Community Tasting Notes 4

March 27, 2023 - Straight out of the bottle and it's a joyous mouthful. Intense purple in colour, an assertive and attractive nose of berry jam and smoke, and a palate that balances fine to medium grained tannins with copious fruit and refreshing acidity. Good with fried poulet a vinaigre, great with creamy Brebirousse cheese.

January 28, 2023 - Notes very similar to my last bottle, a month ago. Challenging but rewarding.

January 6, 2023 - Opaque dark purple. The nose slightly less expressive than I remembered, but on the palate it bursts into action, complex and powerful. It seems more monolithic than last time - like that black slab on the moon in Kubrick's 2001 - with dark brambly fruit, billows of smoke, and graphite (pencil shavings) in the flavours and texture of the finish. Somewhat intimidating, but I'm enjoying the face off.

June 2, 2021 - Opaque, dark purple. A nose of 4B pencils. On the palate an astonishingly energetic mouthful: a simmering cauldron of blackberry and plum, with treacly notes on the long finish. And someone has connected jump leads to my glass. Wonderfully structured but hard to say where it's coming from: both tannins and acidity seem restrained. So, fruit and alcohol, perhaps. Whatever, I don't feel the need to comment on it being well-balanced: as soon as it touches the lips it immediately transcends such judgements. All I am aware of is pleasure and a little awe. Certainly the best Pic St Loup I've ever had, and also the best red wine I've had this year. A find! 85% Syrah, 15% Grenache. 14.5%, cork.
