January 14, 2022 - 2019 Visit to Cromwell (Central Otago, NZ): I served the two 2001 Charmes double blind as a pair. A much more dark fruited bouquet with damp peaty black soil, almost a Piemontese creosote element and cloves and then a surprising, pure top note of violets and other dark florals. (I asked the winemakers whether they detected any brettanomyces here, but none did). In the mouth, meaty, powerful, with some Gevrey animale. Also, brilliant, sparkling acidity. Suave, very cultured tannins. Huge scale and concentration but all in proportion. The winemakers agreed and – even though none would make a 100% new oak pinot noir or otherwise in this style – almost all preferred it over the excellent Geantet-Pansiot. “There’s a clarity here – a crystalline focus”, said Brian. I would expect the Dugat-Py to drink in this style until at least 2040.

December 18, 2021 - I felt there was a faint cork taint on the nose. The palate was massive, (over) extracted for me. Others felt there was no taint. If there was no taint and I had to score it would be low as this simply wasn't to my liking during an evening of grand wines it was the only bottle that didn't get drunk.

August 31, 2021 - Poured into a decanter to serve. Nose exhibits oak spice, cherries, wild berries, meat, game and herbs. Palate is very deep and power with extracted fruit and spice. Classic Dugat PY that has come around with time. Masculine and bold but expressive.

April 28, 2020 - Absolutely spectacular. After reading notes I seem to have been lucky to have gotten a great bottle (shocking, BV in burgundy....).

Just spectacular nose of roses, licorice, a bag full of lavender, and a hint of violets. Breathtakingly fresh and reminiscent of 1972 Vogue Musigny when it was about 25 years old. The palate was a harmony of seamless aromatics cascading to a good one minute finish. The texture was, for my palate, perfect for burgundy, light on its feet (although this is NOT a light wine, but that's redundant given it's Dugat) giving an elegance of perfumed pinot fruit and asian spices with just a hint of what I call "Red" (if you remember the frozen popsicles that were tubes of color as a kid, red was a favorite).

Stunning. At the table I whipped out my phone and bought more online. Give it an hour to open up but right out of the gates this was special.

February 1, 2019 - Acker 2019/02 (Vaucluse): Not much floral or fresh fruit nose left, and the palate is flat. 88
