August 2, 2017 - Salon, Hillside Select Vertical, ZH, Bernabeleva (Our home): This took some time to open up. The last sips were the best. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is nice with cassis, toast, and cedar. Perhaps a bit of graphite. On the palate, this is juicy with firm tannins. It comes across as seamless to me. Cassis with an underlying char. One person thought the finish was bitter, but I did not. Certainly not an all time great Shafer, it is a fantastic wine. Needs a while to hit maturity and then should have a long life.

June 3, 2017 - Nice nose, great flavor but not as good as other vintages I have had. Might consider it at its best. Slight, oh so slight, amber starting to show on the edges. Loved the wine but don't feel it lived up to its other vintages.

June 3, 2017 - Popped and poured. Likely this vintage was either less than others or this wine needs at least another decade before it comes out. Ultra jammy with little balance this wine just left me feeling it was not Shafer's best effort. Or, on the other hand, we have all been spoiled by prior years great success and this one was just average. Time will tell.

May 6, 2017 - On pnp gave off blackberries smoke and some forest floor. Like others have pointed out this is not your typical ripe lush HSS. 06's are average at best in my opinion. Still juicy in the mouth with a bit of energy left and well integrated tannins. This was a good wine but not HSS worthy. Don't let this be your only Hillside Select bottle. Had this next to 09 Solari and this held up but was not as good.

March 25, 2017 - From magnum. Double decanted 8 hours ahead. Showing great at this time. Not the biggest HSS, but really balanced and supple.
