This was a much better showing with this bottle than the one I had a few months ago. This was a bit more relaxed, slightly oxidative, but with notable concentration. Blind, I initially thought this was a 2015 Churchill due to their similar profiles and displays of fruit (once revealed). With its delineated linear bead and white/higher-riding yellow fruit, the Cristal was notably fuller than the Churchill. With air, it became more complex, which is where the subtle oxidative notes started to percolate.

I favor the 2013 Cristal (and 2008, though that has been a bit hit/miss for me - though a 2008 we also had during this tasting was very compelling). The 2015 will likely be a very good wine after a few more years in bottle, but I suspect it will never be a top reflection of the brand.

Artisans of Sardinia - April 2024 (London): Just entering its drinking window and showing really well if still in its infancy. Old leather, mulberry and a light mocha note on the nose and then plenty vibrant fruit, acidity and tannin on the palate. Loads of energy here and it will evolve beautiful for 10-15 years

2013 Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant Extra Brut Chardonnay
May 2022 disgorgement. 100% Chardonnay from 60-80 year old vines in Cramant from a single plot called Bourron du Levant. 2 grams of dosage, farmed biodynamic with just about 8 years on the lees. I've been drinking this cuvee since the 2008 vintage and I consistently like it. It's become expensive but we were able to find these for $110 recently and we grabbed a bunch of it across a few guys to take advantage of the deep discount. Opened yesterday, took the remnants home stuffed under a stopper to maintain the C02. Getting a real good taste and look at the wine tonight at a perfect temp of just lightly cool. This vintage represents what I would call 'class'. There is a richness here that has a countering element of what I thought of as 'weightless'. god, that sounds stuffy and cliche so forgive my use of the term but when I taste this stuff, there is fruit intensity without feeling heavy. Aromatics of lees and cardamon. The palate a mix of lemon, orange and apple, finishing with lime and some honey that is starting to frame the finish. Kinda reminds me of White Burgundy, with the flavor profile that has a decadence yet the balance and acidity woven through the wine. On the final few sips, some of the chalk finally peeks through and yet it's another supporting piece to the wine, one that seems already well-knitted together and I bet with another 3-4 years this smooths out even more and really becomes a head turner. Delicious.

Any thoughts on 2012 vs 2013 of the Levant? I loved the 2009 and 2011 and considering a purchase of one of the newer vintages. I can get the 2012 for 15% cheaper than 2013, but the latter's reviews seem a bit stronger.

Haven't tried this wine before, and was really looking forward to it given its reputation, but it seemed slightly flat (NB - pretty sure it wasn't faulty). Pleasant bitter orange notes with garrigue undertones, elegant mouthfeel, but just seemed a touch dilute; I'd prefer either something with more flavour intensity, like Tempier, or a properly dark rose from Spain or Italy.

Amazingly pale in colour - not the only thing about this wine that reminds me of Nebbiolo. Really pure, crystalline Pinot with strawberry on the nose and sour cherry on the palate. Acidity is too noticeable to merit a higher score at this stage, but we all enjoyed this tonight.

Pretty, translucent cherry-red. Delicate on the nose, with some green foliage and some faint florality, like smelling the wrong part of a bunch of roses. More impact on the neat, sleek palate, but it's mostly bitterness, though there's some sweet fruit underneath; it could only be Italian. I liked this, but I wanted more from it.

Carignan and on and on (Piccolino): This was a complete outlier, in the context of tonight's line-up, Carignan generally, perhaps even out of all the wines I've drunk - but very successful with it. An incredible pale colour, such that it looked infused rather than extracted. So pretty and, indeed, sleek and racy on the nose, which reminded me of peach ice tea done just right. Very complex and elegant on the palate: exotic soap, blackcurrant, violets, pink grapefruit, orange peel. Silky smooth but with a crisp bite too, the whole package effortlessly seasoned with an air of mystery.

Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy, Pommard (The Fat Butcher, Stellenbosch): (Tasted Blind): A light crimson colour towards a red-orange rim. A deep nose that shows some evolution, with notes of damp forest floor, forest fruit, and a feral, savoury quality. The brooding palate has a dense core, penetrating with plenty of fruit and a gravelly tannic frame that is muscular in shape. With great fruit concentration (plenty of wild strawberry), this is a classy Grand Cru with pedigree, charm, velvet softness and a bracing mineral-edged acidity keeping it upright. Robust yet elegant, layered and developing nicely. It closes with a sinewy feel to it. Fabulous!

Uncorked and tasted about an hour before leaving, and it was singing, so I just put the cork back in and we drank it about 4 hours later. Flat out amazing....and at 70 years, wow. The nose is very complex, offering a melange of black cherry, dried strawberry, mulled spices, anise, red currants and blood orange notes. The palate is medium plus bodied, dark cherry, dried strawberries, crushed rock, blood orange and citrus peel, soft fine grained tannins, and very long and silky finish. Simply beautiful. This was a sheer delight to drink and just ponder. Pristine bottles like this can hang on for another decade at least. Guess we found that Barolo sweet spot afterall :).

First of 3 (from 2 different lots, each about $115-120, both about 6 months ago), 2 bottles from cellerage operation #3, the other from an auction at the big box wine store. I’ve written extensive notes, pressing up against the character limit, for bottles from the ‘06, ‘07, ‘09 and ‘13 vintages (it’s not my most noble aspiration, but I’m slowly making my through Flac’s 21st century oeuvre, while likely omitting ‘02, ‘03 and ‘14), and I’m going to be lazy here and say that the compositional aspects and quality are all far more similar than different vintages, making allowances for relative youthfulness or lack thereof of those vintages, as was true here, subject to a slight note of booziness which mostly but not completely burned off with air. Among premium wines in my semi-regular carte, I group this with the QC flagship and Ovid Proprietary Red in terms of distinctiveness, quality and similarity from vintage to vintage such that I feel confident that I could pick each out among other relatively similar competing cuvees in a way I couldn’t with most of my quaffs. With all that said, I note here that, like most vintages other than the ‘07, this still very much needs close to 3 hours to hit a balanced groove and for the fierce tannins and acidity to let the fruit (red and black cherries, dark berries, currants and plums) really shine through. This was also the first Flac that made it to a night 3 for me, since I was out to dinner with a friend on night #2, and it hit a degree of mellowness I’d never experienced in this bottling. This additional aeration gave this bottle an enhanced degree of integration and elegance, although at the cost of some intensity and persistence, so I’d rate this a 96-97 on night #1, 95+ on night #3. That said, unlike so many other Tuscans from this quality but hot vintage, I think that this is only beginning to find its best footing and is likely to have an easy 8-10 years of optimal drinking left if reasonably stored. Really great with spicy chicken-basil-feta orzo, but on night #3 in particular, quite wonderful on its own. Vintage after vintage, this bottling plants a flag in the ground for sangio, at least in the Tuscan climes, to be considered among the world’s great wine grapes. And while I’m respectful of the opinions of others, as I’m unlikely to find out for myself, it’s hard for me to imagine that the quality difference for Soldera over Flac would make the former a more regular choice for me, even if price weren’t an issue, as Harlan wouldn’t be over the aforementioned, and much beloved, Ovid.

9/24/23, 2:34 PM - Lovely note, and interested to read your thoughts. I wanted to say, though, that you shouldn't skip the 2014 - it was a try of that vintage a couple of years ago that turned me into a Flacc fan! Very elegant and clean, rather than thin.

  • NickA commented:

9/25/23, 7:04 AM - I brought the '06 to a big Tuscan lunch earlier this year and it was one of the best wines, for sure.

I think 2016 is well worth the premium based on the time I tried, but not sure about 2019.

Quite different from the previous bottle, much fresher this time.

Very nicely developed nose, tons of buttery brioche and ripe yellow apples. Moderately lively mousse. Fresh acidity and quite full body, mature yellow fruits.

Very enjoyable! Served with cured ham which worked very well.

Monday night Syrah (Hawksmoor Borough): Decanted for around 30 minutes. Preceded by a 50% whole bunch Lismore, and this wine was that bit wilder and more idiosyncratic, without being difficult to enjoy or giving the feeling that it (or the winemaker) was trying too hard. Classic and nicely delineated notes of hedgerow fruit, brine and pepper, pleasingly structured, and again effortlessly drinkable (like the Lismore, it's 12.5%).

100% Sangiovese, matured in barrique (1/3 new). That winemaking decision appears to have paid off in spades in this cooler 2014 vintage - which I wouldn't have expected, to be honest - as the wine led with its wonderful freshness, but married that to excellent depth and concentration... and there was no flavour of new oak. Unpretentious, fruit-driven, and a joy to drink.

Intense on the nose, with some menthol, and more and more lift and florality with time in the glass. Subtle and elegant on the palate, and plenty of juicy red fruit. This was one of tonight's less powerful and demonstrative reds, and would probably have been even more appreciated if shared between 2-4 people over a longer period of time.

2013 Thymiopoulos Rosé de Xinomavro (Late Release) Macedonia
12/5/2022 - forceberry wrote:

Although Thymiopoulos has a "Rosé de Xinomavro" in their range, this 2013 is a completely different beast to their normal rosé aged in stainless steel, as this sophomore vintage is the most recent release. The wine is made with late-harvested (10th of October) Xinomavro grapes from a single vineyard planted 26 years ago on a northeastern slope, macerated with the skins for 8-10 hours and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Then the wine is aged for 4 years in 2nd use French demi-muids of 500 liters, followed by blending, bottling and aging for another 5 years in the winery's cellars before release. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Very slightly hazy seared salmon color. Ripe, sweet-toned and very complex nose with layered aromas of orange marmalade and stewed rose hips, some tomato stalk tones, a little bit of creamy oak, light sweet notes of apple sauce and apricot jam, a hint of savory wood spice, a touch of strawberry and an oxidative whiff of nuttiness. The wine feels firm and somewhat concentrated by the age with a medium-to-moderately full body and complex, dry and very intense flavors of crunchy cranberries and fresh red apples, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of gravelly minerality, light sweeter notes of strawberry jam, an oxidative hint of caramel and a touch of evolved smoky character. The high acidity lends the wine great sense of structure and energy by making the wine come across as quite airy despite the somewhat concentrated overall feel. A subtle tug of tannins on the gums adds to the sense of firmness. The finish is dry, juicy and subtly grippy with a very long and complex aftertaste of ripe strawberries, some oxidative caramel tones, a little bit of bruised apple, light orange marmalade tones, a hint of nutty wood and a faint touch of developed smoky character.

Another fantastic vintage of Thymiopoulos's rosé. This feels slightly less evolved and not just as complex as the debut vintage, 2007, but instead this one shows a bit more freshness and finesse, coming very slightly lighter on its feet. Nevertheless, the style has remained more or less unchanged and the only difference is just normal vintage variation (I assume). Just as previously, I must say this might be the closest thing to López de Heredia Tondonia Rosado; and what's remarkable is that this is not an old school Rioja Rosado, but instead a rosé from Greece - not really a country one associates with distinctive rosés! I'm not really a rosé guy myself, but this is in my books not only one of the greatest rosé wines in the world, but also one of the best Greek wines out there. Outrageous value at 30€. An extraordinary wine, very highly recommended.

This was in an excellent place tonight. A so called seamless wine. Dark rich aromas of blackberries, expresso, and peppercorns. Textually smooth and rich with a pretty underlying frame giving nice lift. The fruit matches the structure perfectly. Pure deep and delicious black fruits with nice spicy elements throughout. Drink or hold. One of the best wines of year, but then again it’s only February…

Vivid deep crimson colour. The nose is direct, focussed and brimming with blackberry and crisp red apples. Very fine palate with more gorgeous dark fruits running through it. Limestone structure that speaks to the ages with its stature and chalky presence. Precocious at present but will be fat and ravishing in 5 years. Top class wine.

A slightly odd experience. The first half of the bottle was clumsy and lacked definition, and I feared heat damage (given the excellent reviews, this seemed more like a bad bottle than a bad wine). I haven't experienced that sort of issue clearing up with air, but that's exactly what happened, and the final glasses were, whilst still fairly opulent, bright with cassis and revealed a smoky, mineral edge and a touch of sous bois. A good Burg for steak, but it sadly crushed my wife's halibut (even though it had a red wine sauce).

This is a very good wine, quite surprising on the freshness, nice fruit and balance. Nice drink but also quite one dimensional. You can find better for half the price

Brilliant, glittering orange-crimson - no pink here! Just slightly oxidised, adding complexity, but the long ageing has actually brought the wine together as a seamless, delicious whole. Rhubarb and custard sweets, beeswax, dried roses, tomato stalk and blackcurrant leaf... bittersweet and palate-exploding. Long, mealy, mouthwatering finish. Why did I only buy a single bottle of this?!
  • NickA commented:

1/30/23, 6:58 AM - Thanks! Yes, it was chilled, but not overly so - chilled it in the fridge, then removed the bottle around 15 mins before dinner. I would guess it showed best at around 10-12C - not so expressive when straight out the fridge, but the end of the bottle was less charming.

Robert Rolls Burgundy lunch 2023 (St John): Magnum. Outstandingly fresh, bright and exciting Pinot, with delicacy and depth of flavour, and some sensuous, floral aspects. Despite the large bottle, we drank this very quickly. I'd say this is the best non-Cote d'Or red Burg I've tried.

The 2019 Chateau Montrose is magnificent. It is a 100 point effort, in the heritage of those legendary 1989-1990 Montrose vintages, when it was battling with the likes of Haut Brion, La Mission, Lynch Bages, and numerous others as the greatest wine on the planet. Thirty-plus years later, Chateau Montrose may be the "greatest" wine on the planet. And I'm not just talking about the 2019 vintage. I'm willing to listen to anyone who can come up with a more stellar record of excellence in the past 23 years than Chateau Montrose, and I won't disagree with you, because this is all, in the end, completely subjective. There have been numerous superstars since 2000: Pichon Baron, Ducru Beaucaillou, Giscours, Leoville Barton, Calon Segur, and numerous others. Honestly, I can't think of an estate that has excelled more consistently than Chateau Montrose. Along with Pichon Baron, I ranked it at the top of my second growth classification of the 2022 Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts / Ian Amstad Reclassification of the Wines of Bordeaux. This 2019 Montrose is stunning. It smoothed out, as you would expect a great Bordeaux to do, over the course of a three hour dinner. The alcohol is 14.5%, but there is zero intrusion. When I drank the first sip or two or three I worried about the heat, but very quickly it was irrelevant. For the rest of the bottle the alcohol smoothed out, and was non-existent. It is defined by its balance: Stunning fresh Maine blueberries on the palate, velvety New England summer flowers on the nose. Not sure about the oak percentages, etc., but whatever the percentages are, they nailed it perfectly. The beauty of this wine is how it matches all the positives and negatives of modern winemaking with all of the greatness of the past. In the end, this is a "classically styled" St. Estephe. It is Bordeaux, circa 2023, at its best: The greatness of 1980s Bordeaux matched with modern winemaking excellence, a nod to past and present. Nice acidity, this wine will path along the obligatory "drink now and for the next 50 years." There will undoubtedly be a five year "awkward period," (3-5 years?, 5-7 years? I dunno, who cares), but drink this wine now (with a VERY hearty meal), or over the next 30-50 years. This wine is immense. It is a stunner. It rivals the greatest Montrose vintages ever, 1989-1990. This is a 100 point wine.

Edit: Note on the color.
In posturing that Montrose eclipse of my BWE lap top scene, AKR, I was attempting an AKR-like photographic capture of the true hue of this St. Estephe behemoth. There's a lot going on in that picture. There is the midnight black core, leading almost suddenly to the dawn of purple/ruby at the rim. If it were a Crayolla color, how would we describe it? "Montrose Purple?" Surely a color of nature that exists nowhere else In the solar system (I can't speak for the rest of the galaxy, let alone the universe), other than that plot of land in the northern Medoc, France, in this small sliver of time. How lucky we are! A picture says a thousand words. Stunning. Beautiful, magnificent. Like the planet Earth dawning into another day. In vino veritas.

Taste of Autumn at Helene Darroze (Helene Darroze): Did exactly what was required of it, being textbook Claret. Plenty of graphite, a touch of smoke, lots of dark fruit and a pleasing elegance despite the concentration. I'm sure there are dozens of better value Bordeau wines, but I did enjoy this.

It never disappoints! Hints of red fruit are accompanied by tertiary notes such as wet leaves, sous bois, coffee, toast. Great structure in the mouth with soft (but still dusty) tannins and fresh acidity supporting mid-palate weight of remaining sweet fruit. Balanced, integrated, and quite persistent. Perhaps past its best days given the very limited fruity notes, but great experience overall. Drink.

Savoury nose, bright acidity, red fruit, tangy finish. A tastefully old-fashioned Bordeaux that married beautifully with my roast lamb... but can't see any point in paying over £100 for this vintage when you could get a less prestigious chateau from a better vintage for a lot less money, and drink better. Neal Martin's note sums it up well: "It perhaps just lacks the flair and precision of Pichon-Barons from the top drawer. You might describe the 2011 as a serviceable vintage for medium-term consumption."

Pretty disappointed with this, the nose has only a small hint of leather and mushroom.
Fruit is almost non existent.
Tannic still rough and loud for a 18 year old, not smooth on the tongue.
Perhaps it has went over the peak and accelerating downhill.

Pale lemon in the glass with persistent mousse throughtout the 30 minutes it took me to smash this. Bright nose showing tones of citrus fruit and rind, peach, white flowers, splashes of brioche. Medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and zippy acidity. So easy to drink and so persistent throughout. Can't wait to see what else is coming from this producer.

Took a chance on this as I knew 2014 is an early-drinking vintage; boy did that turn out to be correct, as this bottle was completely ready (didn't really needs its brief decant), and in fact didn't quite have the stuffing to deal with our lamb pie with Middle Eastern spicing. Silky and elegant, red-fruited and beautifully floral... sounds great, but it didn't have enough about it to grab the drinker's attention. Perhaps it would have been better to drink younger, with more grip, or older, with more tertiary development?

One sip and it’s old home night. There’s a familiarity. Drinking Ridge wine from this site for over 30 years, and it’s instantly recognizable. The little bit of succulence to the fruit, the oak spice, and touch of butter, and the measured concentration speak to the Ridge execution of this Alexander Valley site. Overall I don’t see this as a benchmark or standout version of Geyserville, but it’s completely solid, and presents a classic version of the wine. I will be completely happy drinking it for years to come.
