Sunday, December 17, 2023 - In a beautiful place right now and a blockbuster wine from the 2009 vintage. The sharp angles that once defined this pinot noir-driven cuvée have mellowed out to a style that one could call sheer drinking bliss.

After 30 minutes of air, the original stone fruit and yeasty aromas transform into heady, almost tropical notes framed by a palate-coating minerality.

The Vintage Brut from Champagne Louis Roederer is a 70/30 blend of estate-sourced pinot noir (historical vineyards in Verzy) and chardonnay (Chouilly). A small portion of the wine sees time in oak foudres, and the 2009 is the last non-malo vintage for this cuvée. With the 2012 vintage—released in 2018—Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon started to develop more malo to soften the texture, as Verzy is cool-climate pinot territory and the wines can be very tight.

Limited availability with roughly 200 cases originally imported to the US.

BYO at Great China in Berkeley, CA.
