Lunch at Wa-I. Tasted blind. Drank in Sydonios Meridional. Appearance is opaque, very deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Long legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of spearmint, chocolate mocha, spice, blueberries, blackberries, black cherries. Developed. On the palate, dry, just about high acidity, high alcohol (15% front, 16% back label), smooth integrated high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of chocolate mocha, blueberries, blackberries, black cherries, dark currants, black licorice, sweet drk spices, creme de cassis, asphalt, spearmint background. Long plummy plush finish. Excellent quality. Big ripe and lush plush but never feels heavy or jammy. Quite a joy to keep sipping on. Prime time drinking.

1hr decant and open for business. Shouldering iron, cherry pipe tobacco, and black plums carry the day in this well integrated masterpiece that really lets the site shine. Tannins fully integrated, and a finish that lingers for a good minute. Epic with Flannery ribeyes.

Opened with intention of a glass or two with grilled rib eyes. Gave an hour decant, then open in bottle. Nose of blackberries and eucalyptus hit you as you pull the cork. Dark purple in glass. Lingers with dark berries, leather on mid-palate. Finish is forever. Three hours later I had finished glasses 3 and 4–can’t put this down. If this was to get better on day 2 or 3, I never got there. This is what you get with grapes from a great vineyard, created by a great vintner team.

A cellar stored since release bottle, tight dry cork. Near black ink color. Decanted, trivial sediment. After one hour, still compressed, locked up, impossibly restrained, huge but unapproachable, showing its 15%, and hiding its complexities behind a thick wall of tea tannins. After 2.5 hours, cassis, espresso beans, and milk chocolate came through. By hour 4, an explosion of complex images in the glass: black raspberries in chocolate fondue, wood grilled mushrooms bathed in mole negro, black plum skins, spearmint, violets trampled in a tobacco field, and aged rare black tea. Vibrant, rich, but not heavy, sweet, or fat. Not better on day 2, more blueberry, black cherry acidity and baking spice, but simpler. In it’s prime drinking window, w proper decant. Complex and profound juice from a great producer who has maximized the charms of this legendary vineyard for 20+ years. No food needed, although we found seared venison tenderloin and wood grilled quail, rare and simply seasoned with coffee spice rub, were perfect. Keep it simple, this bottle is the star, and will be for 10+ years.

WOTN for me and everyone I talked to out of 8 different Hobbs offerings. This is Goldilocks perfect in terms of weight (medium), complexity, fruit vs. non-fruit flavors. Much more of a Bordeaux than New World style. Now in a peak drinking window that will last another ten years or so. Though an expensive bottle, this well merits its price as a truly world-class Cabernet.
