April 23, 2022 - Probably the best value Bourbon on the market if you’re getting it for the under $25 retail price.

September 21, 2019 - Damn tasty for the price. Good mouthfeel. Extra rye is noticable but works well here. No crazy complexity and the finish is short. But who cares at this price? Will be a standard weekday bourbon for me.

June 16, 2019 - The standard bottling, and while nothing crazy it’s always a solid pour. Love the fact it’s higher proof, good spice and caramel, clearly still Turkey.

November 25, 2018 - Did a side by side with the 2002 Russell's Reserve and even at a fraction of the price, it held its own.

    Color: pale copper

Nose: creme brulee, peanut, wood varnish, baking spice, haagen daaz

Palate: charred brown sugar, red hots, tannic oak

    Finish: medium long

January 27, 2016 - [Final draft after tasting and emptying a bottle between July 9th of 2015 and January 27th of 2016.]

This is the star of my video on why to wait for a bourbon to open.
And in this video it beats the Buffalo Trace.

The rating is contingent upon allowing the whisky plenty of time to settle and integrate in the glass. For it to really show itself, leave in the glass for at least 90 minutes before consumption.

Pretty dry. Definitely a few notches below it's "older brother", the Rare Breed but a bit more easily drinkable. The solvent note on the nose takes a few days after opening to develop into shoe polish. This indeed tastes like a diluted version of the Rare Breed which robs it of some of its power, balance and profundity. Incidentally, it is for just this reason that I unrecommend adding water into your dram of the Rare Breed. It tends to make it end up tasting like this 101. Where the Rare Breed is darker, more brooding, even a bit beefy, this has more of a hay or even a floral side next to the tobacco, so that it represents the haystack in the barn, whereas the Rare Breed is the actual animal.

Even as it is, an incredible value at the less than 25 € I got a full 1 L bottle for ! If you normalize with respect to both volume and abv, this is only a good 60% of the price I paid for the Rare Breed. But honestly, I would still go for that one nevertheless. And I also predict that I won't buy this 101 again.

7/15/2015: Cheap whiskey comparison with Bushmills Black Bush shows that I prefer the Bushmills Black Bush as a cheap undemanding sipper to this one because it is easier to drink. This here, being above 50% abv, demands an amount of attention that isn't quite justified by the experience.
