Such a great wine. Lot of sediment. Prob on the decline but is drinking great. Still nice integrated tannins, and plenty of fruit. Wish i had more of this.

Hard to rate since first time from my cellar. I liked it a lot. Nice balance of fruit, earthiness and mineral elements. Nice nose of the same. Good value at less than $30.00.

Same thoughts as a tasting I posted a while back. This one has been very enjoyable and a great value, but is fading. I have one bottle left and will drink it soon. It is tasting a little flat in contrast to the deep/dark/complex character it had before.

I agree that this one is past its prime but it just started going downhill. Aromas of dark fruits, primarily cherries. Velvety in texture with a touch of residual sweetness. Still very good!

Aged beautifully, aromas of wet stones, tobacco, and cherry. The cherry flavors are bright and fresh, with licorice spice. Tannins are integrated, but still provide ample structure. A good long finish. Decant for sediment. Drink in the next two years.

I believe this is starting to fall apart. The mouthfeel is still rather lush, but then there is not much fruit on the palate, and it ends with a fragile alcoholic puckering. I would drink these up. This is my last bottle. 6 bottles down and nowhere near the gushing experience others have reported. It seems more like an acceptable $20 mid-week drinker.

I am seeing some bottle variation among the bottles I purchased a year ago from the same souce. This was the best so far, and I do like this wine. It is bordering on jammy with a lot of fruit, but good complexity. Tobacco, a little tar, no funk though. Not exactly rustic, but quite earthy.

Note written 3.5 hours after opening. Deep ruby color. Light sediment. Aromas of white mushroom and plum sauce. Stylish entry. This opens with with a whack of oak and vanilla with a ripe mid-palate core of dark forest fruit. A tendril of sulfur. Drying finish. Lightly tannic. Medium body. Well balanced. Enjoy or hold. With food or without. We had this with a cheese tray, including a fine aged Manchego and a Wisconsin cracked black pepper cheese with grilled bread basket. Paired well. 92

Drank 2 bottles over 5 days. This is definitely forward and fruity, but there is some nice minerality and a little earth. For the price, I think this is pretty good.

PNP which was mistake. Big, full throttle, a lot in there, still tannic, needs either a day to breathe or more years or both. Everything in there that needs to be- this should be a really rewarding keep in a while. I see a lot of CT notes saying drink now and so perhaps a decant will help a lot, but I think this has years to get better and better

com aroma de frutas negras, aveludado, taninos muito macios, bem encorpado, notas de mirtilo, chocolate, baunilha e balsâmico. Muito sabor e persistente deixou a sensação de "quero mais" no final. Belíssimo vinho.

Big jammy black fruit, black pepper, oak and other spice on the nose. Big, primary, forward, dense black fruit on the palate. Tannic on the finish. Will hold up to any spicey food.

PnP. Reddish violet. Meaty dark fruits on nose. Palate enters with flabby dark, lightly spiced fruits. Feels heavy and a little hot. Not complex and zero finesse. Plenty of fruit, but lack of structure indicates that aging will not help this wine.

Decanted for about an hour and it was drinking well. As other have noted, possibly hitting its peak now. I did think there was still a decent amount of fruit left.

Decanted about 45 minutes to an hour... surprisingly no sediment. Dark fruit, spice and oak noted, a touch raisiny. On the palate dark fruits, slightly pruney/raisiny, hint of espresso, but with a long astringent tannic finish. Fruit was not very prominent at all, had more of a dried fruit character. The tannins were making this a bit tedious to drink by the end of the bottle, and I'm not sure if it is an issue of the fruit being masked by the tannins, or that the fruit is fading to be dramatically outlasted by the tannins. I'm leaning towards the latter on this.

Nose: Aromas of scorched earth and soy sauce. Palate: Big tannins but unfortunately little of the wonderful fruit experienced on my last bottle and notes from 1/5/10. The fruit that is there is dark. Even though there are some redeeming aspects to this wine it is too bad it is nothing like the 91 pointer experienced years ago. I think those other reviewers waiting for more time will continue to be disappointed as the tannin levels aren't the issue, the the lack of fruit is. This is the Termes and not the Numanthia so drink up if you have any.

Med deep to deep maroon w hints of bricking - deep oaky Christmas cake nose - smells very much like Christmas cake - with a slightly tart sweet plum sauce - pretty smooth and plush - molasses notes, decent acidity, but overextracted, grippy, slightly hot - not our style, leaning toward the Dark Side - better w food - we decanted this 3 hrs.

This wine is big and extracted...the nose is baked dark fruit and oak with a bit of heat. The fruit has a baked note to it (not "cooked" like it is damaged - more like baked fruits) and not much definition or dimension. On the palate it's a powerhouse, full bodied and hot, with earth and that baked fruit again, lots of alcohol and oak. I can see why Parker loves it (over-extracted and over the top) but I don't....I liked my first bottle 4 years ago much better - either time has not treated it well or my palate has changed, but either way I'll gladly open my last bottle with the first guest to visit who has a preference for the style and I likely will not buy any more.

Though drinkable, I'd have to think that the overall impression was effected by the fact that upon opening, I discovered a cork with a saturated top. A surprisingly slight level of wet cardboard in the nose, it was mostly muted and non-descript. As for the flavor and mouthfeel, I must admit that I was NOT disappointed, as it showed much like a mildly earthy, austere old world Rioja; something that this modern-styled reference point for Toro is not. Tannins were still quite prominent; even set against the Mt. Veeder '05 Reserve, which preceded it. Looking forward to my last bottle. I might peel the foil just to make sure that I've still got something good to look forward to! (even with this bottle's issues, I'd give it an 89/90)

Huge, delicious, modern, but one-dimensional with limited complexity. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine, but it didn't captivate me and I was consistently looking for that next layer. Still, a wonderful QPR and I can understand the hype...

The best way to describe the wine, savory. The fruit really took a back seat here as dark chocolate, cedar and leather are front with a herbal, sage note and finishing with soy. Dark fruit on the palate, but a sage turkey sausage stuffing note here was interesting. The tannins seemed better integrated at this point, than any of the '04s; here's to hoping this translates to the other bottlings having good aging potential.

seems to be drinking well now. juicy blackberry and raspberry fruit. some minerals and leather. hint of toast. racy acidity and not too much wood. components are well integrated. but not super-interesting. relatively unexpressive aromatically. tannins are there, but don't seem as overbearing as some have suggested in earlier notes. not inspiring, but very good quality for the $.

This needs way more time, and then all we can do is hope that the fruit outlasts the tannin. I get none of the aforementioned heat, just a lot of tannin. Other bottle in three to five years. Hold.

Very impressed! - Black as night, this solid red delivers ripe cassis and blackberry fruit, backed by vanilla, toasty oak, meat and mineral notes over firm tannins. Layered and Delicious, with a long lip smacking finish. Where can I get more? (Drink 2010-2018) - JD93

Decanted for around 45 mins. Dark inky purple color. Complex nose with dark, ripe black and blue fruits, brown sugar and vanilla aromas. More of the same on the palate along with a decent amount of oak and a pronounced liquid black licorice flavor on the back end. The tannins on this wine are BIG and are probably holding back some additional flavors at the moment. Alcohol is in check though. I think this wine will be stellar with another 3-5 years on it once the tannins subdue a little and integrate. Really well made wine. I am upset this was my only bottle. Definite 93-94 pt potential.

For the amount of pleasure it provides today to its ability to age, this is definitely a rebuy. It's showing plenty of juicy red and black fruit, good weight and texture, and nice complexity, especially at this price point. The tannins are kickin pretty hard (lotta oak influence) and the finish is a little hot. This hasn't changed much at all since I first tried it several years ago. The fruit and tannin seem to be in a wrestling match and need to learn to get along. Will easily go 10 more years. Totally understand why anyone would drink this young, but this has better days ahead. Really regret not purchasing the '06 at a similar price. Excellent modern Tempranillo.

Nose: Blackberry, chocolate and wet stone with some pencil lead and spicy floral traces. Palate: Good tannins with blackberry and spice showing. Still very much a baby this wine has a long life ahead. First Termes I've had. The other Numanthias were the mid level, Numanthia wine. This is basically the baby version. For the mid $20s (on sale) it represents a very solid QPR and went well with leftover Porterhouse steak.

Dark purple core with ruby rim. Nose of deep red flowers, smoke, figs, and dried red and black fruit. On the palate there is vanilla, raspberry, blackberry, and a bit of alcoholic heat. Great wine, priced well. Not a classic (as many have argued here) but still an excellent, powerful Spanish red.

TN: St. Cosme, Termes, Two Hands Max's, Cheysson, Sterling Three Palms; 12/25/2009-12/26/2009: My in-laws really like fruited (over)oaked wines, so this bottle was opened. Not as bad as it was on release, but there is still way too much oak. It seems to be developing well though. Plenty of fruit left and the oak was not as obtrusive. Some heat on the finish, as the balance is not what I would prefer. If I had any more bottles, I suppose I would be comfortable letting them rest. Not bad, but there was some left and I am curious how it shows on Day 2.

Based on the notes here, I decanted this for 3 hours prior to drinking with a small taste right after decanting and each hour. The wine did open up over time. Powerful nose of berries, cherry and vanilla. I do not taste the strong fruit many of the other notes mention. I got muted fruit walled off by heavy tannins and a strong earth core with a medium length finish. Winespecator uses the term austere and I have to agree. Obviously liked it based on the score but I will not drink any more for another couple of years. I love good wine but hate the delayed gratification part of it. I do think that it will evolve into the 95 point range over the next few years.

OK - almost 18 months have passed and I can now say this is drinking real nice now. I did a PNP and will have this over three nights. First the nose was intoxicating. It was worth opening the bottle by itself. The first taste was nice but it did need some time in the glass to open up and dissipate the heat a bit. It was dark fruit, coffee and still a good bit of oak. This can still go out a few years but is enjoyable now. Day 1 was good, lets see if it's better tonight. Looking forward to sharing this with others later and watching it over a few years.
Day 2 - Had to go and check - aged for 19 months in New French oak - OK I think they could have done well with about 12 months of oak. It's what I get on the nose and taste. Having said that it was still very nice and enjoyable. Lets see how day 3 goes.
Day3 - seemed to fade a bit but still nice.

Definitely will improve with more bottle age and so, although this had all the stuffing and then some, indicative of a phenomenal bottle of wine, the tannins were so stiff, they were difficult to see past, at this stage. This bottle so very reminded me of my first experience with this wine (vintage?..perhaps '02?). Inky, dark, deep, blackish purple. Full, earthy black/blue fruits; nice length in the mid palate with perhaps ever-so-slightly, understated acidity...and mouth-coating (though again, at this stage, saliva zapping and so, somewhat distracting) tannins. This wine is a monster and clearly made in the high integrity style that is so rarely seen in these fruit-forward, almost "kool-aid-y", approachable Tempranillo-based wine days. And to imagine, at around $20-$25, that you could expect this wine not only to be so impressive at this stage but to have what it takes to improve considerably, over the next 3-7 years. Brilliant! (91+)

Exceptional bottle of wine. Deep dark purple, fantastic nose, great mouthfeel with well balanced fruits, heat, acidity and tannins. 11-18-09 Turns out this was the #2 WS Wine for the Year for 2009 - who would have known? WS gave this 96 points!

This seems to impress me more every time I taste it. Similar to my notes in 2008, this has delicious black berry, cherry, and plum fruit, with lots of power and framed well by its tannic structure. (Apart from noting the structure provided, the tannins seem less obtrusive than previous bottles.) The nose features a distinct note of anise spices, maybe some cedar. Good stuff from start to finish, and still shows promise for further development, so I'm upping my score (again), which makes this a great value. 92+

PnP. Seems to have both increased its fruit intensity and mellowed the tannins since last spring. Still is highly structured, but this was a pleasure to have with dinner. Lots of interesting 'notes' on the nose and on the palate that add to the fun. Pretty sure this will continute to evolve a bit more. 89+

Young & very tannic . . . yet very enjoyable. The tannins predominated with a strong grip on the palate. Strong nose of garrigan, some spice & earth, with underluying red & dark fruits. Good structure, full bodied with good acids that were well balanced. Flavors of dark (black) fruits, mushroom, bark, and earth balanced very nicely. Long finish w/ good mouthfeel and wieight. Would go well with grilled meats, baked fowl, pastas & pizzas, and stewed meats. I'd expect it to show even more character with time. Will definately get me a couple of more bottles to enjoy later. Expected score at full maturation 92-93.

How could I top DBP? Won't try. I'll just agree with everything but the burnt match and say I didn't notice the green apple. I also think 6 months in the bottle has better integrated the oak (save the almost overbearing vanilla). But this is beautiful stuff. Intellectually compelling and -- not always the dance partner -- sexy and lovable.

Notes pretty much as before, flavor profile, body, tannins, etc., but I was a little more wowed this time. Very big, but not overdone, dense and complex wine. This is a remarkable wine for the price, and definitely suggests improvement with time. 91-93

Drank between 3-5 hours of decanting. Deep deep red, almost purple color. Quite lovely. This wine smells exactly like taking a Nilla Wafer out of a cedar drawer, spreading it with butter, and then dipping it into blackberry jam and eating it. After I pull the glass away I'm left with a pleasing aroma of burnt match. A nice nose, but perhaps showing a tad too much oak. Every once in a while when I pull the glass away I also get a green apple component. At first I thought I was crazy, but it keeps happening so I'm sticking to it. Very chewy in the mouth, showing blueberry. The finish is actually very smooth and soft, but then begins to build towards blackberry pie with a rich butter crust, then winds up with some dark fruit twizlers, and a big dryness takes a few seconds to develop. Definitely a surprisingly straight forward finish. The tannins here are fairly big, but not like the 2004 of this same wine. At this stage this one's probably more open for business, but the '04 is a much better wine. I'd still wait 2-4 years to really enjoy this one.

What a solid wine. Certainly on the young side, but also drinking very well now. Great nose, nice fruit, and tannins are in check. First glass was a little tart, but that subsided by the second glass. I'm not one to decant. I would much rather see how the wine evolves. There is a nice balance here that will only improve with time. This is number 2 of 12. I'll wait 6 months, or at least try, until I have another.

Lots of plum and berry compote, with cedar and a little allspice on the nose. Pretty lush in the mouth, even though there are pretty substantial tannins; blueberry syrup and blackberry stand out. Powdery tannins can't hold back a lovely finish, with more brown spices and a little cocoa. 90-91

nose: nice dark berry nose with smoke, vanilla, some oak, coffee, and bits of mint. very filling and dark nose
taste: big dark tones on the palate of smoke, blackberry, dark raspberry, coffe(lots of coffee), with some oak influence in there too
overall: a excellent wine for a good price. Fills out the palate well with nice dark tones. the oak is a bit more there then I'd like, but, it's not like the oak is raging all over the place on this and is more there as a compliment rather then a main flavor. Very good attack and transition with a nice coffee finish

Blackberry, coffee, smoke, vanilla, dusty tannins. A little bitter and oaky with medium extraction, in my opinion. I've had all these really luscious Tempranillo Riojas, and this almost seems like it isn't the same grape. Not bad tasting; just not as rich as I would think. I'm willing to be corrected, but I just don't get a 90 point wine out of this.

Enjoyed this immensely. Based on some other reviews I was expecting an 88 point wine, but I was pleasantly suprised at the structure and suppleness of this wine. It is very different than th 2004 (which I prefered), but I think this has its' own merits and style to stand on

Day 1: Deep and fairly dark ruby. Got a huge burst of meat aromas right out of the bottle, along with dark berries and earth, but this blows off rather quickly. Aromas seem to mellow considerably with aeration (perhaps could even say they shut down?), with coffee smoke and a bit of toasty oak coming to the fore. Flavors offer lots of rich blackberry, dark cherry and plum, along with bittersweet chocolate and hints of leather and spice. Tannins are ripe and chewy, with good grip. Pick up more red fruit along with the chocolate on the medium length, slightly drying, finish. Excellent acidity gives this wine very good lift. Modern in style. Quite tasty with good structure. Not much complexity right now, and no real sense of terroir. Day 2: Wow. This really went downhill. Lost a lot of fruit. Very closed aromatically. Mostly heat, spice and leather on the palate. Mouthfeel seems rougher, and tannins feel harsher. Not sure what happened. Perhaps it just shut down. Perhaps a bad vacuum seal. 90+ day 1. 86 day 2.

Very pleasurable nose at first, featuring aromas of dark fruits, mostly blueberries, smoke, toast, graphite, and game. This wine did, however, close up aromatically as it sat in the glass. Very big and full in the mouth, showcasing predominantly fruit flavors of blueberries and rasberries complicated by notes of smoked meats. The finish packs a wallop! It is certainly young, but quite impressive for the value. Compared to the '05 Artadi Vinas de Gain, this wine is more rich in darker, blueberry fruit, and more in the new world style. Just as good, but different. This will probably last, and improve over the following few years. 90+

Nice purple/violet olor. Oak and vanilla (a sign of more oak) on the nose. Black cherrt and hint of cedar; some blueberry too. In the mouth, more oak and black cherry. A hint of cassis liquer. A bit hot; comes in at 14.5% but seems a bt higher. The tannins leave the mouth a bit dry on the finish. I think this has the potential to age. Opened it up too young. The 90 is based upon the potential of this wine; not based upon current drinking.

Tried this at a retailer tasting - the bottle had been open for a couple of hours. Inky purple with lots of dark fruits and berries over vanilla and some spice, but this feels very big, dense and over-extracted in the mouth to me with a fair bit of tannin as well.

Decanted 5 hours. Deep, dark purple to the rim. Nose is blueberry, blackberry, black raspberry and oak. Palate is blueberry cream, cassis, vanilla and black cherry. Gripping tannins in the mid-palate despite the long decant. Finish is at least 45 seconds. Needs time to develop but a very nice wine that drinks WAY above its price point.

NOSE: very rich; oak; spicy meat (pepperoni); smoky dark fruit (black cherry & blackberry); fragrance of violets in the background;
BODY: clear; very dark - a bit purple; medium bodied
TASTE: Tastes lighter than it smells; starts smoothly and finishes a bit on the tannic side. Spicy, kind of Paso-esque (dusty dark fruit, a little sweet). At $23, ridiculous QPR!

Intense purple all the way to the rim. Deceptive nose headlined by raspberries and strawberry jam. Palate is dominated by a rush of black fruit and spice and an awful lot of tannin. Tannic. A plethora of fat, dusty, yet not harsh/sharp tannins. There seems to be enough balance with the fruit and acid to assume this wine will age quite well. Long, lingering, polished finish. My first Termes experience, but definitely not my last. Awesome QPR.

Full purple fruit with a sweet vanilla coating and lots of dark tobacco. Not as big or sweet as the 2004, but pretty big and sweet nonetheless. Has some tacky lingering tannins and a long sticky finish. Very focused core. A lot of wine for the price, and to my palate not out of balance. An excellent buy. B

Brilliant!

This bottle had lots of "snickers bar" chocolate flavors much like a R. Foley wine. Not that there is anything wrong with this but just a note.

Deep, dark fruit. Opened up nicely over the 2.5 hours we drank. A bit lacking in complexity.

Full bodied, sweet, and smooth. Really big, but has the depth and structure to stay in balance. Still, not for the faint of heart. A lot of wine for the price.
B/B-

decanted for 4+ hours - still very tight... not much on the nose. wine tastes very balanced and complex - not fruit forward at all. i appreciated it more than i enjoyed it. will try again in a few years

Good qpr. Extracted wine with rasberry and plummy notes. A tartness that indicates some good underlying acidity. Nice wine, not much in complexity though.

I don't understand the reviews here, this is an INCREDIBLE value, could use a few years but the potential is almost as good as the '04; BUY!!

Medium to dark purple, understated nose, whiffs of gummy red fruit and alcohol encapsulated in vanilla, turns suave to tannic on the attack, mid-palate is bitter and charred, very drying on the finish, fairly simple for this price point

More oak and tannin than fruit. I'm hoping that some age will help this come together.

This needs some time to open up, but once it does it is obvious why Numanthia has become such a sought after producer.

100% Tempranillo from Toro, Spain
NOSE: very rich; oak; spicy meat (pepperoni); smoky dark fruit (black cherry & blackberry); fragrance of violets in the background;

Popped and poured.
