Monday, May 1, 2023 - A cellar stored since release bottle, tight dry cork. Near black ink color. Decanted, trivial sediment. After one hour, still compressed, locked up, impossibly restrained, huge but unapproachable, showing its 15%, and hiding its complexities behind a thick wall of tea tannins. After 2.5 hours, cassis, espresso beans, and milk chocolate came through. By hour 4, an explosion of complex images in the glass: black raspberries in chocolate fondue, wood grilled mushrooms bathed in mole negro, black plum skins, spearmint, violets trampled in a tobacco field, and aged rare black tea. Vibrant, rich, but not heavy, sweet, or fat. Not better on day 2, more blueberry, black cherry acidity and baking spice, but simpler. In it’s prime drinking window, w proper decant. Complex and profound juice from a great producer who has maximized the charms of this legendary vineyard for 20+ years. No food needed, although we found seared venison tenderloin and wood grilled quail, rare and simply seasoned with coffee spice rub, were perfect. Keep it simple, this bottle is the star, and will be for 10+ years.
