April 4, 2024 - Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): Beautifully nutty nose displaying dry yellow and red fruit, dry fig, dry peach, candied orange peel, light caramel, toffee, marzipan and earth. Fully integrated palate, generous sweet dry yellow fruit, rich yet very fluid, super strong acidity, earthy mineral, and a long generous slightly dry sweet yellow fruit driven finish with toffee at the end. This displays strong acidity. Drinking beautifully.

December 1, 2023 - Beautiful Madeira. Decanted for a week but it reached its peak after 10 days. Lovely notes of dried fruit, raisins and prunes , some nuttiness and brown sugar or light caramel. Really long finish. On the dry side with lovely acidity.

July 2, 2023 - A little more dry than I expected. Slightly sweet with notes of brown sugar, honey, citrus and a pervasive nuttiness, somewhat walnut in character. The nuttiness becomes more dominant through the long finish.

June 27, 2023 - Musty and surprisingly sweet out of the bottle. Sat in the decanter for 4 days and the wine transformed. What a rich nose of Italian prunes, raisins, dried apricots, toffee, molasses, sticky caramel pudding, and fruitcake, but at the same time, in the background, is plenty of bright lemon aromas, almost Chablis-like. It’s a fascinating nose.

The wine enters medium sweet, rather rich, but after a second the acidity comes zapping me right in the tongue. The flavors are simultaneously rich, decadent, voluptuous, caramel, toffee, fruitcake, beurre noisette, but also lemonade, bright fresh oranges, lemon oil, grapefruit pith. I’ve never had anything like this before. The more I drink this, the less sweet and the more high acid this becomes. Reminds me in a weird way of young Kabinett Riesling, in which the sweetness balances out the sweetness perfectly. Such a unique wine…amazing to drink. Side note- an amazing pairing with umeboshi rice balls.

April 23, 2023 - Pale blonde caramel color. Very approachable for a Sercial as it has plenty of acid but very gentle on your tongue. Faint VA on nose. I taste the brown butter along with some light smoke, walnut and hazelnut. Complex brown sugar as well. Easy to drink, less complex than some, but very good to drink.
Additional note from July 2023: last glass and definitely filled out nicely. The months of air did improve this. Warning - it has a remarkable amount of sediment for a Madeira, so better to decant this when first opened so you don’t have to chew your way through at the end.
