3 hr slow ox in bottle. Cork perfect - zero sediment. Clear ruby color and muted nose. On palate the wine just seemed flat and lifeless. I have had many of these and last couple have just been off somehow. Do not think it is tainted or otherwise flawed. Possible a late dumb stage? Not sure I can see this wine coming back to where it was a year or two ago - which seems odd. Hoping next one proves me wrong.

Medium depth of colour; still somewhat austere, with a fairly light palate, lacking concentration. It tasted like a fairly ordinary Chianti. Perhaps it needs more time. It seems no better than when we first tried it 4 years ago. Patience required.

Visible signs of maturity, with a coppery edge on the ruby purple color. Good complex aromas and flavors of dried flowers, leather, and plum. Tannic through the finish. Probably at peak.

I tried one from 2012 a few weeks ago, but I think this one has the edge over it. Similar distinctive profile, on the sour side and quite heavy on the balsamic. But this is perhaps more rounded with more secondary notes- leather, cocoa, eucalyptus. Maybe this vintage just matured sooner - definitely in a good place right now.

Almost a year since my last bottle. Thought it was time to check in again, and happened to be only a day or two before Eric Guido published his 2013 BdM retrospective at Vinous. As so often Poggione came out almost at the top. In my eyes this continuous to be one of the better 2013s but I remain to be entirely convinced about both vintage and producer. Drank over two days. Showing better on day 2 than day 1, plenty of acidity and oak / wood spices especially upon opening. Medium bodied wine, the fruit is a bit reserved but not closed. This could come together in a better way in another two years but am not entirely convinced just now as an (equally highly rated) 2013 Costanti last year seemed borderline oxidative. Try again in 12 months

Lovely colour of translucent dusky garnet. Initially, a lovely nose of crushed fruit and musk. But on the palate, a bit thin, freeze dried raspberries, red cherries. Thankfully no aggressive heat from alcohol. After an hour or so, the mid palate filled out and I got some more herby, green notes, plus a bit more minerality, but the tannins came to the fore and that wasn't fun. They settled down after a bit. There is a juicy acidity throughout, just lacking a bit of density when it comes to flavour.

Still tight and too young, but the crunchy, fresh fruit on the palate along the rock solid structure promises great things to come and a long life. Needs 5+ years at least. At the moment this is (still) all about potential. 17+/20

Bottle 2 of 4. It has improved over three years. Notes of tobacco, sour cherry, and beginning to show its age visually. After three hour decant, paired beautifully with slow cooked short ribs over polenta. This wine is in a very good place right now.

A potent, delicious wine. 14.5% alcohol. Very long finish. The wine held up well over the three days during which I drank it (with food). This is the first of my case of 12, and I was very pleased with this first bottle.

A nice wine, I think it shows everything the vintage 2013 has to give in Montalcino. Maybe the Sangiovese acidity was a bit in the foreground, but overall a lovely wine with food. Tannins are very well integrated. We had several bottles while a family party and bottle variation was notable, especially in cause of primary fruit. Some bottles had been more secondary and some more primary, although they had been buyed and cellared the same time and way. All in all a very nice wine with meat and sides.

Decanted at an Argentinian steak restaurant. Initial whiff of cardboard - is this corked? Once poured into glassware the cork taint was not obvious. The wine seemed quite well resolved showing notes of old bookcases, leather and sour cherry. The three other table guests seemed to enjoy it although I thought the midpalate was slightly clipped and overall perhaps the wine was ever so slightly corked. Still enjoyable and of course I did not share my opinion amongst "muggle" fellow diners. Would like to try another bottle to see. By way of reference, I have had quite a lot of the 2010 and recent bottles of that seemed fresher than the 2013, so until proven otherwise, I suspect ever so slightly faulty / non-pristine - but until I have had other examples I am not certain enough to tick it as flawed or defective.

Decanted (there was sediment) and waited 60 minutes after which the initial funk had blown off and it was fairly opened up. Didn't improve substantially over an additional hour (120 minutes after opening). Poured from a 375ml bottle. This note was written after dinner, at 2-1/2 hours after opening when drying tannins emerged.
The color is garnet with browning at the edges. The nose has forest floor, cigar box, mushrooms, and vague hints of cherry, cranberry, and camphor. Some balsamic notes on the medium finish. The palate has fading dark cherries and not much other fruit, decent acid, and firm tannins. I think this wine (at least in 375ml bottles) is past its prime, given the attenuation of fruit. A 750ml bottle isn't likely that much different, so drink up!

Clearly aged with an amber rim.balsamic notes of cedar and furniture polish emerge from the glass combined with notes of tobacco and dried fruit. Medium bodied attack. A very dry mouthfeel kicks in on the mid palate. The wine has clearly lost most of the fruit, and has passed into old -almost senile - age. Lots of balsamic tones in the aftertaste, little fruit excepr some dried prunes. Good wine, but drink up.
Dark cherry fruit and complex notes of leather, smoke, tar, tobacco and forest floor. Not overly expressive on the palate or nose but intense blend of flavors on the finish. This wine has a lot of life into it and likely will evolve even further.

Quite light with brownish rim. Fine nose dominated by quite fresh berries a-la raspberries, but also with a tobacco undertone. Medium bodied attack, high acidity up front, raspberries and cherries on the mid palate, some alcoholic warmth at the end. Fresh and quite light finish and aftertaste. The alcohol is quite present. An elegant and quite light brunello. Perhaps a bit over the top, and will probably lose fruit over next 5-10 years.

2 years since my last bottle, and similar to other 2013 BdM this is drinking differently in its youth than any BdM vintage I have had in the last 20 years. This is aromatically fairly muted, oak pretty well integrated, restrained on the palate but not closed in my eyes. Am getting this sense of fairly well concentrated small berries here. None of the exuberance and explosive aromatics we often get in young Brunello. I can see this lasting potentially a long time, without picking any of the oxidative notes we so often get with older BdM since the late 90s, indeed perhaps similar to 70s/80s vintages of BdMs in style. At the same time am still not sure this will ever be a great wine. Reminds me also of the 2013 Mazzei Gran Selezione, a Sangiovese I could never really warm up to. Overall not bad - will see.

Deep garnet with slightly orange rim. Sweet cherries in high intensity and light on its feet on the palate. but not thin in any means. Anyway, I decided to decant this. One hour later it was a great joy with wild boar ragout, which is a bit dominated by orange peel, and mashed potatoes with truffles. This worked exceptional well, because this "thin" wine easily stood up against this intensely flavoured dish and was in complete harmony. Later more than 6+ hours of airtime in the decanter tasted again. Giving cherries, dark berries, minty notes, tobacco leaf and herbs. This seems to be too young to be ready after opening, but with airing it offers the heights it can achieve. Better wait for 3 to 5 more years or be patient. Nevertheless it already deserves the 96 points from Monica Larner from the WA. 5/13/18/10

Takes its time to open up. I think this can be better in 3-5 years, you would think that after 9 yesrs it should be ready… let’s try this in a few years, I have a few 11s from Chris. Drink those. Otherwise perfectly fine brunello, when fully ready 92+ range
2 hrs later increased the note from 91 to 92. All there now.

interestingly I found this more bold and dark than many of the other reviewers, good acidity for sure, seemed very very young and the boldness made it slightly less friendly that I would have thought for 9 year old BdM... hmmm.... but OK to good for the price ($85 including shipping and tax)

Somewhat closed. Nose of camphor. Marzipan. Little fruit, maybe amarena cherry. Tannins are relatively strong, but rather well rounded. At the moment value for money is not great, maybe it needs more time. Opens up with air.

One hour decanted. Fruit and tannins in the nose, very closed. Hard tannins at the palate, fresh but little unbalaced fruit of the forrest. Unclear if too young or just unbalaced. I'll wait for the next bottle at least 5 years.

Showing very young and coiled up at first, but with a little bit of it this really was drinking well. Light and pretty fruit, very bright acidity and nicely balanced. These wines are one of the best deals in Brunello, in my opinion.

Strawberry and menthol on the nose. On the palate, cherry, raspberry, and notes of leather and savory herbs, with moderate tannins and fairly strong acidity on the medium to long finish. Although this opened up over a couple of hours, it needs decanting at this point, or preferably five more years of aging. This was a very good value at about $50.

[Tasted Blind] This pours medium garnet in the glass with light bricking noted. The nose is moderately expressive, and quite classically tuscan showing dried cherry, light balsamic notes, ever so slight VA, touches of rosemary, and dry hay. The palate is very driven by its structure with medium plus tannin, and medium plus acid, finishing on lovely cherry pit notes. All in all here we have a tuscan classic that I figured was a Brunello. The only drawback is today the structure is clearly overpowering the fruit. The group consensus was that this was older, due to some semi-mature aromas, bricking and somewhat lighter color.

Crunchy red fruits and minerals presented in a beautiful framework of high acidity and lots of finely grained tannins. Explosive entry on the palate but holding the tension well until the slightly dusty finish. Clearly extremely well built and showing fantastic Sangiovese characteristics already, will be plain gorgeous in 5-10 years. Very impressive. 17.5+/20

Popped and took a sip, so much packed together and hugely tannic. Left it in decanter for 2 hours. A medium garnet color with very slight bricking on the sides already... Could have been a nice clear slightly aged bordeaux just looking at it The nose though is vibrant and perfuming cedar, leather, and black fruit. It's juicy and layered with long concentrated acidity and structured tannins and starts to come together. Oak and minerals all packed together as well which makes it a very chewy drink. Can probably breathe for a few more hours to further mellow out the tannins... But gosh it's hard to wait. A slice of pizza and this... Wow ...

Decanted for about an hour out of a 375. Lovely nose. There is definitely a savory quality along with red cherry fruit. Palate of red, some blue to a lesser degree, fruit. Again the savory notes appear with a dusty finish. Tannins still present but depending on your tolerance (mine seems to be high) this is drinking nicely.

Brunello and Ragu (Home): Double-magnum. Opened around 30-40 minutes before we started on it, with the first half immediately poured into two 75cl decanters and the rest following once there was space. I was a bit worried that the wine would be overly youthful (tannic and/or closed), and at first there was a distinct lack of aroma aside from something cool and stoney. Fear not, before too long things started to blossom and by the second half of the bottle I would say it was very open, pliant and aromatic. The wine was elegant, with bright acidity, silky tannins and the scent of sweet flowers on the nose, but with enough structure to deal with wild boar ragu followed by sausage and cannellini stew. Excellent stuff.

Not super aromatically expressive. There’s some sweet tobacco notes and some earthiness on the nose. It’s a bit muted in the palate too, needed some air for sure, but there’s some great structure here. I think it will unfold nicely but this might need another 5 years in the cellar. It’s great now, just grippy.

medium red color starting to show a little bit of age. Intense nose with smoke, earth, red fruits and a cedar note.
On the palate very fresh and litefooted with the red fruits dancing around followed by more serious impressions of old spice, cloves smoke and an oaky note.
The wine developed further in the glass and actually the last sip was the best, and the one after that would have been even better I think. So when drinking decant for several hours to pull all out if this one. Or age it a few years on, this puppy can last.

Didn't really know what to make of this wine - Admitted it was pop and pour which is probably sacrilidge with this Brunello. Still at this price range I was schoked that it didn't show more fruit and lushness. It is very light and dry. I it's not that I dont like like elegant Brunello's in fact they are ususlly the only kind of Brunello I can appricaite. BU this was just borderline thin and dull. I have a couple more in the celler. Will give it a hefty decant and more attention next time.

Almost 18 months since my last bottle. 30 min decant and this was good to go. Lovely freshness here and still good medium weight, more dark than red fruit, earth, oak and tannins felt well integrated. Medium length. Very well done in this lighter vintage by Poggione as they did not try to force the sinewy and dark style I associate with this producer.

This time gave a full 10 hour decant. Drank alongside Castiglion del Bosco 2015 (which was decanted for 6 hrs) Must give the nod to the Il Poggione which really blossomed after the long air. Enjoyed with a nice seafood Cioppino - magical! So glad I loaded up on this.

Deep garnet with slight orange tinted rim. Oh, this is quite young and needs some air to reveal a bit of its bouquet potential. On the palate it is more open from the start. Medium high levels of round tannins and great refreshing acidity. Typical Sangiovese. Cherries, dark berries, herbal and minty notes as well as wet earth. Light on its feet, but with intense flavours. For me it lacks a bit of bouquet intensity to fully acknowledge the 96 points from the Wine Advocate. But that can be due to the fact that the decanter was emptied quickly and there was not enough airtime. Nevertheless I believe that it should be cellared for three better five more years. 5/12/18/10. 2025-2035. 95 points from the International Wine Report.

Decanted this and then drank between 3 and 4 hours later with some lamb meatballs and spinach/ricotta tortellini.
On opening, and still when starting to drink 3 hours later, I found this a little high on acidity and thin on the palate. However, as we came to the end of the bottle about 4 hours after decanting everything was starting to get in a much better balance: the nose is sweet but dark fruit; on the palate nice smooth tannins have developed, the acidity has moderated, and the fruit has come a bit more to the fore adding a bit of body to the wine. The finish is moderately long, with dark fruit and light tannin.
At 4 hours in I'd rate this as a 90, but I feel that it was still on an upwards trend so I will decant my next bottles at least 6 hours in advance.
Decent QPR at the ~US$31 I paid.

Slow-O 5 hours, better on day 2. Ageing glacially, as many of their wines tend to do - in classic, and non-classic vintages. Red fruited, very fine tannins not yet fully resolved, plenty of fresh acidity. Some citrus, and deep soil tones, have me looking forward to drinking 2022-2036. Good today, very good in a few more years. recommended
A fairly deep colour; dark cherry fruit, slightly bitter, with the palate subdued by some noticeable tannin. OK with food, but needs 2 to 3 years to open out fully.

Bright Ruby red in color, haven't had a brunello in a while and this delivery came just in time to cure the craving. On the nose it's earthy, oak, leather, coffee bean, vanilla bean and spices. Pleasuring notes developed 3 years time in French oak. Down the palate there's soothing notes of red cherries, followed by coffee beans, cooking spices, cumin seeds, chewy tannins, medium to long finishing. Already great but will definitely be better in years to come.

100% Sangiovese, this has fairly intense aromatics that are savoury with dark red cherry, earthy, and forest floor aromas with whiffs of floral. It's full-bodied with juicy acids and smooth, fine tannins. Elegant in the mouth with a very nice mouthfeel and lovely aroma replays on the flavour profile. Nicely balanced throughout with a long finish and should continue to drink well over the next 10+ years.

*tasted with somewhat congested nose due to allergies* 45 min decant. Medium garnet color, showing more brick-red than I would expect for the age. Very meaty with slight red currant and strawberry on the nose. Palate of milk chocolate, raspberries, under-ripe strawberries, leather, and tobacco. Medium + tannins. Medium + acidity. The acidic backbone of the wine makes it good with food.

On nose : med+ intensity, red fruit : red cherry, star anise, tobacco, black pepper, tea leaves, mineral savoury
On palate : dry, med+ acidity, ripe sweet red cherry, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, peppery spiciness, sweet and fine tannin, tea leaves, fruit on front palate, savoury and dark chocolate bitterness, med+ finishing.
It is very pleasant, good match with steak, dark chocolate is significant and structured, everyone loves its complexity. A very typical and lovely Sangiovese. Enjoy it now or keep it for 3 more years. Cheers!

Had a nice glass of this at a restaurant recently, and wanted to taste the wine properly so opened a bottle over dinner at home. Splash decent, transparent garnet in the glass. showing initially round but aromatically muted, this needs a bit of air to open up. Aromatic herbs and a whiff of oak on the nose. Quite elegant on the palate, dried dark fruit, medium tannins and very good length. With the exception of their 2010 vintage, which is currently drinking really well, am usually not a big fan of Poggione, as the wines are often rather muscular and trade refinement for power, but this 2013 is nice. It’s not overdone, but instead in sync with what seems like a good but not great Brunello vintage. Would give it another 2 years before opening. 92

Holy crap this is acidic and tannic, lots of oak too. Can anyone drink this? Certainly not me. Alc. is a whopping 14.5% too. Let’s revisit in 10 years and hope for the best...
Brunello di Montalcino 2013 tasting (Restaurant Vineum, Rotterdam, NL): Tasted blind. Mature but lively appearance, light to medium depth; open and attractive nose, good typicity, leather and earth and fruit and flowers, high quality oak; relaxed and flowing palate, supported by a firm tannic structure and refreshing acidity, considerable power, well balanced; finely grained tannins on the finish, very good length. Extra point for style.

Robe bourgogne.

A bit of camphor and black cherry on the nose. On the palate, the black cherry fruit is quite ripe and the texture is fairly rustic and grippy with good intensity and notes of woodsmoke and red spice. Finishes powerful with a raw mineral crunch and dry tannins. Good now with food but needs time to soften up. A very intense, ripe style of Brunello. 90+

Opened to breathe for an hour. Much less manure/barnyard in this bottle than the previous. Pretty incredible. Hard to believe it is the same wine I tried last week. I'm getting much more potting soil, oak, leather on the nose and palate from this bottle. Black fruit but it is subdued compared with the earlier elements. Still intellectually interesting but not delicious. Pumped down and enjoyed over 3 days. Good with dinner over a few nights.

LOL if OLDWINES considers this to be swill, I'd hate to see how he scores actual swill. ;-) I admit the provocative note made me curious about my own bottles, so what the heck, I popped one to find out.
First of all this initially has an unusual earthy barnyardy nose (almost like bdx) but with some fruit cordial underneath. It's aromatic, I will give you that, but as a previous reviewer mentioned, almost off-putting. After an hour the barnyard has blown off, but still an oaky earthy nose remains. It has red fruit, yes, plenty of acid, some spices, and definitely tannins. This is more intellectually interesting than actually delicious. Not a great match for my palate, unfortunately, but not a bad match and I wouldn't consider this swill. Just disappointing. When a brunello comes together it is magic. No magic for me with Il Poggione, regrettably. Pumped down overnight. Less fragrant, less fruit and more acid on day 2.

Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello in NYC. I just don't get what people see in this wine. My second try at it... My only notes say..."UGH, tannic, raisiny fruit" I find nothing attractive about it. The comments by the likes of Vinous, Decanter and WA are in no way consistent with the swill I am drinking... Someone should teach the pourers at the table how to decant a wine before serving such a big, young wine?!?

A Birthday Celebration (Taste 222 - Chicago IL): Small glass, brief note. At first I wondered if slightly corked, given how much earth such a young wine displayed. But Mike convinced me otherwise. I know this is a top producer in a good vintage, but the wine never impressed me, just seeming soft and nearly elegant with medium weight and hardly complex red fruit.

100% Sangiovese matured for three years in French oak barrels. Indian spice, ripe dusty cherry, with some leather and tobacco thrown in for full effect. Il Poggione is a winery steeped in history with its origins dating back to the late 1800s. Owned by Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi, it is situated below the beautiful hilltop town of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation characterized by temperate, yet well-ventilated micro-climate. This benefits the grapes by maintaining refreshing acidity levels and extending their ripening time. Wines are aged only in large French barrels (with the exception of Riserva), to preserve the natural flavors of bright and rich Sangiovese.
Such a young Brunello we have on our hands here, which I still see being pushed down people's throats in restaurants, instead of being cellared and offered in two-three years time. Remarkably refined nose which gives an impression of a bottomless spectra of aromas. Everything ranging from violets to tobacco appears here. The palate is intellectually demanding, darkly mysterious and absolutely worth the investigatory efforts, but as I said, leave it be for a few years. Paired with a truffle burger brought to you by Adriatic Pantry.

Nose is quite shy, cherries and leather with hints of toasted cedar and forest floor. Palate is elegant but closed, not revealing much even after an hour in the decanter. The structure, which is deep and persistent, is at the front at the moment. The acidity is providing a supportive role as the texture is rounded and velvety. Very long and smooth finish, with some bitter tannins at the end. It seems like the wine is at the shutdown phase now. Given the texture and length of this wine, it should open up beautifully in 5 years’ time. 89-92 pts.
Retasted in Sep 2019, it is still not ready to drink, quite closed and thin initially. Needs plenty of breathing for the wine to open up with decent density. Though it softened faster than before. No change in score. Keep for another 3-5 years.
Retasted in Oct 2022 and Mar 2023, the wine still needed an hour of slow decanting with a Bordeuax glass for the bouquet to open up. Profound earthy layers of forest floor, seasoned leather and cedar, gravel stone and sour cherries in the undertone. The medium-bodied palate is rich, round and full of umami notes. Nice density and length from entry to a deep finish with a touch of bitter but powdery tannins. Still evolving. Another 3 more years in a dark cellar will be even better. To increase by 2 pts to 91, with potential to go up to 94 pts when it is at its peak.

Benvenuto Brunello 2018; 2/18/2018-2/19/2018: Naso croccante di lampone, ribes e piccoli frutti neri, sottofondo floreale, pungente di cuoio e pepe nero. Fine e preciso. Palato nervoso, con tannini che si aggrappano, sapido e minerale. Lungo. Ottimo come ci si può aspettare da un produttore di questo livello in una vendemmia eccellente.

A Season of Change: 2013 Brunello di Montalcino: The nose was remarkably fresh and refined, displaying pure strawberry and cherry fruit, with dusty sweet floral tones and minerals. On the palate, I found youthfully-lean textures with zesty acidity giving life to notes of tart cherry, spice and earth tones. It finished long and structured with lasting dried berry fruit and hints of leather.

Benvenuto Brunello NYC (Gotham Hall): Benvenuto Brunello, NYC. Tasted the same bottle as oldwines - had pretty much the same take away in that this did not show very well, and seemed to come up well short of any high praise/scores. Very likely this was a combination of bottle variation and, to a lesser degree, aeration. Given the vintage's classic attributes, I have to believe that this has the same classic elements as some of the finer examples in the room today - just not this bottle; a shame. I will taste it again at ProWein, VinItaly, and most likely during a visit in February, too.
Tasted at Benvenuto Brunello NYC. I really have a hard time seeing what other people see in the Il Poggione Brunello's. These may have been too recently opened to fully appreciate but it just seemed like a hard, harsh, lean, high tannin and acid brut of a wine. I frankly tasted nothing pleasant about it. I have had similar experiences before. It just does nothing for me. I have some of the 2004 and 2006 Normale and Riserva in my cellar but don't know what to do with them. Maybe they need a lot of time to come around and probably a lot more air than the idiot pouring the wines at this table was willing to give it.

A bit rustic, minerals, good fruits, oak and spices. On the palate red and dark berries, juicy fruits and a firm amount of sticky tannin. Wait 5 – 8+ years. 92 – 93+ for today.

Strawberry and menthol on the nose. On the palate, cherry, raspberry, and notes of leather and savory herbs, with moderate tannins and fairly strong acidity on the medium to long finish.

Popped and took a sip, so much packed together and hugely tannic. Left it in decanter for 2 hours.
A medium garnet color with very slight bricking on the sides already... Could have been a nice clear slightly aged bordeaux just looking at it
The nose though is vibrant and perfuming cedar, leather, and black fruit.
It's juicy and layered with long concentrated acidity and structured tannins and starts to come together. Oak and minerals all packed together as well which makes it a very chewy drink. Can probably breathe for a few more hours to further mellow out the tannins... But gosh it's hard to wait.

A 2 hour decant to get this one going.
medium red color starting to show a little bit of age.

Dried raspberries with astringency (should have given more time to open); fruit is light but carries long across the palate with notes of sour cherries, earth & a lovely wild brambly quality.

Decant for 1hr
Appearance : pale ruby, with beautiful legs

100% Sangiovese matured for three years in French oak barrels. Indian spice, ripe dusty cherry, with some leather and tobacco thrown in for full effect. I like the 2011 much better, two years ago, for it was much more expressive; I gave it 94 points. Maybe this 2013 needs extra time to develop. 92 points. September 2018
