October 14, 2022 - A bit silly of me to have 6 bottles of these left and to have not opened one in over 10 years! Whoops. And this time no formal notes taken as it was brought to a friend's house. But this was drinking beautifully mature, probably on the back end of its evolution. All the notes were tertiary in character, with lots of soil and forest floor notes, just slight bits of berry, and most all of the tannins fully resolved on the finish. There is still some acid present as well, holding things together nicely. Really complete and drinking like a finely aged Oregon Pinot should. The bottle was enjoyed by all and I am still glad I have the bottles left that I do, but I think I'll be working my way through the remaining five in the next few years.

January 29, 2014 - Medium plus red, long legs. Nose of cherry, clove, cinnamon, forest green, lime zest. Mature acids, fuller body, more cherry essence and grilled pomegranate. I don't get the "hot" sense of others, drinking at or near peak.

July 13, 2013 - Oregon: Young vs. old vine tasting & the consumption of Hank, a Scottish Highland steer (Paul's house): Pretty nice and balanced aromas, offering nice spicy acidity, a slight funky earthiness, and overall quite pleasing notes. The palate enters with initial intense, vibrant bright red fruit, spice, and an intense tannic attack. Soft and tart, too though. Good spiciness on the finish, with lean young profile. Huge tannins and acid on the finish. Grippy as hell, and really tight. This definitely is a wine that can (and should) see considerable age. 90+

No real surprise on the reveal on this wine. And yes, this is young vines. It was drinking similarly to the last time I had it last year.

March 7, 2013 - Farewell to Josh - the burbs have him now. (L'Artusi Restaurant, West Village, Manhattan): Brought by Dan Rinke - the winemaker at Johan. Nose of red spice, crunchy fruit, cinnamon, a slight bit of heat, red fruits: strawberry and raspberry. Silky entry with more red spice. Gentle and pretty with creamy and deep fruit. Again a touch of heat. towards the end. Classic pinot - Thanks Dan! Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/6 = 15/20.

March 7, 2013 - Sending Josh off to the 'burbs (l'Artusi, NYC): Blood ruby. Nose is immediately a little hot, but it is also nicely perfumed. Fairly classic red fruit. The palate is feminine and refined, very nice actually with good texture and nice sweetness to the red fruit. The palate is definitely better than the nose. OK length, not bad. A nice bottle of wine. (Brought by Dan Rinke, winemaker at Johan Vineyards -- thanks, Dan!)
