Sunday, April 23, 2023 - Birth year Sparkling Wine, opened up at a co-hosted event. This wine was served as the first white wine in a 1 sparkler, 3 white wine, 4 red wine and 1 dessert wine lineup. I had acquired this a few years ago and have always wondered whether I wanted this more because it was my birth year, a Schramsberg wine, or both equally the same (my vote is on BOTH). The foil and cage were in great shape. The cork had soaked through to the rim of the bottle but had not soaked the rest. Cork came out and a very faint fizz was appreciated for a split second (also possible that I "heard" this fizz but didn't a really hear it). The wine was decanted as a brackish light amber. Notes initially really had me concerned about the viability. Sat for 15 minutes before serving and it did the wine very well. Nose and palate of almond brioche, dill, buttered sourdough toast, and quite yeasty. This wine still had QUITE an opulent mouthfeel and I would say that even though this one is most assuredly not in its prime, it was as expected (actually, much more than expected). What a beautiful piece of Napa winemaking history, from one of my favorite producers! This was a great way to kick off an awesome lineup of wines, over 2/3 from California, on a Friday afternoon!
