2005 Château Montrose

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

89 Points

Saturday, October 1, 2022 - Cigar box, cherries, and dried herbs on the nose. Well structured, still tannic, and a touch hot. On the palate, there’s some dusty graphite and dusky fruit, but not a heck of a lot else going on. Several hours of air softened the wine, gave it more finesse, roundness, and subtle sweetness; much more enjoyable! It’s unquestionably a lovely wine, but this bottle was not showing its best.

Think this needs another few years.

But I have had a dud. Not sure if you bought at release. I bought all of mine second hand, from the best high end stores, they have been amazing, I bougt a couple in a more questionable manner, not great. I hope with great provenance, this rocks. Thanks for the note..

    10/4/2022 8:00:00 AM - @Purple Tooth, I have 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 Montrose, one of my favorite wines and most collected. I cannot afford the 1990. If you want to gift one, I'm happy. I agree 2008 is good, 2005 kills it in my opinion. 2003 is better than 2000 IMO and slightly better than 2005.
I think 2005 Montrose is a great wine. I think 09, 10, and 16 will be stellar, just really young. Have not sampled the 2018 or 2019. But we will agree to diagree on the 2005. But with all I know about Montrose post 2000 I will gladly drink the 2005

10/4/2022 9:06:00 AM - Hendmo- My last Monrose note was a 2004, took it on vacation with me a few montsh ago. 93 pts. I remember it being in a very good spot. 2006 is good. I prefer the 2004 and 2008 to it (I agree 2008 is a sleeper) but a good wine. 04 and 06 could use an hour or o decant. I like older wines but not sure these wines imrove too much with many more years of age. I love Montrose, between that and Ducru are my go to. So I will admt I usually have rose colored galsses on as stylistically, I love them! But if you have these, especialy multiples, I would crack on open.
