Very tart acidity on the endless finish. A stunning bottle of Champagne! 50+15+15+10+10=100

Dinner at Sushi One. Golden in color, this bottle drank like a masterpiece. A very floral nose dominated by rose buds and honeysuckle. An explosively fruity palate with a very long finish featuring butterscotch and lychees. More round than overtly sweet. Young with a long aging possibility. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5=97

Excessive Truffle dinner at home with Alan & Lehna. Orange in color. Rich & fruity flavors of apricots, nectarines and mirabelles. Sweet but not overly so with good acidity. Surprisingly this showed none of the Jebsal typical inner mouth perfume. A great match with the extra aged Gouda we bought at Cezanne in Colmar. 50+13+13+8+8=92

Dinner at Heron's with Alan & Lehna. Ruby with some lightening towards the rim. Mature but not one bit tired. Perfumed nose of everything one would expect in a spectacular aged Piedmont wine. Beautiful palate full of cherries, roses, tar and licorice. Full bodied with a very long finish and fully resolved tannins. This bottle is well worthy of my first perfect score for a red wine. 50+15+15+10+10=100

Dinner at Heron's with Alan & Lehna. Medium yellow in color, this was not the best showing this wine has had by any means. Mostly showing the wool/lanolin side of Chenin Blanc and some adolescence. Dena is very annoyed by a slight metallic taste on the finish and I have to agree that something is not quite right compared to other bottles but that it is still a beauty despite the noted flaws. Bottle variation after 55 years...very understandable. 50+13+13+8+8=92

Dinner at David Rayer's house. I was shocked when this wine was revealed from it's blind tasting mode. So different and inferior to the '96. Not a bad wine but its hard to see the lineage from this to the brilliant '96. Light gold in color and yeasty. Very acidic and lacking depth and refinement. 50+12+12+8+8=90

Dinner at David Rayer's house. AP#13-96. Light gold in color, this wine had a beautiful nose of early secondary development. Loads of minerality. Sinmilar in taste to the Christoffel Jr. wines which is what I guessed as all the wines were served blind tonight. 50+14+14+9+9=96

Ceremonie des Fromages at Bernard Antony. Jean-Francois was surprised to see us order the VT to go with the latter half of the cheeses but discussion led to agreement that it actually made for a great pairing to many of the world class cheeses we were served. Bright gold in the glass. This bottle was showing the Rangen typicity but also loads of yellow/orange fruits - peaches, fresh apricots, mirabelles and oranges. Powerful yet delicate at the same time, a trick usually reserved for the best Rieslings. Excellent acidity washes away the acidity on a very long and expansive finish. Tasting quite young on this occasion. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5=97

Ceremonie des Fromages at Bernard Antony. Dark gold in color and showing impeccable storage like all bottles at this cheese palace! All Rangen, as usual, with the almost "Liqueur de Rangen" that is so typical of this '89. Lots of minerality and peatiness. Lomg & dry on the finish. A classic wine with the early cheese courses. 50+13+14+9+9=95

From 375ml. Opened at the request of a friend who asked me for an opinion on whether to open one of his last bottles now or hold. I'm not sure I have an answer as I'd say get enough to do both! Definitely the next coming of the 1994, this is starting to shed some of its baby fat and show itself. While still primary in many ways this is beginning to show its own character. While the 1994 changes to dry on the palate entry, this wine hits the front of the palate still sweet and then quickly changes to dry in the mouth. A fascinating wine that will be a pleasure to watch over the next 2 decades. 50+14+14+9+9=96

AP#14-96. Dinner with Mom at MJ's, New Bern, NC. Still showing some slight shades of green and even a tiny amount of Prum spritz. Light & delicate with apples and tons of minerality. Still dark in color with no signs of age based on color. Beautifully smooth but still with a nice tannic grip as well. Dark cherries dominate the flavor profile along with chocolate and the finish was nearly endless. Seems to be at peak but with a long window of fine drinking still ahead of it. A classic! 50+13+14+9+9.5=95.5

Beautiful gold color and proof positive that the off bottle a few months back was just that, an off bottle. A wine of vintage above varietal or vineyard ( to some extent on the vine, yard ). Medium to dark amber in the glass, basically how it's been since bottling. The nose jumps out of the glass with a great exuberance, ripe apricots, pineapple, lychee, raisins - all with keeping its peaty Rangen roots. Nicely sweet but plenty of acidity to wash it off the palate and then leave a very long glow of a finish. Still drinking quite young. 50+15+15+10+10=100

Incredibly dark orange in color, I had been dreaming of having this wine again since I had it in 2007, my only bottle at the time. When some became available in 2014 I jumped on it and this is the first to be opened. Concerned that it could not live up to my memories, this quickly changed. Beyond exuberant on the nose with peaches and rainier cherries giving way on the palate to Gewurz typical spices that linger forever on the finish. Rich and concentrated and loaded with very clean botrytis. It's tough to find a flaw in this wine. Boy would it be great with dessert at Thanksgiving! 50+15+15+10+10=100
