Saturday, May 23, 2009 - Definitely will improve with more bottle age and so, although this had all the stuffing and then some, indicative of a phenomenal bottle of wine, the tannins were so stiff, they were difficult to see past, at this stage. This bottle so very reminded me of my first experience with this wine (vintage?..perhaps '02?). Inky, dark, deep, blackish purple. Full, earthy black/blue fruits; nice length in the mid palate with perhaps ever-so-slightly, understated acidity...and mouth-coating (though again, at this stage, saliva zapping and so, somewhat distracting) tannins. This wine is a monster and clearly made in the high integrity style that is so rarely seen in these fruit-forward, almost "kool-aid-y", approachable Tempranillo-based wine days. And to imagine, at around $20-$25, that you could expect this wine not only to be so impressive at this stage but to have what it takes to improve considerably, over the next 3-7 years. Brilliant!
