In a beautiful place right now and a blockbuster wine from the 2009 vintage. The sharp angles that once defined this pinot noir-driven cuvée have mellowed out to a style that one could call sheer drinking bliss.
After 30 minutes of air, the original stone fruit and yeasty aromas transform into heady, almost tropical notes framed by a palate-coating minerality.
The Vintage Brut from Champagne Louis Roederer is a 70/30 blend of estate-sourced pinot noir (historical vineyards in Verzy) and chardonnay (Chouilly). A small portion of the wine sees time in oak foudres, and the 2009 is the last non-malo vintage for this cuvée. With the 2012 vintage—released in 2018—Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon started to develop more malo to soften the texture, as Verzy is cool-climate pinot territory and the wines can be very tight.

Not bad, if a little generic. No acid-monster. Some initial reduction that blew off. Hazelnuts, cane sugar and apples but all in good shape and nothing over the top. There is a vinous character to it that I enjoy.

Good ripeness on the nose with some fishy hints and lightly oxidised. Creamy mouthfeel, toasty autolysis, the bruised fruit and peppery or liquorice like finish. Good length at the end. Has some warmth earthy or nutty to it. Highly drinkable now.

Autolysis and tofu notes on the nose. Ripe fruited, an attractive sweet white nectarine on entry, fine mousse, stony and persistent on the midpalate, fine lime acidity.

A private dinner with friends (Amsterdam): Disgorged 2017. In the classic Roederer mould, the spicy richness and red apple fruit from the 70% Pinot Noir dominates the flavour profile, but there is lovely steely freshness (no malolactic) and minerality too, even in this sunny vintage. At peak.

Very nice! Fruity mature tones on the nose, hint of nuts. Complex and mature taste. Red apples, toast, honey, finishing off with a long nice grapefruit, burnt caramel and lemonade. Code on the bottle let me know it’s bottled 2010 and disgorged 2016.

I bought this on the strength of tasting it a few years back. At that tasting it was rich, complex and great value for money. This bottle however was a different wine. Tart, uni-dimensional and worse than a $20 bottle of ordinary bubbly. Stored perfectly in my cellar, I can only think it was subject to bottle variation or poor corking. Really disappointing. Would be interesting to hear if this is a common problem with Roederer wines.

Quite pale, light lemon in colour, with fine bubbles. Hints of almond on the nose. Delicate on the front of the palate, the expands through the mid palate with grapefruit and a rich acidity, then moves through to burnt caramel on the end of the palate. Great complexity, a lot going on with this wine, which is beautifully elegant and has great finesse.

This is still the same wine as last year. I like to have it around for my in-laws who don't love many of my lower dosage extra brut and like the Roederer brand. I still think it is very good, if a bit boring but is much easier without food than many of my go to grower stuff.

Inaugural mensual 17th dinner (Nico Osteria) (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. I thought this showed a nice mixture of pinot and chardonnay; it had a little bit of that crisp acidity of chardonnay, but also a little bit of that pinot earthiness. It's not the most complex champagne, but there's a good balance of acidity and richness here. Very drinkable, but clearly a step down from the first wine (which turns out was the Cristal). I did like this more than the Starck because this just had some more width on the palate.

Elegant and easy to drink, with a little toastiness just starting to develop. This is classic Pinot-driven Louis Roederer (70% PN / 30% CH), the Pinot sourced in the House's Verzy and Verzenay vineyards. 30% of the wine is matured in oak tuns. Well-balanced in terms of fruit and acidity, with notes of apple compote and hints of caramel. A great wine from a fantastic vintage. Perfect to enjoy on its own, even better when paired with a meal.

Really opened up over the course of a couple hours. Somewhat muted nose, slightly toasty with stewed apples. Had a lovely mouthfeel, elegant and soft, with beautiful acidic lift. I served it chilled, but preferred it after it had time to open up and warm up a bit. Excellent celebration wine.

Blackheath, London. This is a lovely Champagne again showing the purity and density of the best 2009s with a fine bead and pale straw colour and a nose of strawberry, redcurrant, pear and citrus with touches of brioche, apple cake and nougat. The palate has a cool density about it with plenty of grip and character with no suggestion of softness or overripeness. This is another lovely 2009 Champagne.

Well made, well mannered and delicious in its idiom. Maybe a touch boring, but a crowd pleaser and easy to drink. Good fruit, fine mousse, some toasty and nut notes to sit over it all. May also age decently. This may have a place in our cellar as it is Vilmart like without being as hard to get and significantly cheaper and a change of pace from the Extra Brut wines that we mostly have.

Light golden color with good persistent bead. Nose yeasty at first, golden apple, hint of toast. Palate brioche. Slightly nutty. Golden apple, good richness, nice finish. Overall very well-done, not the most profound especially at this young juncture but well-balanced and well-crafted, very enjoyable with refined French cuisine. 93 pts

Q3 - 2018 Tasting - Whites - “ABC” Anything but Chardonnay (New York, NY): 10/18 white wines tasted double blind. A surprise to me as I was not expecting any sparkling wine in the line up. Anything But (still) Chardonnay - ABC wines | Q3 Wine Club (The Apt): Wine #10: A majority pinot noir blend. In the standard cuvees I find I'm always drawn to this one. It's a hint sharp, bu there's a nice spice note to it and then a bit herbal as well. Good acidity. Started off a bit fizzy since we were using a pourer, but that calmed down. (3 pennies)

Color and bubbles: nothing to remark. Acid high. Some apples but this seems a little young. Like the discreet chestnut. Mousse not as impressive as the C Heidsieck NV or the blanc Millénaires 04. Not really that impressed but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and let the other bottle mature for another five years.

A lovely effort, the 2009 Brut Premier exhibits classy rich fresh apples, stony minerals, the classical brioche and last but not least a whiff of freshly caught oysters. The palate adds to the first impressions with a vivid yet elegant mousse, balanced and a beautifful acidity. This certainly is a very nice vintage of the Brut Premier which will continue to develop for another couple of years. With a length on the finish lasting some 40-45 seconds, this is an effort well worth trying if given the chance. Lovely!

(Disgorged in spring of 2017, dosage 9 gr/l, 66% Pinot noir and 34% Chardonnay) Light yellow colour with a greenish hue and lots of wonderful bubbles that explode into notes of baked bread, minerals and butterscotch at first, then showing butter popcorn, orchid flowers and lime. This is so lovely showing layer after layer of different notes on the still very youthful nose. Palate is very accessible with a smooth lime acidity and with a lovely butterscotch note as well. The lengthy licorice and lemon acidic finish shows the wonderful potential of this cuvée. This is already drinking very nicely in a more elegant and accessible style compared to the 2008 vintage. This should evolve into a more mature style over the coming decade and will probably be very lovely for all its lifespan with layers of complexity.. Best 2017-2029.

A really nice effort, the 2009 Roederer Vintage Brut is delivering its very best tonight. The nose offers up green apple, lemon zest, deep minerals and the classical sweet brioche. The palate has a very nice balance and integration, with one or two hard edges. The mousse is fine tuned but still vibrant and with one or two edges. A very nice acquaintance which most likely will continue to develop for many more years, but why wait?

Litigators' Wine Dinner (Tung Lok Signatures, Orchard Parade Hotel): A very pleasant drink indeed. The nose had a nice, round ripeness to it, with wafts of yellow plums and stone fruit, flowers and just a touch of minerality. Very attractive. It was very youthful on the palate, but already drinking beautifully. Really vibrant and energetic, with bright lemony acidity and a fine, effervescent mousse dancing around a a core of pure, apple and sweet berry flavours. Finish was a tad on the shorter side, but had a nice fruity crunch. Very gentle for a Pinot rich (70%) champagne, and eminently quaffable.

Again, surprisingly good showing from this Champagne in a vintage I’m not particular impressed with or found off. However, this Champagne impressed me back in December 2016 when I first tasted it, and still does. Has improved since back then, and the nose sports ripe citrus fruits with apples and smoky minerals too. Spicy palate, with baked apples and ripe citrus fruits, combined with a nice creaminess and also a pronounced minerallity. No signs of any over ripeness, but a balanced an fine Champagne. Simply very good and enjoyable bubble juice. (91 – 92)

From memory. @Jules Verne, Paris. Thought the wine opened up nicely over the course of 60+ minutes we enjoyed it. Citrus, apples and touch of honey and dough. Rich but not too fruit forward, and well (guessing low) dosaged. Backboned for the longer haul, but I am not a scholar in Roederer's so not sure how well it will age. Given the price point (in Norway, approx EUR 70) it is not a stand out buy, more a safe buy.

Extravagant nose, with ripe yellow-citrus and red-apple fruit, autolytic and nougat aromas. The generous flavours are offset by bright, linear acidity and fine, creamy mousse. Shows all it has at once, and finishes a bit shorter than expected. Nonetheless an outstanding '09.

Louis Roederer Masterclass (Afros & Fisalides Wine Fair, Grande Bretagne Hotel): 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 18% of the wine was fermented in oak barrels, no malolactic, sure lies for 48 months and 6 more months extra maturation after the disgorgement, 8 of the 10 best crus of Roederer in here, dosage 9gr/lt Quite different altogether, the fruit is riper showing some red fruit too, brioche, nuts, dried leaves, decadent. In the palate its quite explosive from the start but it gets more balanced after a while white and red fruit, nice creamy texture, rich body and mouthfeel, high intensity, more extrovert with long finish. Simply outstanding 93+

Nose is complex, a bit warm and with some grass tones, bread, yeast, minerals and red apples. Palate is also good, shows lime & lemon zest, creamy, with apples and minerals. Surprisingly good showing for a 2009, not too much, but rather elegant, with room for improvement. Perhaps and likely the best 09 Champagne I have had, up until now anyway? (And I did try at least 10 glasses from 10 different bottles) Enjoyed this allot tonight. (90 – 92+)

(Disgorged in spring of 2016) Light yellow colour. Nose is youthful and dominated by minerals and red berries in the beginning. After a while it opens up with more nuance and shows hazelnuts and some oak. Palate is not as intensely acidic as the 2008, but still shows nice potential with a nice and fresh lemon finish. This is a pretty decent cuvée that should evolve nicely over the next 10-15 years.

N: CLOSED; Some yeastiness?
P: Med body; Rndish entry with NICE frt juxtaposed by CRISP acidity which slowly resolves, yet still makes itself felt, through the LONG, balanced finish. ™I've been intentionally conservative as I've NO idea how such a wine ages.

SIA Wine Week - Finale (Singapore Airlines): ripe with apples and peach, whilst having the briny minerals and bready characters from autolysis; good balance among the somewhat complex blend of flavours

Nothing spectacular here. It's an "ok" Champagne but that's all. A little too pricey in my opinion.

Champagnedagen 2017 (Grand Hotel): Wonderful nose showing toasted bread, lemon, minerals and a hint of licorice in a youthful way. Refined palate showing soft acidity and with a very long and lengthy lemon peel finish. This is a very elegant cuvée with layers of complexity. Best 2019-2029.

Louis Roederer Masterclass (Afros & Fisalides Wine Fair, Grande Bretagne Hotel): 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 18% of the wine was fermented in oak barrels, no malolactic, sure lies for 48 months and 6 more months extra maturation after the disgorgement, 8 of the 10 best crus of Roederer in here, dosage 9gr/lt
Quite different altogether, the fruit is riper showing some red fruit too, brioche, nuts, dried leaves, decadent.

(And I did try at least 10 glasses from 10 different bottles)
Enjoyed this allot tonight.
