April 28, 2024 - Dinner at Spago Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills, CA): This non-vintage fortified digestif carries a lot identifier of L21/211/312. Deep garnet in color, it is effusive of dark plums, candied orange peel, cardamom, juniper, clove and bay leaf. Full-bodied, viscous, moderately tannic and quite sweet, it has just the right amount of vibrant acidity to offset the sugar. The alcohol (16%) stays in check when served close to cellar temperature, making for a beautifully balanced dessert wine with good mid-palate density and an impressively long finish. Drink now-2040.

November 9, 2023 - Blackberry and herbs on the nose. On the palate, prune, blackberry, quinine, and various herbal notes - anise, cinnamon, etc., with enough acidity and bitterness to offset noticeable sweetness; tannins help keep it interesting. This makes a pleasant dessert wine, and it was a very good value at about $40.

August 15, 2022 - Excellent Chinato. My bottle was clearly young and the Barolo profile was still quite apparent. Mostly showing cherries, roses, anise, cinnamon, espresso, dark chocolate, orange peel.... The tannins were still strong and the wine would likely soften and become a bit more lush over a decade or 2. Unfortunately I could not find any evidence of when the bottle was made, or what vintages were in it.

I am nearly 2 years deep into my slow exploration of Chinato. This is now the 7th Chinato overall including Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Chinato, so 6th Barolo Chinato. This was in the upper half of those that I have had and was well worth the $70 per 500ml.

September 11, 2018 - Very Christmasy with all kinds of spices - like mulled wine.

February 2, 2018 - Damilano Single Vineyards (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): This is a change for sure from the regular barolos and I imagine the score reflects that this is a different animal altogether from a standard wine, but it's actually pretty nice. Think mulled wine but not really heated. Juniper and ginger and a bazillion other random herbs and spices. They prefer not to say fortified but instead something like supplemented. Only 16% which is not too crazy for an after dinner sipper. Very easy and I found myself quite enjoying it. For one person in our party it was a candidate for WOTN just given how different it was.
