Tuesday, March 28, 2023 - 2 years since my last bottle, and similar to other 2013 BdM this is drinking differently in its youth than any BdM vintage I have had in the last 20 years.
This is aromatically fairly muted, oak pretty well integrated, restrained on the palate but not closed in my eyes. Am getting this sense of fairly well concentrated small berries here. None of the exuberance and explosive aromatics we often get in young Brunello. I can see this lasting potentially a long time, without picking any of the oxidative notes we so often get with older BdM since the late 90s, indeed perhaps similar to 70s/80s vintages of BdMs in style. At the same time am still not sure this will ever be a great wine. Reminds me also of the 2013 Mazzei Gran Selezione, a Sangiovese I could never really warm up to. Overall not bad - will see.
